Harrison Porter Bailey

Harrison Porter Bailey, 87, of Alma, Ark., died Monday, August 27, 2012, in a local nursing home.He was born June 23, 1925, in Fairfield, Mich., the son of Harrison and Lulu (Palmer) Bailey. Harrison worked for Johnny Underwood as an auto mechanic, then went to work for Revlco where his brother Paul worked, before moving his family to Hudson in 1956 and went to farming full time. Harrison was a member of the Methodist Church in Ridgeway. He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy Jean Bailey.

Tecumseh beats Calvin Christian

Two wins in a row have Tecumseh’s varsity football team pumped up and ready to play its first home game of the season on Friday, Sept. 7 against Ann Arbor Huron.The Indians traveled to Grandville Calvin Christian on Thursday, Aug. 30, and defeated the Calvin Christian Squires 45-20 after a rough start.

Thanks family, friends who joined for golf benefit at Wolf Creek

To The Editor,I would like to thank everyone who participated in the 3rd Annual Hutch Memorial Golf Outing, in memory of Rich Hutchinson. I especially would like to thank my family members who helped put the outing together: The LaVoys and The Hutchinsons. I could not ask for better family/friends than these people!Thank you also goes to Wolf Creek Golf Course who had all of the golf carts set up, steaks ordered, enough beverages, etc… making everything run very smoothly.

Weather stress is showing with early fall tree color

In recent years, it hasn’t been uncommon to see fall tree color begin at the end of October, but this year tree color and leaf drop started in some trees during the last week of August. The change isn’t due to cooler temperatures, it’s happening for a less pleasant reason. “We are heading into that time of year where colors change,” said Steven Courtney, Manager of Hidden Lake Gardens “but my opinion is that the trees are stressed.”Courtney explained the trees are stressed from not only the severe summer drought, but also the extremely warm temperatures through most of the summer.

Benefit walk to raise funds for Alzheimer’s

ADRIAN — The Alzheimer’s Association is inviting Lenawee County residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Trestle Park in Adrian will be the site of the Walk on Sunday, Sept. 16. Registration opens at 12 p.m., and the Walk begins at 2 p.m. Walk to End Alzheimer’s is more than a walk.

Clinton dashes past Royals

Clinton High School’s varsity football team traveled to Blissfield on Thursday, Aug. 30, and returned home with a 39-14 victory over the Royals. The Redskins took an early lead that they never let go of before securing their second consecutive victory. TJ Baker opened up scoring with a 49-yard touchdown pass to Cullen Zimmerman in the opening quarter.Zimmerman hauled in two touchdown passes of 52- and 49-yards from Baker while Brett Tschirhart scored on a one-yard run. Colin Poore scored two TDs on runs of 2- and 15-yards, while Mathew Sexton hauled in a 50-yard touchdown pass from Baker.

Council approves resolutions for Tim Hortons site

Tecumseh City Council adopted two resolutions on Tuesday for the Tim Hortons Café and Bake Shop construction project at 901 W. Chicago Blvd. The building project is scheduled to begin this month with anticipated opening of the new business in Dec-ember.

BD falls 10-6 in game 2

Britton Deerfield’s varsity football team lost 10-6 at Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes on Saturday, Sept. 1.Junior Leighton Merritt rushed for 76 of the Patriots’ total 166-yards of offense. BD’s Nate Hoffman completed 5-of-21 passes for 53 yards. Two of his passes were intercepted.The Patriots are now 1-1 overall with the loss. BD plays at home against Clinton on Friday, Sept. 7, beginning at 7 p.m.

Patriots run at Dome Classic Invite

Britton Deerfield’s varsity cross country teams traveled to East Jackson for the Dome Classic Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 28.“There wasn’t a team score but we ran extremely well given that this will probably be on the toughest courses that we run on all year,” said Patriot boys and girls coach Jay Yockey. “There were a lot of hills and we treated this as a workout because we knew times wouldn't be spectacular today.

Tecumseh splits SEC tri-meet

Tecumseh High School varsity girls golf team split its Southeastern Conference tri-match at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti on Wednesday, Aug 31, beating Ann Arbor Skyline 216-254 but losing by one stroke to Ann Arbor Huron, 215-216. Becca Nowak led Tecumseh’s squad with a 42 while Leigh Kapnick followed with 52. Tecumseh’s Carley LaPlant carded 60: Anneka Hart, 62; and Keisha Batra, 68. Paige Watkins has been an early leader for the Indians, however she sat the match out due to a shoulder injury, according to coach Kerry Smith.

The checklist has more than 200 items and it covers everything from brakes to upholstery. Now, imagine if you had to pass that scrutiny 26 times. THS Class of 1972 varsity football team to be honored at first home game

The Tecumseh Indian’s No. 1 ranked Class B state football team of 1972 will be honored during halftime of Tecumseh High School’s first home varsity football game against Ann Arbor Huron on Friday, Sept. 7, with members, including the head coach Tom Fagan, attending. Bob Ondrovick, a first-year assistant coach on the 1972 team, helped organize the event in honor of the team’s 40th anniversary this year.“We’re going to have a hospitality, greeting tent before the game so you should be able to pop in there and see coach Fagan,” said Ondrovick.

Prehistoric Forest finds buyer after standing vacant for over a decade

Prehistoric Forest, a beloved icon on U.S. 12, sold last week to Sandra Crabb from California. The property sold in two parcels, which total 15.95 acres, for $399,000 in a cash sale.Realtor Mary Alice Kozemchak of Killarney Realty said the property has not been occupied since the 1990s. “It’s been for sale forever,” she said. Kozemchak put the property on the market about six months ago and was surprised at the interest shown by prospective buyers.

Gertrude Emily Kapnick

Gertrude Emily Kapnick, age 102, of Britton, passed away August 30, 2012.Gertrude was born May 28, 1910 in Deerfield Township, the daughter of Herman and Hattie (Prielipp) Piotter. On June 2, 1931, she married Robert C. Kapnick in the North Blissfield Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on July 2, 1981.Gertrude was a lifelong resident of the Britton and Deerfield area. Working along side her husband, Robert, they started Kapnick Orchards in 1958.Being a devout Lutheran her entire life, in her early years she was a member of the North Blissfield Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Tecumseh wins opener, beats Bears 49-14

It’s been a long time since Tecumseh’s varsity football team opened the season looking as good as it did when picking up a 49-14 win at Monroe Jefferson on Friday, Aug. 24.A long time indeed — The last time the Indians looked as strong in an opener was when recording a 20-8 win against Carlton Airport way back in 2001 when star athlete Cole Cory and head coach Randy Hutchison led the Tribe into postseason play and finished with a 6-4 overall record.“It feels good to win, especially the first one,” said Tecumseh head coach Al Romano.

Police arrest three area men as suspects in larceny cases

From TROY STERNTecumseh Police ChiefA joint investigation between the Tecumseh Police Department (TPD) and the Raisin Township Police Department (RTPD) has lead to the arrest of two adult males, one juvenile male, and the recovery of over 300 items of suspected stolen property. Most of the items are believed to have been taken in larcenies from motor vehicles throughout Lenawee, Monroe and Washtenaw Counties. On Aug. 24, Tecumseh Police Officers were dispatched to a residence in the City of Tecumseh to investigate an unrelated juvenile probation violation complaint.

Downtown is focal point for Art in August event

Art in August activities took place throughout the day on Friday, Aug. 24, in downtown Tecumseh as plein air artists took to the Boulevard and area parks. During the evening, art pieces were on display during a reception at the Black Door Gallery.
