Ypsilanti Community Schools to offer employees reduced benefits

Because Ypsilanti Community Schools made preserving current employee salaries a priority for when the new district launches in July, the joint Ypsilanti-Willow Run Board of Education approved slightly reduced insurance coverage Thursday night, according to a report in the Ypsilanti Courier.

Ann Arbor principals union: Next superintendent needs local ties, not Ph.D.

The Ann Arbor Administrators Association issued 17 recommendations for what the Board of Education should look for in a new superintendent. The principals union took a couple of jabs at current Superintendent Patricia Green, pictured above, in its recommendations.

Ann Arbor Symphony tickets on sale for next season

Arie Lipsky will return to lead the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra for its 85th season.

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra has announced its full schedule for the 2013-14 season, including its regular subscription series as well as a variety of special events.

Tickets are on sale for the subscription season, which opens with a performance of Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring."

'He was Depot Town': Ypsilanti resident Tom Dodd remembered as community leader

Ypsilanti resident Tom Dodd played an intricate part in restoring the historic Depot Town and did countless things within the community to propel it forward, but it was his magnetic personality that many will remember.

Dodd died from a heart attack Sunday at the age of 78.

A 16-year-old Pioneer High School student admitted in court Monday that he was responsible for spray-painting his moniker "Mole" at 11 sites throughout Ann Arbor.

Ypsilanti's Bike-Bus-Walk Week to encourage alternative transportation

Ypsilanti resident Bob Krzewinski was riding his bicycle on Forest Avenue in 2006, when he was struck from behind by a hit-and-run motorist who briefly slowed down and then quickly left the scene.

"I was out of work for five months," said Krzewinksi, who also is a member of Ypsilanti's Non-Motorized Advisory Committee. "I was going east on Forest about a block from where I live and I was following all traffic regulations, when a car hit me and gave me some blunt force trauma to my arm. I only had 5 percent usage of my arm for some time. ... Thank God for physical therapists."

The votes are in: Grand Rapids voted Beer City USA in a landslide

Garnering 27,000 of the approximately 50,000 online votes cast, Grand Rapids has been crowned Beer City USA for 2013, according to a post on AnnArbor.com's sister site, MLive. Ann Arbor claimed the 4th spot on the annual poll, behind Kalamazoo and Asheville, NC.

Beer fans in Grand Rapids organized a strong push to win this designator this year, with a Facebook page, beer coasters, even a YouTube video with a Beer City theme song by the Jukejoint Handmedowns:

Michigan softball team to host NCAA regional Friday-Sunday at Alumni Field

The Michigan softball team celebrates with the Big Ten trophy after the game against Northwestern on Sunday, May 5. The Wolverines will host the regional round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament Friday-Sunday.

The Michigan softball team didn't have the ideal end to its regular season over the weekend, falling 9-3 to Wisconsin in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Tournament despite being the tournament's top seed.

The Wolverines will have to quickly put that loss behind them as they will host the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Demolition time: Georgetown Mall redevelopment set to begin

Construction equipment in the parking lot of the vacant Georgetown Mall. Demolition is scheduled to begin this week.

Permits have been approved and construction equipment has arrived for the tearing down of the former Georgetown Mall on Packard Road in Ann Arbor.

The demolition, more than three years in the making, will proceed with the help of a $1 million grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
