When the dust finally settled on Britton's basketball court on Monday evening Clinton's girls had pulled off a dominating 73-34 Tri-County Conference victory, but just as important to coach Bart Bartels, the Redskins' secondary players received a whole lot of valuable playing time.

Clinton's full court pressure in the opening quarter stunned Britton and the Redskins took a 10-0 lead in the first 30 seconds of the contest with junior Kelsea Karapas scoring all of the points. By the end of the quarter Clinton led 21-8 but had Bartels decided to continue playing his starting lineup it could have been a much greater spread. Instead he went to the bench and the 'Skins took a 36-19 lead by the end of the first half.

The Redskins continued to control the game in the second half and finished the third quarter up 55-27.

Clinton Karapas and senior Carmin Herrst were relentless on defense and forced many Tory turnovers. Their efforts allowed a well spread scoring attack by the Redskins. Karapas led in scoring with 24 points and also added six steals. Herrst added 12 points and five steals. Clinton's Hannah Payne had 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Joelle Groeb dished out four assists. Brooke Scheffler pulled down eight rebounds for Clinton.

Britton’s Audrey O’Koney led the Tories (1-3) with 16 points and five assists.
The Redskins are now 4-0 and 2-0 in the TCC.

Clinton junior point guard Kelsea Karapas (10) gets above Britton’s Audrey O’Koney for a shot at the net. Karapas scored the first 10 points of the game and led all scoring with 24 points.

Clinton boys improve

Clinton's varsity boys basketball team had one thing in mind before going into Christmas break - leave on a positive note.

After two opening week losses at the hands of Manchester and Ida, Vandercook Lake was an experienced team the Redskins could measure themselves against. Clinton knew that the Jayhawks could shoot from the perimeter, but coach Mike Ruhl believed his team's size was an advantage and guard-play should carry his boys through the contest.
Clinton was able to show improvement in the contest but ultimately lost 56-51.
The 'Skins came out of the gate impressively, leading 20-12 at the end of the first quarter, and 29-17 at the half. But as the second half took off the Redskin's opportunities to put the game away weren't taken advantage of and Vandercook Lake clawed back into the game with perimeter shooting.

“I was very pleased with our effort on the boards (49-33 advantage), as well as our first half output on both ends of the floor,” said Ruhl. “We need to follow up our first half with an even better second half in games if we plan to contend for the league.

“I have a great deal of confidence in this team, and the potential of us turning our rough start into a conference championship after break is over,” Ruhl added.

Clinton's leaders against Vandercook Lake were Nic Greenwood with 17 points, nine rebounds and six blocks and Tyler Hoelzer with 14 points, nine rebounds and four steals; Nate Dreslinski added seven points and 10 rebounds; Travis Houghton added five points and five assists; and Rick Smith (5 steals and 9 rebounds) and Rylie Robinson (4 assists) each chipped in four points.
