To the Editor,
On Thursday, Jan. 27, 2008 I read with disbelief an article in the Tecumseh Herald sports section in which sports editor Mickey Alvarado described the interactions of the Adrian High School and Tecumseh High School cheering sections. The two cheering sections, known for their spirited support and witty banter, started with inappropriate chants, and were immediately reprimanded by each school’s administrators.
What I find offensive are the comments and insinuations of your sports editor, Mickey Alvarado. Mr. Alvarado stated in his opening paragraph “there is a line you don’t cross. Everyone, I thought, knew that.” Everyone that is except Mr. Alvarado! Further in the article he wrote as he stood in the Tecumseh section, “I thought for certain that every kid in the opposing stands was going to trample me on their way across the court so they could beat some sense into their hosts, but it didn’t happen. Instead of getting stabbed by the many minorities as I stood there dumbfounded with my Tecumseh Herald hat on and orange shirt to boot, the tension passed and Adrian’s players beat the Indian’s silly on the basketball court.”
The insinuation that Adrian’s ethnic students had malicious intent and possible weapons and his surprise at not being attacked goes well beyond anything the students might have said during the game. The insinuation was published in the Herald and to my knowledge no apology or reprimand of the reporter has taken place. I have great faith that the citizens of Tecumseh do not condone the insinuations or believe as Mr. Alvarado and the Herald do.
To the Editor,
The recent voter approval of the Non-Homestead Renewal for Tecumseh Public Schools is making it possible for our district to continue to offer the programs and services that the community has come to expect. Without this funding, we would have faced a severe budget shortfall. We greatly appreciate your support.
Because the burden of this renewal is placed on the businesses and owners of second homes, I urge you to shop locally first. Like the schools, local businesses will survive only with our patronage.
Please help our local economy grow by doing business locally.
Michael L. McAran, Superintendent
To the Editor,
My name is Tina Clark and I am the mother of Mary Clark, the six year old who was victim to a traumatic accidental scald burn on Dec. 16.
Since Mary’s accident, the community has shown such an incredible support for my daughter and our family. I would like to thank everyone for being so amazingly supportive and giving through this whole ordeal.
There are so many people that I would like to thank: the Palmyra Fire Dept., Shelly’s Seeds of Success Mary Kay Unit, Basil Boys, Carter Rehab, the staff at Sutton Schools and all the businesses and individuals that donated items, time, and money to Mary’s fundraiser and the gifts and donations made at TLC. To everyone who has graciously given out of their hearts to my daughter, most of you who I don’t even know the names of, thank you so much. A special thank you to Josh and Patty Lawrence, who have been so compassionate and gave so much time and energy to putting together a fundraiser for a girl they had never even met, you are truly special. And to Shelby, Mary’s sister, and all the paramedics from the Palmyra Fire Dept., Madison Fire Det., and St. V’s Children’s Hospital — I am truly indebted to you for saving my daughter’s life.
Mary’s burns are healing and she is coming along well. Unfortunately, she does have surgeries coming up to correct skin bands that have formed so that she can have full range of motion back in her upper body, but we are praying that everything will heal correctly. She will have a few more surgeries ahead of her before this is all over, but she has been a trooper through the whole thing.
Again, I just want to thank everyone for everything they have done to make this trauma less painful for her and our family. You are amazing and have blessed our family beyond what words can describe. We are touched from the bottom of our hearts.

Close to 350 people came out to enjoy a taste of local eateries at the 12th Annual Taste held in Tecumseh Saturday, Feb. 2, at Tecumseh High School. That, coupled with the many who attended the Savor the Experience wine tasting event hosted by United Bank and Trust, brought in just under $38,000 for CIS of Tecumseh.
CIS Director Susan Reeder said it was definitely a good year for the fundraising events. “In these economic times, to have people come out and support us like that I couldn’t be more thrilled,” she said.
This is the twelfth year for the CIS of Tecumseh fundraiser. Reeder said it started out as a small event held in the cafeteria of what now is Tecumseh Middle School. The first Taste event raised $5,000.
“Now with the it being in the high school, we’ve grown from those humble beginnings,” Reeder said. “What a great way to showcase the location and a great way to support CIS and the students in Tecumseh,” she said.
CIS of Tecumseh was incorporated in 1995 as a way to bring the business community and the schools together in an effort to help students succeed in school and learn about the opportunities available to them as they prepared to enter the work force. CIS is behind such programs as the Pen Pal program that links people in the business community with sixth graders at Tecumseh Middle School as pen pals during the school year.
