New CISTA program helps students with homework

By DEANE ERTSIf you are a Tecumseh Middle School (TMS) student who is having difficulty with a class assignment or subject, you now are able to get some free tutoring, thanks to a program instituted by Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA).The after-school homework help program is under the direction of CISTA site coordinator Cindy Hook and is held in the TMS media center beginning immediately after the last bell at 2:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation to host third annual Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge

By DEB WUETHRICHTecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch reported to council members Monday night that the Tecumseh Parks and Recreation Department will host the 3rd Annual Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge this winter. Welch invited city council members, along with the public, to participate in the challenge.Mayor Richard Johnson and his wife, Susan, will be participating in the 12-week program this year.The Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge will begin on Sunday, Jan. 29 with a kick-off event at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts.

Tecumseh bowlers get rolling

By MICKEY ALVARADOHaving three state championship banners hanging on their home alley gives Tecumseh’s varsity girls bowling team members something to aspire to as they began once again to compete in another season.Haley and Jordan Richard return to the squad for their second season knowing exactly what it takes to reach the top. They’d watched Tawni Vollmer and then their sister, Kara, pick up individual state titles while helping the Indians to three consecutive state championships.

Clark breaks scoring record in Clinton opener

Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team defeated Manchester 92-81 on Monday, Dec. 5. Manchester’s high-risk/high-reward system yielded advantages for the Redskins just about every time down the floor, according to coach Mike Ruhl. Clinton was able to break traps and cash in on many of those opportunities, shooting 35-59 from the floor.Grant Clark cashed in on numerous opportunities (26/35 shooting, 7/14 from free throw line), shattering Clinton’s single-game scoring record of 44 points, set by Chad Dunigan during the 1999-2000 season, by scoring 59 points.

DARWIN E. “DUTCH” CREGER

Darwin E. “Dutch” Creger, age 83, passed away at Herrick Medical Center in Tecumseh December 6, 2011. He was born January 10, 1928, in Tecumseh, the son of Harry and Bertha (Whaley) Creger. He married Mary Helen Flory on September 11, 1948, and she survives.Dutch was a lifetime resident of Tecumseh. One of his proudest moments was being the first graduate of the Class of 2002 to receive his high school diploma at the newly c o n s t r u c t e d Tecumseh High School. Dutch was a veteran of the U.S.

Comstock handed loss in first game with Indians

ROBERT L. 'BUBBA' STERLING, JR

Robert L. "Bubba" Sterling, Jr., age 53, of Tecumseh, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 28, 2011.Robert was born September 6, 1958 in Hamburg, Germany the first of three sons to Robert and Waltraud (Stolz) Sterling. Bob was a 1976 graduate of Tecumseh High School. Shortly after graduation, Bob entered the United States Army until discharged in 1988. Bob enjoyed learning and received a Business Administration degree while in the Army. His education continued throughout his life.

OLIVE MARJORIE (GILLIN) MACK

Olive Marjorie (Gillin) Mack, age 96, of Tecumseh, passed away Nov. 30, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Beckley, W.Va.Olive was born April 5, 1915 in Johnstown, Penn., the daughter of Merton and Jenny Lee (Sensabaugh) Gillin.On May 7, 1934, she married David Mack in Cumberland, Maryland and he preceded her in death August 10, 1998.Olive was a kind and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She loved gardening, bird watching, cooking, traveling and fishing.

Patriots fall to Bobcats

Britton Deerfield’s varsity boys basketball team fell behind early in its Friday, Dec. 16, Tri-County Conference contest at home against visiting Whiteford and never recovered, falling 55-44 against the Bobcats.The first quarter closed with the Bobcats carrying a seven point, 16-9, lead. The Patriots almost kept pace with the Bobcats in the second quarter with Jordan Osbun and Landon Handy hitting the boards to help BD score 14 points to Whiteford’s 16.The Patriots owned the third quarter, outscoring Whiteford 14-7 to go into the final quarter down by only one point at 38-37.

