Garden Club makes donation to local elementary school

To the Editor,

On behalf of Tecumseh Acres Elementary School I would like to let all of our families know that we received a generous cash donation for our October Classroom Project. This gift of money was given to us from the Little Garden Club in honor of the Shirley Feight Memorial.

The garden club has already provided a cash donation to help us plant our first butterfly garden in the spring of 2008. It has since drawn the attention of many butterflies, and even an occasional hummingbird.

We are now collecting the seeds from this garden to help us learn more about our curriculum. We also will be using the seeds to help us make holiday gifts for our families.
We will use the money to purchase a bench for our students to sit and enjoy the gardens or rest for a moment after working in them. Thank you Tecumseh Garden Club for all you do and for supporting and nurturing stewardship for our earth.

Thanks merchants, police for helping with trick or treat

To the Editor,

The Tecumseh Economic Development Department would like to express our sincere thanks to the downtown merchants for the overwhelming participation in Trick or Treat Tecumseh on Saturday, Oct. 31. It was a “Boo’tiful” day! The streets were lined with ghosts and goblins, super heroes and princesses of all ages enjoying this “spooktacular” event. We appreciate all the “mummies” and daddys who brought their little ones out for this special day time Trick or Treat event.

Special thanks to the police department for providing the crossing guard “witch” who assisted everyone crossing the street safely. Thank you to all who participated in this “frightfully delightful” community event!

John William Shuey

John W. Shuey, 86, of Tecumseh, passed away Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family after a short illness.

John was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Reinerton, Pa.  He often entertained his family with stories of growing up in small picturesque Williams Valley in southeastern Pennsylvania.  The fifth of seven children born to Charles Wesley and Bettie Eva (Schrope) Shuey, his tales of life during the depression were both inspirational and instructive.  Despite trying economic times, closed coal mines and a father out of work; his story was one of faith, self reliance, independence, thrift, and hard work.  Through it all there was family, friends and wonderful memories of camping and hiking, hunting and fishing in the woods and mountains he loved.

After graduating from Porter-Tower High School in 1940, he was chosen, with 38 other young men, for the 1943 class of Williamson Free School in Media, Pa.  There he learned his mason's trade, providing the foundation for his later career in general construction.  After graduating from Williamson, John enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1943.  He served his country as an airplane/propeller mechanic until 1946.  He was proud of his military service, and felt that it, along with his time at Williamson, had been crucial in transforming his life.

On May 28, 1949, he married Bette J. Hand at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Reinerton, Pa.  Post war growth and building opportunities led them to relocate in the Washington, D.C. area, where, together, they built their home and raised five children.  This past May they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
