Thanks supporters of scholarship benefit

To the Editor,What a wonderful community we live in! Carter Rehabilitation Center in Tecumseh held its 18th annual Kelly Carter Scholarship Run/Walk on Saturday, July 14. This was one of the most successful events ever with local and regional participants,I would like to thank the Tecumseh Police Department for traffic control and making sure all our runners were safe. Robert Allan Bancroft

Kathleen A. Hamilton

Kathleen A. Hamilton, age 55 of Clinton, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Bixby Medical Center, Adrian, with her family at her side. She was born on October 29, 1956 in Wyandotte, Mich., the daughter of Bernard F. Koester and Dollie (Howell) Koester. On June 17, 1974 she married Timothy Hamilton, who survives.Kathy was a homemaker who enjoyed, basket weaving and was past president of the Clinton High School Band Boosters. She also enjoyed arts, crafts, traveling and especially going on cruises with her husband, Tim.

James Merrill

James Merrill age 79, of Clinton, died unexpectedly Monday June 16, 2012. He was born May 10, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Gerald and Arlee (Wise) Merrill. In July 1966 he married Julia Wagner in Mt. Clemens and she preceded him in death on December 17, 1989.James loved collecting things, he was an avid collector of guns, knives, and cars; in his younger days he enjoyed built dragsters.

Marijuana worries neighbors in Tecumseh Township subdivision

Looking out from his second floor window into his neighbor’s yard, Tecumseh Township resident Tom Hodgman is able to count approximately 50 large marijuana plants growing openly outside, as a German Shepherd guard dog patrols the grounds.Hodgman’s neighbor’s property is surrounded by a wooden fence, approximately six foot tall, that conceals the large growing operation but Hodgman said he is still concerned for his family’s safety.

Bystander saves toddler found under water at Pit

Quick action by a stranger at Tecumseh Park, otherwise known as ‘The Pit,’ helped save the life of a one and a half year old boy on Tuesday afternoon, July 17.Lenawee County Ambulance, together with Tecumseh police and fire department members, responded to an emergency call at 5:50 p.m. for a possible drowning.Before they arrived, the infant had been pulled from the water by a bystander, who yelled for help. Police Chief Troy Stern said that the child was reported to be awake and breathing on his own as medical staff attended to him. As of 8:30 p.m.

Group prioritizes plan to address substance abuse

A newly formed group now known as the Tecumseh Coalition for Youth (TCY) held its second meeting on Friday, July 13, at Evans Street Station. A cross-section of the community is represented at the coalition, including city and school officials, law enforcement, youths and other segments.Mayor Richard Johnson chaired this month’s meeting, and April Demers, Coalition Development Coordinator for substance abuse prevention, has been facilitating the meetings.

Appreciation felt for support of ‘Trains Trucks and More!’

John Westcott Underwood

John Westcott Underwood, age 81, of Tecumseh, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at his home, under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. He was born December 20, 1930, in Tecumseh to George V. and Helen M. (Westcott) Underwood Sr. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951-1955. He was married to Gloria J. Noe, and she survives. John was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. He was the owner-president of Underwood Chevrolet-Buick in Clinton. In 2007, he was proudly honored to be recognized and given an award by the General Motors Corporation for 50 years as a Chevrolet dealer, 1957-2007.

Lawrence Young

Lawrence Young, age 78, of Tecumseh died Tuesday, July 10, 2012 in St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. He was born October 16, 1933 in Milan to Ralph and Mabel (Lawrence) Young. On June 12, 1954 in Adrian he married Barbara Meyer. Lawrence was a 1951 graduate of Tecumseh High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Lawrence was self-employed as a farmer and as an owner, driver, breeder and trainer in harness horse racing. He was the winner in over 640 races during his career.

Daniel E. Broughton

Daniel E. Broughton, age 27, of Tecumseh, formerly of Ypsilanti, passed away suddenly July 8, 2012 of unknown causes. He was born August 30, 1984 in Ann Arbor, Mich., the son of Larry Broughton of Wixom, and Dorothy (Vasher) Broughton of Tecumseh.Daniel attended Willow Run Schools in Ypsilanti, where he earned his G.E.D.He competed in Mr. Michigan All Natural Bodybuilding Contest, placing 2nd in the under-18 age group.Daniel had a passion for auto mechanics and was a certified brake specialist. He loved to ride motorcycles, play guitar, and sing.

Auto parts store being proposed with ‘pocket park’ screening

A proposed auto parts store, even if screened with a “pocket park” setting, is not a popular idea to neighbors in the Sunset Drive area. Several residents were present at a Planning Commission meeting on July 10, and some expressed concerns about a store being proposed on a triangle of property on W. Chicago Boulevard and Sunset. The Planning Commission held a public hearing to consider rezoning for 808 W. Chicago Blvd. and 807 Sunset St. A building on the property was once a church and most recently housed a real estate office.

TPS Board studies energy company proposals

Supt. Mike McAran reported to the Tecumseh School Board on negotiations for mineral rights under Sutton Elementary School on Monday, July 9. Two companies are now vying for options on the 10-acre property. Several weeks ago, McAran was contacted by Savoy Energy of Traverse City about leasing the property at a tentative figure of $250 per acre per year and 1/8 of the profit from each unit of energy tapped (barrels of oil or cubic feet of natural gas).

Tecumseh family finds Chinese students more alike than different on musical tour with U-M group

A Tecumseh family spent three weeks in May visiting China with a University of Michigan music group. Colleen Conway teaches at the University of Michigan School of Music and served as one of the faculty leaders for a group of Music Education students invited to China for a cultural exchange.“The University of Michigan is part of an organization called the Confucius Institute, and this trip was initiated and paid for by them,” said Colleen.

Planning Commission votes to pass Prohibited Use Ordinance to council

The Tecumseh Planning Commission voted unanimously on Tuesday, July 10, to recommend that Tecumseh City Council members review a Prohibited Use Ordinance in the city.The action, which took place following a public hearing, involves a proposed amendment to the city’s zoning ordinance that would address prohibited uses of land in the community, addressing any land use that is in violation with local, state or federal law. Discussion included the ordinance’s potential impact on growing and dispensing medical marijuana.

TPS board tightens timeline to replace McAran

The timeline and procedure for finding a replacement for retiring Superintendent of Schools Mike McAran occupied much of the discussion at Monday night’s regular meeting of the Tecumseh School Board.Board President Ed Tritt said that the position will be posted by August 1 and added that the general outline for some of the interview strategies remain from the last superintendent search that procured Todd Bingaman, McAran’s predecessor, who died part way into his contract. Tritt was on the board when that search was conducted.
