Who Selects our President?

One of the greatest traits of our democratic society is the fact that we get to choose our leaders.  With the exception of a few appointed positions, all of our local, state, and federal officials are elected by “We the People”.   Or are they? Let’s focus on the highest office, the position that wields the most power in the world, that of US President.  Do you really think “We the People” elect that person?  I don’t! Early in our election process several interested parties declare their candidacy for the office.  They campaign is several states, vying for primary votes, caucus votes, whatever votes they can garner.  They participate in ‘debates’, some even televised that are little more than a dog and pony show, totally without substance.  In the end, it seems it is the power brokers of whichever party that selects their candidate.   Sure, in states that have primaries, it could be argued that “We the People” select the party nominee.  In fact, as in Michigan, a citizen who votes has to declare which party’s primary to participate in.  If, in

TIPTON COMMUNITY Congregational Church Community Wellness and Safety Program

TIPTON COMMUNITY Congregational Church, 9240 Tipton Hwy., Tipton, will hold a “Community Wellness and Safety” program on Thursday, April 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  The detective Lou Ann Bearden of the Lenawee County Sheriff Department will speak on protection of property and personal safety.  Fire chief Mark Wilson and firearm Rob Valdes of the Sand Lake Fire Department will speak on surviving/preventing an emergency and fire and tornado awareness.  Also Mary Alice Thompson, owner of Heart Wood Place, Holistic Wellness Center will speak on positive health behaviors and habits for an improved quality of life.

La Leche Legue Meeting

Planning to breastfeed or currently nursing?  Then you’ll want the information and encouragement that La Leche League provides.  Whether you’re pregnant or already nursing, LLL has something for you—tips and techniques shared by mothers who have enjoyed a successful breastfeeding relationship.  A meeting will be held in Tecumseh on Monday, April 7 at 7 p.m.  For directions to the meeting or more information, please call Jennifer at (517) 592-4750 or Kelly at (517) 423-3462.  All mothers and their babies are welcome.

Clinton Township Library Used Book Sale

THE CLINTON TOWNSHIP Library, 100 Brown St., Clinton, will hold a used book sale on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

JESSIE LEE “SISTER” BROWN

Jessie Lee “Sister” Brown, 74, of Adrian, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at her home.  She was born October 14, 1933, in Elaine, Arkansas, to Clarence and Viola (Evans) Langford.  On June 1, 1952, she married R.T. Brown in Elaine, Arkansas.  He preceded her in death on March 22, 2001.  

Jessie was the owner and operator of Jessie’s Day Care. She dearly enjoyed and loved caring for the children and they loved her.  Jessie loved reading her Bible.  She was a member of the Bethel AME Church, where she was on the Usher Board and a faithful stewardess, also serving as a trustee.  Jessie dearly loved the Lord.  She loved to receive flowers, cook for her family, she loved to talk, and dressing up and wearing hats.  Jessie was known as the “Hat Lady”.

Jessie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Jessie is survived by three daughters, Minnie “Lou” Brown of Adrian, Patricia Brown Johnson and her husband, Will of Calumet City, IL, Sandra Brown of Adrian; a sister, Classie Smith of Adrian; four grandchildren, Anthony Brown, Andrew Brown, William Johnson and Jessica Johnson; 6 great-grandchildren, including, Alicia, Jasmine, Christopher and Caleb; a special nephew, Roosevelt Putten of Monroe; her special friend, Ruby Langston of Toledo, Ohio; and her god-daughter, Nikki Jones; and two special little girls, Ciara and Jaylynn.  

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Hattie Ragland and a special niece, Thelma Williams and her god-mother, Mrs. Lela Elmore.
Funeral services for Jessie were held on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at the Anderson Funeral Home with Pastor Oveta Fuller-Caldwell officiating.  Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
