To the Editor,

I received the Notice of Assessment the other day and discovered that my property tax increased by 60 percent. I question if the assessor’s office has taken into account any of the following in determining the assessed value of my home:

Freddie Mac announced that its Conventional Mortgage Home Price Index (CMHPI) Classic Series : East North Central Division (IL, IN, MI, OH, WI): decreased 0.9 percent (-3.4 percent, annualized) in the third quarter of 2007.

The decline in the S&P/Case-Shiller® U.S. National Home Price Index — which covers all nine U.S. census divisions — neared double digits, posting -8.9 percent versus the 4th quarter of 2006, the largest decline in the series 20-year history. During the 1990-91 housing recession the annual rate bottomed at -2.8 percent. The 10-City Composite also set a new record, with an annual decline of 9.8 percent. In December, the 20-City Composite recorded an annual decline of 9.1 percent.

Michigan is in the 20-City Composite which shows that the Home Price Index has decreased by 9.1percent.

Did you know that the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight published a report noting the property values in Ann Arbor decreased 7.09 percent; Monroe 6.90 percent, and Flint 6.42 percent. I believe Detroit was rated at 11.1 percent.

In addition did they take into account that the Michigan State panel, in December of 2007, changed the rules to allow sales of foreclosed homes — usually at depressed prices — to be part of the mix in figuring assessments, a move that could help drive down property assessments in some communities as much as 8 percent.

The State Tax Commission also gave assessors authority to use sales studies based on just one year, not two years, of sales.

To the Editor,

We would like to thank everyone for their support, prayers, thoughts, concerns and well-wishes during Rick’s recent surgery and hospital stay.

We have several close friends and family members whose support has been immeasurable. The outpouring of concern from the greater community has been remarkable, as well, and has turned this difficult situation into a joyous and thankful time in our lives. We know we have been raised up by several prayer chains and church congregations. Offers from friends and acquaintances to help out with any little detail which might lighten our load have really been helpful and appreciated.

We have read the cards and felt the positive thoughts of everyone and count ourselves blessed to live among such wonderful, caring people. Due to all of this and the talent of the doctors and nurses at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Rick is on his way to a speedy and full recovery. Our family can only hope to repay your kindness.
Thank you!!

To the Editor,

On behalf of the City of Tecumseh, I would like to express our appreciation to the Tecumseh Area Chamber of Commerce, Vivian Yarger and Katlyn Yarger for their hard work at the recent Business Expo and Craft Show. The event was a success, bringing many people from outside the area to our community.

These visitors had the opportunity to shop and experience some of our great businesses. Our businesses hopefully were able to showcase their services and products to new customers.

Hopefully this will become an annual event that brings more people in to our great community.

To the Editor,

On behalf of the Tecumseh Key Club, I am writing to thank the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce, especially Vivian and Kaitlin Yarger, for their support of our club at the Craft and Business Expo on March 1 at the Tecumseh High School.

We had fun helping with set-up but also enjoyed selling donuts, coffee and hot chocolate. Thanks to them for offering this opportunity to our club and for their generous donation to help support the Key Club.

We would like to thank them for their support and for including us in this fun community event.  We look forward to future invitations to be of service to the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce.

To the Editor,

We are trying to trace descendants of James and Martha Hills, who lived in Tecumseh in 1907.We have two letters written by Martha Hills to her husband James when he was visting England at this time.

Perhaps great-grandchildren of the children of James and Martha might be interested in having these letters. They relate to the lives of farm labourers and the production of maple syrup. The Hills family were farmers in Kent, England, going back to 1600.
The children of James and Martha were: James, William, Leroy, Horace, Orson and Collier. Granddaughters were: Edna Lewis, age 10 in 1907, and Marie Farrington, age 3 in 1897.

If you could print this letter we would be very grateful,
