Day care closing, owner sends thank you to community

To the Editor,Souls That Smile Child Care is closing on May 24th, after 17 years in business. I want to thank this community for giving me so many reasons to enjoy caring for children in this wonderful city. I thank the library, post office, grocery stores, banks, restaurants and other local businesses who welcomed us with open arms. Special thanks to “our Amy” for the treats from the Family Frosty. Mrs. Michele has provided playgroup activities and these have been awesome.

Owner of Eden Foods ‘imposing personal choices on others’

To the Editor,In response to Mr. Potters’ recent lawsuit limiting the healthcare choices of his employees, I would like to state: I had been a long time buyer and proponent of Eden Foods. I will certainly stop on both counts if Mr. Potter persists. While Mr. Potter can make these personal choices about healthcare for himself, it is arrogant, and paternalistic to impose those on his employees. Shame on him. This is no impingement of his morals or values, by imposing his personal choices on others he is proving to be a reprehensible person.

City coordinates effort to collect donations for tornado victims

The city of Tecumseh is coordinating a fundraising drive to benefit victims of the May 20 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. Canisters will be located at Tecumseh City Hall, Big Boy, Martin’s Home Center, Schmidt and Sons Pharmacy, Daily Grind, The Dog House Restaurant, Perky’s Eastside, and Perky’s at Pentecost Hwy. Memorial Day to feature flyovers, parade, Brookside Cemetery service

Tecumseh’s Memorial Day commemoration will include the traditional parade at 10 a.m., with a line-up at City Hall and march to Union Street, ending at Brookside Cemetery. “We have 75 to 80 units this year,” said Memorial Day Parade Marshal Gary Naugle. He added that the Plymouth Fife and Drum Corp will again visit the city this year. Council directs city manager to seek livery lease

In a 6-1 vote following several minutes of discussion on Monday, May 20, Tecumseh City Council members authorized City Manager Kevin Welch to pursue a lease agreement with Tecumseh Paddling Company (TPC), owned by Mark and Jennifer Johnson, for rental of space for a canoe and kayak livery at the Tecumseh Community Center. The space would be in an unimproved section of the building’s lower level. Mark Johnson, who currently serves as a river guide in West Virginia, initially approached the city several weeks ago regarding the possibility of operating a business from the community center.

Tecumseh track teams compete at regionals

Tecumseh’s varsity boys track team placed eighth while the Indians’ girls finished 12th at the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional meet at Livonia Ladywood on Saturday. May 18.Chelsea placed first in the boy’s meet with a score of 189 while the Indians were eighth with 37.50.

Tecumseh wins SEC White title

A two game sweep over visiting Adrian on Monday, May 20, gave Tecumseh’s varsity baseball team the Southeastern Conference (SEC) White Division championship. Tecumseh beat the Maples 10-0 and 6-0.Tecumseh head coach Tom Bullinger said that good pitching and timely hitting by a number of players led to the title.“Our seniors have shown great leadership and all eight were able to play together in the second game as a freshman pitched on the mound for us in [Sam] Benschoter,” said Bullinger.

Candace Teegarden

Candace Teegarden, age 69 of Clinton, passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 at her home under the loving care of her family. She was born July 31, 1943 in Tecumseh, Mich., the daughter of Harold and Mary (Swartz) Hull. On November 5, 1966, Candace married James Teegarden; sadly he preceded her in death on February 24, 1999. Candace enjoyed bowling, bingo, gardening, and going to casinos. She loved animals and caring for them.

Jeane Y. Derby

Jeane Y. Derby, age 90 of Tecumseh, died Friday, May 17, 2013 at Promedica Herrick Hospital. She was born June 20, 1922 in Ampthill, England, the daughter of Kenneth and Alice (Matthews) Simpson. She was married to George Derby on December 15, 1943 and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1987.Jeane came to the United States from England in 1946. She was employed at Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh for 20 years, and then worked at Tecumseh Public Schools Library until 1992. Jeane was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Brooklyn and belonged to the Globe Trotters Club.

Edward Paul Jacobs, Jr

Edward Paul Jacobs, Jr., age 62, of Pittsford was unexpectedly called home to be with God, Friday, May 17, 2013.He was born March 31, 1951, in Saline, Mich., to Edward and Joyce (Loyd) Jacobs. He grew up in the Clinton area and lived in Tecumseh and Pittsford in later years. He attended Clinton schools where he participated in golf, cross country, basketball and baseball. He also was a member of the Varsity Club and was Vice President of his senior class.

Nina F. Wright

Nina F. Wright, age 88, of Tecumseh, passed away May 17, 2013.Nina was born March 28, 1925 in McClure, Ohio, the daughter of Harvey and Georgie (Croninger) Harman. On January 27, 1943 she married Curtis Wright in Malinta, Ohio and he preceded her in death August 28, 2005. She was a 1943 graduate of McClure High School in McClure, Ohio. Nina retired from United Savings Bank of Tecumseh after many years of service. She was a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Tecumseh and a member of their knitting group.

Marian A. Ash

Marian A. Ash, age 90, of Tecumseh, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at Hospice of Lenawee with her loving family at her side. She was born January 29, 1923 in Sparta, Michigan the daughter of Carl and Sada (Anderson) Johnson. On March 14, 1943 she married Lawrence Ash, the love of her life, at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Sparta, Mich. Sadly, he preceded her in death in August of 2001.Marian worked in the office of the Daily Telegram, Ford Motor Company, and the Talon Zipper Company. She was a housewife, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Robert Walter Spigiel

Robert Walter Spigiel, age 62 of Tecumseh died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at ProMedica Herrick Hospital. He was born March 15, 1951 to Sylvester Walter and Patricia (Zewicky) Spigiel. Robert married Ruth Ann Podnar on August 25, 1973 in Wyandotte and she survives.In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by one daughter, Erin Marie Spigiel of Sterling Heights; seven brothers and sisters, Rosanne Griggs, David (Deborah) Spigiel, Dianne (Larry) Baygents, Catherine (Steven) Pearson, Patricia (Russell) Small, Alan (Ling) Spigiel and John (Evelyn) Spigiel; and several nieces and nephews.

Janet L. Browning

Janet L. Browning, age 71, of Swanton, Ohio, formerly of Tecumseh, Mich., passed away Monday morning, May 20, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was born September 1, 1941 in Helena, Ohio to Albert and Doris (Donnell) Klotz. On February 10, 1995, she married Gerald A. Browning. Janet was known as a Jack of all Trades. She was a very talented crafter-making ceramics and floral arrangements, and sewing Halloween costumes for her grandkids. She also enjoyed shopping at hobby flea markets, playing cards, and was an avid bowler.

Brian Neil Tracy

Brian Neil Tracy, 46, of Fort Myers, Fla., died on May 12, 2013 at Hope Hospice, Cape Coral, Fla. He was born on January 17, 1967 in Ann Arbor, Mich., a son of Neil Stuart and Jojeane (Jagger) Tracy.A resident of Fort Myers for the past three years, he previously lived in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he worked as a telecommunications technician at a university.He is survived by his sons, Michael Tracy of Mich., and Tim Tracy of Ohio, his father, Neil S. Tracy of Fort Myers, Fla., along with his stepbrothers and stepsisters.A private service will be held by the family.
