NewSong team delivers community donations to Moore, Oklahoma

After a tornado devastated the community of Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, Pastor Tom Hawkins, of NewSong Community Church, knew that he wanted to do something, so he put the matter to prayer. Soon, one of the church leaders broached the subject of a relief mission to the area.“So we put the word out on Facebook and in the newspaper and so many people stepped up with supplies,” said Hawkins. At the same time, the church received a call from a donor who wished to remain anonymous.“They said they would pay for a 20-foot U-Haul if we would drive it down there,” Hawkins said.

Raisin Township taking road surveys

The Charter Township of Raisin is seeking public input in order to make a more informed decision about future maintenance and repair of township roads. A 20-question survey was launched Wednesday, June 12, online and is accessible by visiting www.raisintownship.com.“Our new website is still under construction, but there is a link there to take the survey,” said Jay Cavanaugh, Raisin Township Supervisor.

LISD Center for a Sustainable Future dedicated on Tipton Highway

Lenawee Intermediate School District’s (LISD) new Center for a Sustainable Future campus on Tipton Highway was dedicated with a program, ribbon cutting and open house, complete with tours of the Net Zero energy classroom and laboratory structure, on Monday, June 10. Instead of a ribbon, a garland of greenery was cut.

History brought to life during tours of Brookside Cemetery

A group of Tecumseh Volunteers, led by historian Bob Elliott, revived a prior tradition by holding the 2013 Brookside Cemetery Tour on Saturday, June 8 at 5 and 7 p.m. Group members reenacted the stories of several individuals whose monuments are located in Brookside, including the story of a Civil War nurse and several military members.Event proceeds will go toward restoration of a Civil War monument that sits in the front of the cemetery.

Retiring Tecumseh superintendent reflects on 47 years of service

Supt. Mike McAran has been the chief administrator in Tecumseh Public Schools for eight years, so long that many people may have forgotten his long service to the school district before assuming the top post.He began in the system in 1976 when Tecumseh High School (THS) principal Clarence Lacny hired him as assistant principal. Soon after beginning at THS, he added athletic director to his assistant principal duties when Don Brazee retired from that post.

Britton resident to compete for Miss Michigan title

Britton resident Charlotte Squires will be competing in the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant on June 13, 14 and 15 in Muskegon. Squires became eligible as a contestant when she won the crown of Miss River Raisin Festival last summer. Young women from 33 areas of the state will be competing at the event.Charlotte is the daughter of Teresa and Michael Squires, and attended fifth through 11th grade in Tecumseh Public Schools. She is a 2010 Lenawee Christian School graduate. She also has held the title of Lenawee County Fair Queen.

Rec program helped turn ‘couch potatoes’ into 5K runners

To the Editor,I want to thank Tecumseh Parks and Recreation for offering the Couch to 5K (C25K) Training Program this spring and hosting the Tecumseh Fun Run on June 9. Special thanks to Kristie, Deena, and John for volunteering their time once a week to train us. I also want to congratulate all the C25K runners. We did it! I think the majority of us that registered for the C25K Program had our doubts. Who would have thought that you could take couch potatoes and turn them into 5K runners.

Promenade was ‘resounding success,’ thanks supporters

To the Editor,I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make 2013 Promenade Tecumseh a resounding success. This year’s tour included nine locations including the Museum. Although weather plays a huge role in such an event, none of this would be possible without such gracious homeowners. Tecumseh is lucky to have loving caregivers to these old homes. This event can only succeed with the help of our local sponsors and volunteers.A special thanks to the Promenade Committee for all their hard work putting this tour together. We look forward to Promenade 2014.

Happy to be home, living in Michigan’s ‘best-kept secret’

To the Editor, This past weekend the Promenade Tecumseh Historic Home Tour welcomed residents and guests to visit nine properties in our beautiful city. For the 36th year, this all-volunteer team of workers provided historic information and hospitality to all who took part in this event.

Indians advance to state quarterfinals and beat Stevensville Lakeshore 5-1

After picking up the Division II regional title on Saturday, June 8, with a 8-5 victory against hosting Airport Tecumseh’s varsity softball team traveled to Battle Creek on Tuesday and defeated Stevensville Lakeshore 5-1 in the state quarterfinal.Tecumseh led Lakeshore 2-0 by the end of the fifth inning and increased its lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning. Complete results were not available by the Herald’s press time.The Indians will now face Livonia Ladywood in the state semifinal on Friday, June 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

Indian squeezed out of regional title

Tied 1-1 and in an extra inning at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division II regional championship baseball game at Carleton Airport on Saturday, June 8, Tecumseh’s season came to an abrupt end when Milan squeezed out a run to end the game with a 2-1 victory.The Big Reds came from behind after the Indians took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning by tying the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Georgianna “Jo” Steele

Georgianna “Jo” Steele age 85, of Tecumseh passed away June 11, 2013 at home surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice of Lenawee.At her request cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date.Final resting place is at Maple Shade Cemetery, Onsted, Mich.Arrangements were made by J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh.

Timothy R. Rodabaugh

Timothy R. Rodabaugh, age 72, of Tecumseh, passed away June 9. 2013.Tim was born October 24, 1940 in Bath, N.Y., the son of Randall and Thelma (Saxton) Rodabaugh. On February 4, 1961 he married DeSira “Diz” Tolford. For 10 years he was a tool and die maker at Tecumseh Products Co. and then a supervisor for 10 years at Chevrolet in Adrian.

Verlanders hold book-signing in Tecumseh at Sports Hut

Detroit Tiger ace pitcher Justin Verlander’s parents, Richard and Kathy, visited Tecumseh on Tuesday, June 11, for a book signing at the Sports Hut.Their book, titled Rocks Across the Pond: Lessons Learned.
