Kiwanians help citizens display patriotism through flag project

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Tecumseh are helping citizens and businesses, who want to demonstrate their patriotism, do so through a special flag subscription program. For $30 per year, citizens may have flags displayed at their homes or businesses on five major holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, July 4, Labor Day and Veterans Day. “We provide the flags, and we’ll put them up and take them down,” said Dr. Cal Tuttle, a Kiwanis Club member. “We put a sleeve in the yard with a cap on it that sits below mowing level.

Livery set to open following city lease agreement

Tecumseh Paddling Company could be setting up business for a recreational canoe and kayak livery service at the Tecumseh Community Center as early as next week, now that owner Mark Johnson has signed a lease agreement with the city. Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch said the agreement was signed on Thursday, June 6.Tecumseh City Council had directed Welch to draft a lease agreement that would allow Tecumseh Paddling Company to lease an unimproved section of the building’s lower level to operate the recreational business from, and the council approved the proposed lease on Monday, June 3.

Red Mill Dam renovation plan in process by county drain commission

Some simultaneous tasks are being conducted that could yet allow the Lenawee County Drain Commission to keep its goal of a late summer drawdown of Red Mill Pond so maintenance work can be done on the dam prior to winter. The engineering firm, Fishback, Thompson, Carr and Huber (FTC&H) of Grand Rapids has 50 percent of the dam renovation plan completed, according to Lenawee County Drain Commissioner Stephen May.“Our plan is still to do the work this fall,” May said.

Art in the Park among weekend Promenade events

Community Arts of Tecumseh (CAT) will host its first ever arts fair, Art in the Park, at Smith Park, 804 N. Evans St., this weekend. The event will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, June 9, from noon to 5 p.m. as an accompaniment to the Promenade Tecumseh home tours.Mary Lou Olds, Executive Director of CAT, said that Art in the Park is an event that’s tied with CAT’s identity and the art fair will offer people an opportunity to view art as an interactive experience.

TCA reduces national tour season to two shows

Tecumseh City Council adopted budget amendments for the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA) fund on Monday night, June 3, that reflect a change from the adopted budget and estimated deficit of $68,000 to an anticipated deficit of $36,000.Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch said that Director of Cultural and Leisure Services, Shelley Lim, and TCA Operations Manager Kathy Fields, and other staff, had been working for several weeks to find a way to close the gap.“It’s still a loss, but at least it hasn’t gotten bigger,” said Welch. “Hopefully we can make a profit during the next budget year.

Byron “Barney” Goodman

Byron “Barney” Goodman, age 94, of Tecumseh passed away June 2, 2013.Barney was born Jan. 28, 1920 in Waldron, the son of Daniel and Rachel (MacDonald) Goodman. On June 12, 1947 he married Betty Butler in Pittsford, who preceded him in death on May 20, 1997.Barney graduated from Waldron High School in 1938, then worked for Wabash Railroad before serving in the U. S. Army in WWII in the Combat Engineers in North Africa and then Burma for four years. He retired from Tecumseh Products after 42 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 34.

Virginia P. “Suzie” Dollison

Virginia P. “Suzie” Dollison, age 92, of Maryville, Tenn., formerly of Tecumseh, passed away April 23, 2013.Graveside services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Brookside Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Myers officiating. Messages to the family may be made online at www.pursefuneralhome.com.

James Lee Anderson

James Lee Anderson, age 89, of Tecumseh died Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at ProMedica Bixby Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born June 7, 1923 in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Harold and Lillian (Simonsen) Anderson. On June 4, 1949 in Minneapolis, Minn., he married Emily Wheeler. Emily preceded him in death on November 15, 2012. Jim attended Cal Poly and graduated from the University of California-Berkley with a degree in Economics. He retired in July of 1988 from United Bank & Trust as Trust Officer and Vice President. Jim served his country during WWII as a pilot in the U.S. Navy.

Hyundai eyes large area of Macon Township for proving grounds location

MACON – Residents of Macon Township attended a meeting Monday night, June 3, to get information about the possibility of Hyundai locating a proving grounds on land currently owned by Ceres Partners. The information is speculative, and residents learned township officials know very little.The property believed to be of interest to Hyundai is a large segment of land, part of 1,250 acres, bordered by Ford Highway to the west, Pennington Road to the north and Welch Road to the south.

Brooks selected to state Hospice Dream Team

Gloria Brooks has been a nurse for 25 years, but found her true calling six years ago when she started working for Hospice of Lenawee. Her enthusiasm for her work and her love of her patients inspired Brooks’ supervisor to nominate her for the Hospice of Michigan Dream Team. Brooks was selected as the registered nurse representative on the Dream Team.“I was flabbergasted,” Brooks said of the honor.“They look for exceptional staff members that stand out among all the rest,” said Patient Care Coordinator, Linda Anderson, RN, BSN. “I felt Gloria measured up to that expectation.

Taking flight from cancer

Kelly Rinne, Vice President of Mortgage Sales for United Bank and Trust, has learned sweetness can come from life’s bitterest moments. It took a diagnosis of Stage 3 Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2009 to inspire Rinne to fulfill many personal dreams.Along the way she has made friends, inspired her sons and beat her cancer into remission.
