Optimism held for future of Macon’s Boysville campus

Although the campus of Boysville in Macon is missing the young men it has served for more than six decades, there is a quiet sense of optimism among the remaining staff. Holy Cross Children’s Services (HSCC) is still operational, and working to utilize the campus of Boysville in a new way, possibly by the fall.When the campus of Boysville opened in 1948, the mission of the Catholic-based organization was to assist Catholic boys struggling with family life to help them reintegrate successfully with their families and society.

Raisin Township may add special assessment taxes to fix roads

After hearing the presentation made by Scio Township Supervisor Spaulding Clark on Friday, June 27, the Raisin Township road committee reconvened Tuesday, July 1, to narrow down their road funding recommendations to the township board. “I like the special assessment. I like what Scio Township did, but it’s not even an apples to apples comparison between townships. Their township had a million dollars in their rainy day fund to help with this,” committee member Tom Mitchell said. “We don’t have anything near that.”“In any event, I still like the special assessment idea.

Carey, Baker to play in East-West All-Star game

This year’s 33rd annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association (MHSBCA) East-West All-Star Game will have two local players featured among the best in the state. Tecumseh senior pitcher/third baseman Phil Carey and Clinton senior pitcher/infielder TJ Baker will be members of the West team on Thursday, July 10, at Comerica Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers. The MHSBCA East-West All-Star Game features 36 of the state’s top seniors.

Parachutists set four skydiving records over Tecumseh

Records are meant to be broken and that’s exactly what a group of experienced local skydivers did over the summer solstice weekend.Four state skydiving records were set at Skydive Tecumseh during the weekend of June 21-22, with the first taking four attempts before completion.The Michigan skydivers first set a record in Tecumseh for the largest formation of skydivers over the age of 40. The group, known nationally as POPS (Parachutists Over Phorty), built a 29-person formation and held it for five seconds to set the new record. But the record didn’t come easy.

Local construction projects may point to better times ahead

There are a number of construction projects in various stages of completion around Tecumseh, reminders that the Michigan economy is slowly rebounding after Michigan was hit hard by the recession. Buttermilk condominiums is seeing an additional three buildings — or six units — built. Four have already been sold, according to Tecumseh Building Services Director and Building Inspector, Brad Raymond. Buttermilk condominiums is located at the corner of Brown Street and N. Occidental Hwy. O’Reilly Auto Parts purchased the property at 1202 W.

Clinton Community Schools’ board sets budget for 2014-15

The Clinton Community Schools Board of Education met on Monday, June 30, to discuss finances for the district during its budget hearing. The board discussed upcoming levies as well as the budget for the 2014-2015 school year.Supt. Sean McNatt reviewed the information for setting the millage levy, sinking fund levy and the debt retirement levy.

State Representative not doing enough to help county roads

To the Editor,The Republicans control all branches of government in Lansing, so if they wanted to fix and maintain our roads, they could have passed a roads plan. Instead, Republican leadership simply dropped the ball. They gave up trying to get their own party members to vote to spend money to fix and maintain our roads. What happened? Well, we have a great example with our own State Representative, Nancy Jenkins. She just doesn’t care about the needs of Lenawee County. Our roads are crumbling, and we’re spending taxpayer dollars to give her a nice salary doing… what again is she doing?

Derral Ray Prater

Derral Ray Prater, age 73 of Tecumseh died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 17, 1940 in Bonanza, Ky., to Sherman and Mollie (Sparks) Prater. On May 27, 1972 he married Judy Kotlarczyk at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Milan. Derral was a graduate of Prestonsburg High School in Prestonsburg, Ky., and Mayo State Vocational School in Paintsville, Ky. He retired from Ford Motor Company in Saline after 31 years on December 31, 1998. Derral proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of St.

Raisin Trustees meet to discuss roads with committee

On Friday, June 27, the Raisin Township Board of Trustees and road committee heard from Scio Township Supervisor Spaulding Clark about the special assessment his township approved as a way to finance road repairs and maintenance.Like Raisin Township, funding for roads originally came out of the general fund, leaving Scio Township without the proper funding. “We have to really relate this to what Raisin Township’s needs are,” said Interim Superintendent Jim Palmer.

Pig Jig returns to Sidewalk Sales

The Pig Jig was such a successful addition to last year’s Sidewalk Sales, the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce is bringing back the food and fun for a second year on Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19.“We have a great company coming in to roast the pork,” said Vicki Philo, executive director of the chamber. “We had a really good response from the community last year. People had a great time sitting outside.”The Pig Jig starts at 4 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday. The fun continues each day until the food runs out.Last year, according to Philo, about 200 people enjoyed the pork roast.

Community Arts of Tecumseh kicks off summer art camp

Art is on this week at Community Arts of Tecumseh (CAT) with the group’s summer art camp. Students gathered at the John W. Smith building on Tuesday afternoon, June 24, to tap into their inner artist. Andrea Miller, an art teacher for Adrian Public Schools, worked with students in grades seventh, eighth and ninth. Projects for the week include creating clay tiles using sgraffito method, soap bar sculpture and canvas painting.The students started working on the clay tiles by painting them on Monday, June 23.

Delmas D. Dotson

Delmas D. Dotson, age 71, of Tecumseh, passed away, Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the University of Michigan Hospital. Delmas was born July 12, 1942 in Ivyton, Ky., the son of Alfred and Cyna (Stanley) Dotson. He was a graduate of Tecumseh High School.Del married his soul mate, Linda Dotson, August 19, 1983. They have enjoyed 30 blissfull yeas of marriage. In 2002 he retired from Ford Motor Company after 39 years of service. Del loved the Lord with all his heart and lived every day striving to be like his savior Jesus Christ since becoming a Christian in 1971.

Joseph “Joe I” Hanna

Joseph “Joe I” Hanna passed away quietly at his home, Sunday, June 22, 2014. He is survived by his sister Melissa; four children, Jay (Jill) Hanna, Kari Hanna, Erica (Mike) Stevens and Jackie Hanna; two nieces; two great nephews; nine grandchildren and an endless amount of friends. Joe was born in Tecumseh and resided there his entire life. He will be greatly missed by all of those who love him. A memorial dinner was held to honor Joe’s life on Thursday, June 26, at The American Legion in Tecumseh.

Special Forces U15 lacrosse team first at regional championship

In just one season, a newly formed U15 Lacrosse traveling club team called Special Forces has made quite a name for itself by winning a US Lacrosse regional championship and qualifying for the upcoming national championships in Colorado.Special Forces advanced to the Regional Championship on Father’s Day, June 15, in Verona Wis., and faced the undefeated Coyotes of Dane County Wis.
