Goff records hole-in-one

Vince Goff recorded a hole-in-one at the Hantz Golf Club on Sunday, June 24. Goff used a No. 4 hybrid on Hole No. 4, a par 3, 184-yard distance. Witnessing Goff record his hole-in-one were John Lapsley, John Toburen and Kim Skelton.

Tecumseh High School hires two varsity coaches

Tecumseh High School recently announced the hiring of two new varsity coaches.Eddy Foley was hired as the varsity boys cross-country coach, replacing Jim Brown, who transferred to LISD. Foley is a technician for Tecumseh Public Schools. He has assisted long distance track runners for the past three seasons at Tecumseh. Foley was an All-State runner in high school cross-country and was a member of Grand Haven’s state title team. He also ran track at Trine University.Jared Adamson, formerly of Saint Clair, was hired as the varsity girls basketball coach, replacing Jamie Mossburg.

Powell, Britt named to all-state teams

Two Tecumseh High School varsity baseball players were recently named to the Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams.Tecumseh senior catcher Jared Powell received First Team All-State honors in Division 2 while Tecumseh junior outfielder Jacob Britt was named to the Division 2 Second Team All-State.Powell and Britt led Tecumseh to a school-record 29 wins and the Southeastern Conference White Division championship.Powell batted .416 with 12 doubles, three home runs, 41 RBIs and a .527 on-base percentage during the regular season.

Free-throw event helps advance transplant funds for Tecumseh native

More than $48,000 has now been raised in honor of former Tecumseh resident Jessica Bailey Johnson, who is in need of a lung transplant. Funds have been donated through the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) and local fundraisers.Free Throws for Life event organizer Derek Atkinson said that between $4,000 and $5,000 of that was raised through the basketball event held in Tecumseh May 12. Several individuals each threw free throws for one hour each, with 5,753 free throws being made in 12 hours. Jessica has cystic fibrosis.

Hopes person with purse will return it to rightful owner

To the Editor,I don’t know whether you would consider printing this in the Letter to the Editor section. It appears below. This has been quite traumatic for me and I hope to reach the unknown person who found my wallet, which had identification right in the front, but decided to keep it instead. I don’t generally carry that amount of $$ with me, but it was for a special birthday dinner. Would appreciate you passing this message on in the hope that this person may read it.

Thomas M. Robinson

Thomas M. Robinson, born August 20, 1964 in Detroit, Mich., died June 30, 2012 at the age of 47. Beloved husband of Melissa. Dear son of Maria and late Daniel. Loving father of Jessica (John), Michael (Amber), Daniel and Marayna. Brother of Michael, Steven, Daniel (Cathy) and Drew (Theresa). He will always be missed by his aunts and uncles, niece and nephews, and many cousins. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from the Detroit fire department. John Henry Balinski

John Henry Balinski, age 90, of Tecumseh, formerly of Warren, died June 30, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.He was born July 15, 1921 in Brooklyn, NY the son of John and Mary (Wysocki) Balinski. On March 31, 1951 he married Mary Zawitzki at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Hamtramck. She preceded him death on June 20, 1983. John was a decorated veteran of the U.S.

Ronald W. Wonderly

Ronald W. Wonderly, Petersburg, Mich., (formerly of Milan) age 83, died Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Magnum Care of Monroe. He was born in Britton, Michigan to William and Margaret (Kent) Wonderly. On May 29, 1948 he married Emma Jane Curry in Britton, Mich., and she preceded him in death on December 8, 1991. After 42 years of service Ron retired from Tecumseh Products. He also farmed most of his life and was a member of Lenewee and Monroe Antique Tractor clubs. He also served as a constable for Monroe County for 12 years.

William "Bill" and Patricia Holmes

Former Tecumseh mayor and long-time pharmacist William “Bill” Holmes and his wife Patricia will be remembered at a special memorial service on Saturday, July 7, beginning at 11 a.m. at St.

Marion “Bizzie” Ford

Marion “Bizzie” Ford, 84, of Tecumseh, passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti, on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. He was born June 26, 1928 in Morenci, Mich., the son of Marion Earl and Thelma Margaret (Watson) Ford. He was married to Mary Lou Gallup on October 7, 1951 and she survives.Marion was a graduate of Ohio State University and the University of Baltimore Law School. He was employed as a Patent Attorney for Wacker Silicone for 27 1/2 years, retiring January 1, 1994.

Steve Winstead

Steve Winstead, age 58, died June 20, 2012 after a short battle with leukemia. He was born on May 24, 1954. Steve is survived by his wife, Natalee, children, daughter, Melissa Rotarius (James Thompson), sons Christian (Lori), Jonathan (Leanne) of Lakeland, Fla., and Sons Steven and Justin of Spring Hill, Fla. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Matthew Rotarius, Michael, Jonathan and LylaJane Winstead. Steve lived in the Tecumseh area for many years and went to Tecumseh High School. He considered the Tecumseh area his home. Services will be held on June 30, 2012 at 10 a.m.

Zorn Park Splash Pad helps kids beat the heat

Several states across the country have been under heat advisories for the past week or more, and storms this weekend have found many dealing with triple-digit temperatures without power. That means no electricity to power fans or air conditioners or even refrigerators to provide cool drinks or ice.Ten-day forecasts for the Tecumseh area show temperatures continuing in the high 80s to mid-90s, with some potential for more storms possible. The rising of the thermometer means people are looking for relief from the heat.

License approval makes way for winery expansion

Tecumseh City Council members approved a resolution on Monday, July 2, for Pentamere, Inc. to pursue a Small Winemaker License for an expansion of the winery to 109 W. Logan Street.Pentamere owner, Ed Gerten, said the winery has a tentative agreement on the building, which formerly housed The Purple Pear Tree, subject to the licensure process. “Basically, what we’re planning to do with the site is to make that our new expanded production and warehouse facility,” Gerten told the council members.

Coalition for Youth prepares to battle substance abuse

Like most communities across the country, Tecumseh is facing a potential epidemic involving its young people. Drug and alcohol use have been a concern for decades, but the drugs many young people are experimenting with today are harder, more addictive and not thought to be a problem by some parents and community members. The growing use of opiates – prescription drugs as well as heroin – and the formerly legal synthetic marijuana are becoming more prevalent.

First Presbyterian Church congregation remains divided

Decisions about the future of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh that will affect its divided congregation are still being worked out, following a recent decision handed down by the Permanent Judicial Commission of the Synod of the Covenant. Last month the Maumee Valley Presbytery denied a request from the majority group of church members, including Rev. Richard Mortimer, to leave the Presbyterian Church, USA (PCUSA) and become members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Denomination.

THS staff receive commendation for suicide prevention program

During the “Good News” portion of Monday night’s Tecumseh School Board meeting, Lenawee County Community Mental Health representative Katherine Szewczuk read a proclamation and presented an award to staff and administrators of Tecumseh High School (THS) for a program on suicide prevention that the school had presented to the student body earlier in the year. “It was a marvelous program and one that can serve as a good example for other schools,” Szewczuk said.

Tecumseh Public Schools to begin search for new superintendent

“We’re going to be very aggressive in our search for a new superintendent,” said Tecumseh School Board Vice President Jim Rice at Monday night’s regular meeting of the trustees.
