Boyfriend feels his career choice is being disrespected
Dear Carolyn:
I've been thinking of asking my girlfriend to marry me, after several years of happy and fulfilled dating.
The other day, for the first time, my girlfriend expressed that she really didn't like that I work at home. I freelance and really love it. I have a lot saved and I'm in a much better financial place than she is, which gives me a lot of latitude.
She said she couldn't understand the perspective of someone who didn't go in to an office every day and who didn't have to bear the burden of working under a boss. She made it clear that she wouldn't care if I made less money, only that I had somewhere to go in the morning and that I wasn't my own boss. She then compared me to her former boyfriends, who apparently had more "grit" and who had to work for a paycheck.

Bridge column, May 22: When opener likes responder's major
There are a lot of things to weigh up when a bridge transfer bid happens, too, and fit for partner's major is a big factor.

Gender reassignment involves more than a lifestyle change
DEAR ABBY:
My husband and I recently learned that our sister-in-law's adult son from a prior marriage, "Charlie," is now "Claire." My husband and I have three sons, ages 2 to 10 years.
This sister-in-law expressed concern that our 10-year-old would remember Charlie and say something inappropriate. She's demanding that we lie to him and tell him Claire is another daughter we have never met.
My husband and I do not lie to our children. We feel it is best to explain to all three of our sons that Charlie has decided to make a lifestyle change and let them ask questions if they choose. What is your opinion? -- TRUTH-TELLING PARENTS
