General Election results

Following what seemed like one of the longest campaign seasons ever, Democrat Barack Obama will be heading to the White House. In what several have termed a “gracious” concession speech at approximately 11:30 Tuesday evening, Republican John McCain offered his support to his president and asked others to do the same.

Results provided by the Tecumseh City Clerk’s office show that Obama also won Tecumseh, with 2,571 votes for him and Vice-Presidential candidate Joseph Biden, and 2,001 votes for McCain and his running mate, Sarah Palin. Obama also won Lenawee County with 24,638 votes vs. McCain/Palin’s 22,223 votes.

Schools plan ‘Instant Alert’ system

By DEB WUETHRICH

Parents and guardians of students in the Tecumseh Public Schools soon may be able to receive automatic alerts through a new program recently approved by the Tecumseh School Board. Honeywell Instant Alert™for Schools, a web based communication service designed to provide schools with a way to rapidly, effectively and accurately reach families of students in an emergency, is scheduled to be activated by December. The cost is based on the number of students enrolled, with an estimated $5,833 per year to be expended over the three-year contract.

Parents/guardians would provide E-mail, phone or text-message information to the district and receive an automatic alert for emergencies such as bomb threats, power failures, and snow days. They may also sign up to receive additional notices such as early dismissal announcements, late buses, parent teacher conference reminders, and other notifications.

City okays farming contract at Business Park site

By DEB WUETHRICH

The City of Tecumseh will continue to allow farming on the Tecumseh Business and Technology Campus site for another season even though development plans are still on schedule. A contract approved on Monday night with Doug Wilkins for $120 per acre, would be completed by August 16, 2009. Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch said the farmer plans to plant winter wheat yet this week.

“Our initial estimate is that the Campus construction work should be able to be completed before the winter of 2009, depending on how well we stage the work, weather conditions and other factors,” Welch pointed out in his report and at the meeting. “While there is no guarantee that we can complete the construction work in 2009, the Wilkins proposal allows us the most time.”

For Calloway Brooks, performing is a family tradition.

Tecumseh Center for the Arts will come alive with the fabulous sounds of the swing-big band era when the Cab Calloway Orchestra takes to the TCA stage on Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.

The whole audience bouncing and swaying to the irresistible rhythm….everybody singing HI-DE-HO!  They’re echoing the King himself, Cab Calloway.   He thrusts his baton into the air, and in his zoot suit, jumps, twirls and signals to the band to begin another chorus…. who could forget the incredible sounds and imagery of Cab Calloway and his hot Jazz  Orchestra from the swing era of music?

Today, under the baton of  Cab’s grandson, C. Calloway Brooks, The Cab Calloway Orchestra continues to delight audiences nationally, from the historic jazz club “Birdland” in New York City to venues all over the country.  They deliver an authentic sound of a hot jazz orchestra and present a snazzy stage style.

Prior to the Calloway Orchestra, a pre-show performance by the TCA Big Band, a 17-piece swing band will begin at 6:45 p.m.  Tickets  are $21 for adult,  $19 for senior/youth,  and are available at the TCA Box Office, by phone at 517-423-6617 or on line at www.thetca.org.
