How do you reach out to an ex-friend after a life tragedy?

Hi, Carolyn:
I had a good friend in college, "Lucy"; we were inseparable, in each other's weddings, etc. Over the past two years we've had somewhat of a falling out, and I've kept my distance from her for a number of reasons.
Well, I just found out Lucy's mother killed Lucy's father and then tried to kill herself, and is now facing murder charges. How do I even respond?
I knew her parents fairly well but I haven't spoken to her in months, and the last time we spoke it was cold and unfriendly. Is there even a way to reach out?

Bridge column, May 16: The minimum count for using stayman
Normally, responder will have at least enough points to invite game. So, opposite a one-no-trump opening that shows 15-17 points, responder will have nine high-card points (or eight with a five-card suit in a minor).
However, assuming that you employ transfers into the majors, it is possible to use Stayman with zero points -- what is called garbage Stayman. You may have 4-4-5-0 distribution, when you plan to pass whatever opener rebids. Or you have (in principle) at least 5-5 in the majors. If opener rebids two of a major, you pass, knowing it is a nine-card fit. Or, if opener rebids two diamonds, you continue with two hearts. Then, opener passes with three hearts (as in this deal), or corrects to two spades with three spades and two hearts.

Woman needs courage to end man's plan for future together
DEAR ABBY:
I am a divorcee with college-aged children. I love my children, and I thought I loved my ex. However, after my divorce I wonder if I'm capable of loving anyone other than my children again.
Two years after the divorce I started a relationship with a man who is 10 years older. He had recently ended a long-term dating/living together relationship. I wasn't particularly drawn to him, but he was very persistent. We finally, jokingly, agreed to be "exclusively casual" and began dating. My children don't dislike him; they are indifferent to him.

Quick! Move fast! This warm weather is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing for obvious reasons, wearing shorts without getting goose pimples is one. It’s a curse because our wonderful spring ephemerals display their beauty for a much shorter period of time. Given that, I have a suggestion for you that you should follow if at all possible, especially if you live in Ann Arbor, and it’s this. Visit the Washtenaw County Farm’s Britton Woods in the next few days.

State commission rules DTE Energy can charge opt out fees to customers in smart meter program
The Michigan Public Service Commission has ruled that DTE Energy can charge its customers who opt out of its smart meter program, according to media reports.

Tecumseh Products agrees to pay $7M in price-fixing settlement
Pittsfield Township-based Tecumseh Products Co., along with units of Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corp., as well as a division of a Danish parts-supplier, agreed Wednesday to a settlement in a price-fixing lawsuit. The settlement will cost Tecumseh approximately $7 million, according to a report in Crain’s Detroit Business.

Australian documentarian Brendan Edgerton is traveling the world in hopes of seeing every Tucker automobile on the planet. On Tuesday, that quest led him to Ypsilanti, which was home to Preston Tucker, inventor of the ill-fated automobile that bore his name.

Take one former "Mad Men"-era gentlemen's club, add one inspired chef, mix well with a town hungry for creative cooking, and you might find yourself at the Righteous Rojo pop-up dinner at the Ann Arbor Club on Saturday evening.Righteous Rojo is the brainchild of full-time graphic designer and part-time chef Brad Greenhill. Greenhill began his culinary career at D'Amatos in Ann Arbor and went on to work at other Myles Anton restaurants before heading to Boston's North End to head up his own kitchen team.
After forging a path in the food world, Greenhill switched gears and made his way back to southeast Michigan.