Clinton boys jump to 4-0

Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team improved to 4-0 overall after picking up its fourth straight win at Morenci on Friday, Dec. 16.

Pins, forefeits help Tecumseh tie dual points record

Eight pins and six forfeits helped Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team tie the state record for Dual Points with an 84-0 final against visiting Skyline on Wednesday, Dec. 14.Recording pins for the Indians were Charlie Haesler (152), Ryan Harrison (160), Devin Moore (189), Kolin Connors (215), Joey Rebottaro (285), Luke Liuzzi (119), Pete Rathsack (140) and Devin Moore (145).The Indians also defeated Ypsilanti 54-15 during the meet.Recording pins for the Indians were Jacob Hilton (112), Wyatt Cadmus (125), Austin Slick-Linn (130), Ayron Birchfield (135) and Devin Moore (189).

Tecumseh’s girls squeeze past Maples

Tecumseh’s varsity girls bowling team traveled to Adrian on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and returned with a 19-11 victory while the varsity boys lost 18-12.The girls split their baker games winning 208-143 but losing 179-186 for a 6-4 lead.Tecumseh had team games of 847 and 833 to Adrian's 731 and 839, taking seven individual points and six team points for totals.Atlanta Roberts rolled a game-high 191 to lead Tecumseh.The varsity boys lost both baker games (182-199, 138-173). They bowled team games of 848 and 814 to Adrian’s 791 and 865.

ELLEN MAE SPOHR

Ellen Mae Spohr, age 85, of Britton passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011 at home surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born on December 14, 1926 in Adrian the daughter of Roy and Lillian (Marthey) Eberline. On December 3, 1971 she married Gladwin Spohr in Tecumseh and he survives.

SUZANNE M. SAYLOR

Suzann M. Saylor, age 66, of Tecumseh, passed away December 18, 2011. A memorial mass will celebrate her life at 3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh with Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler officiating. Visitation will be at 2 p.m., one hour prior to the service. Donations in her memory may be made to Arbor Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Frenzen named director of art at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp

Frenzen accepted the directorship of the renowned facility’s visual arts department in October of 2010 and completed his first year at his new post recently.“Blue Lake is a magical place for any student who is interested in any of the fine arts,” Frenzen said of the world-renowned campus in the woods, situated 12 miles north of Muskegon. “The atmosphere at the camp is really unique.

Kiwanis Club calls on its experts to conduct scholarship workshop

Indians beat by Milan in home opener, follow with 70-17 loss at Bedford

By MICKEY ALVARADOBeing unable to push the ball inside the paint at home against visiting Milan in its varsity boys basketball home opener on Friday, Dec. 9, Tecumseh’s Indians fell 66-36 in a non-conference contest against the visiting Big Reds. Tecumseh followed with a 70-17 loss at Bedford on Tuesday evening and fell to 0-3 overall.The Kicking Mules dominated the game from the opening quarter, shutting out the Indians while putting 27 points on the scoreboards. Tecumseh scored just four points in the second quarter, six in the third and only two in the fourth and final quarter.

Clinton boys bounce to 3-0

By MICKEY ALVARADOPotential, and a lot of it, is what Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team is showing of late especially after downing a scrappy Summerfield squad 71-68 in a Tri-County Conference contest at home on Tuesday evening.“We beat a darn good team here. An overwhelming league favorite, in my opinion,” said Clinton coach Mike Ruhl.The Redskins brought a different style to the court this season after graduating last year’s starters.“We’re smaller, quicker and playing much different,” said Ruhl. “It’s fun to coach and fun to watch. We’re creating shots for each other.

ROBERT E. “BOB” HAMDEN

Robert E. Hamden, age 92, of Tecumseh, passed away December 10, 2011. Robert was born August 27, 1919 in Adrian, Michigan the son of Harvey and Linnie (Jenkins) Hamden. On March 13, 1954, he married June Kilbury in Angola, Ind., the love of his life, and she preceded him in death October 2, 2002. In 1938 Robert graduated from Adrian High School. After graduation he served his country as a member of the U. S. Army in Egypt and Africa.
