Tecumseh City Council approved a resolution Monday night, July 1, that directed City Manager Kevin Welch to draft a lease agreement between the city and ProMedica for use through 2014 of the Glass Room at the Tecumseh Community Center.Welch said ProMedica approached the city a few months ago regarding exclusive use of the Glass Room for its programs. ProMedica already utilizes the lower floor of the building for its Fitness Connection, and a third story for spinning classes.
On Monday, July 1, demolition crews circled the Irish Hills Towers to tear apart the observation areas. The hope held by the Irish Hills Historical Society to lift the tower tops and make repairs on the ground was not a possibility, according to North American Dismantling, the company hired for demolition. “At this point, this is a $20,000 project for dismantling,” said President of the Irish Hills Historical Society, Donna Boglarsky.Boglarsky personally loaned the society the $20,000 necessary to demolish the unsafe tops of the building.
Former Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Mike McAran’s first day of retirement was Monday, July 1. By the end of the day, he was interim superintendent of schools for the Morenci school district.“They contacted me last Monday [June 24], and I interviewed for the job last Wednesday [June 26],” McAran said. “I was hired last night [July1].” His last day on the job was Friday, June 28.McAran’s 12-hour retirement comes as no surprise to those who are aware of his 47 years of service to Lenawee County schools.
An open house has been scheduled from 3-to-5 p.m. at Britton Park on Saturday, July 13, in honor of Britton-Macon High School’s 1963 and 1964 Class D boy’s state basketball championship teams.
The Leh Nah Weh Native American Organization’s 2013 powwow was held at Mitchell Park in Raisin Township on Saturday and Sunday, June 29-30, in memory of board member Art Brant, Mohawk warrior for Native rights. Several tents set up for the event on Friday, June 28, met with high winds and were blown over. Cheyenne, a vendor from Hillsdale attending the powwow, said that tornado type winds blew through, picked up his tent, at approximately 6:30 p.m., and threw it several hundred yards away. By Saturday morning the tents were replaced or repaired and open for business.
Skydive Tecumseh found itself in the center of a media storm on Monday evening after the Federal Aviation Administration began an investigation into the close proximity of a Spirit Airlines jet and one of the Skydive Tecumseh jump planes in airspace over Tecumseh on Sunday. Skydive Tecumseh owner Franz Gerschwiler was in contact with the FAA on Monday, and FAA investigators interviewed the jump plane’s pilot.“They took pains to say ‘You’ve done everything right all season,’” Gerschwiler said.
Nancy Rae McKowen, age 73, of Naples, Fla., passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Physicians Regional Medical Center. Nancy was born August 13, 1939 in Lima, Ohio to the late Carl and Lucretha (Hittle) Ralston. She resided in the Naples area since 2002. Originally from Delphos, Ohio, Nancy graduated from Jefferson High School. Before settling in Naples, Nancy and her family lived in several places including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Tennessee.Survivors include her loving husband Timothy L.
A group of young performers were strutting their stuff on the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA) stage during a summer drama camp on Thursday afternoon, June 27. They wore flashy sunglasses and were getting the moves down to lyrics that went, “You don’t know you’re beautiful — uh uh,” by One Direction, and when they sang, “the way you flip your hair,” everyone in the line did a dramatic head toss.The group, led by Tecumseh Youth Theater (TYT) alumnus Emily McCormley, was gearing up for a Friday night performance that would cap off a week of drama camps put on by volunteers of TYT.
Associated Charities of Lenawee County is preparing for its annual “Back to School” program to provide clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies to Lenawee children. The 2013 distribution will run August 19-22.Registration begins July 2 and families must be pre-registered before Aug. 9.
At their meeting on June 19, Library Trustee Gayle Keiser formally offered a letter of resignation to the Tecumseh District Library (TDL) Board of Trustees. She plans to concentrate on her writing and publishing career. Board President Karen Stoops reluctantly accepted Keiser’s resignation. “We are grateful for her invaluable help in getting the millage passed,” said Stoops,” and for her insightful work as a Trustee for the past two years. She will be greatly missed.”The loss of Keiser leaves a vacancy on TDL’s Board.
While clean drinking water is often taken for granted by most Americans, a lot of work can go into maintaining required standards. Tecumseh’s Public Utilities Department released its annual drinking water quality report on Monday, June 17, entitled, “Consumer’s Confidence Report 2012: Water Quality From Your Tap,” which details the testing process and how the department reaches its goal of providing a safe and dependable supply of drinking water to the community. In its final meeting of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, the Tecumseh School Board appointed former trustee Debbie Johnson-Burgess to a vacant seat, approved next year’s budget, and bade farewell to retiring Supt. Mike McAran, thanking him for his years of service to Tecumseh Public Schools, including eight years at the helm.Two district residents had applied for consideration for the board seat vacated by trustee Matt Oren last month when he moved from the district: Kathy Koch and Debbie Johnson-Berges.
When Cindy Faust of Britton started working with the Ridgeway Fire Department as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) she knew she would eventually have to decide whether to get her firefighter certification. In October, Faust began the process along with volunteer firefighters throughout Lenawee County. Jeff Armstrong of the Cambridge Township Fire Department works every year with the certification classes.

Okay?I read in the Herald that you were considering a trail for bikes. Fine, if you first put a bathroom at Cal Zorn Park, where it belongs. It is so hard for me — a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother — to sit in my house and see other parents trying to get their little one to the bathroom at this park. Have either of you, or any of the other people on city council, even been to this park?
Elmer E. Bohannon, 89, of Adrian, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 21, 2013, at Herrick Manor.Born August 25, 1923, in Red Bay, Alabama, he was the son of Arlander and Mattie (Blackburn) Bohannon.During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp as a sergeant. On May 31, 1952, Elmer married Emma “Alice” Evans in Angola, Indiana, and she survives.Elmer worked for Tecumseh Products for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served in many capacities including deacon, treasurer, and Sunday school teacher.
There are some very large fish in the state of Michigan being pursued by avid anglers who’ll pay top dollar to hook into a keeper hauled out of the Great Lakes. But there are also those who choose to stay close to home and the small ponds scattered across the state including those right here in Tecumseh where big fish are being landed.Paul Autry of Tecumseh recently caught a large 37-inch pike in Globe Mill Pond behind Tecumseh’s Community Center near the dam and went back to try his luck again four days later.
Ilah M. Brooks, 85, of Belding, died Sunday morning, June 23, 2013 at Heartland Health Care Center in Ionia. Ilah was born on September 4, 1927 in Alpena, Mich., to Clare and Mary (Olsen) Dority.
