Citizens’ group spearheading library millage campaign

The vote for renewal of 1.15 mills and an additional .20 mill for the support of Tecumseh District Library is only four weeks away and organizers of the independent citizen group that has been organized to promote the millage request has been making its case to the public through presentations at various venues and through publication of pamphlets available at the library and other locations. There will be two proposals.

City to waive utility tap fees for residential development

Tecumseh City Council members approved a recommendation by City Manager Kevin Welch on Monday, April 1, that would offer an incentive program for new residential construction. The plan would include waiving sewer and water tap fees for a period of time.“It would be kind of an experiment, because I don’t believe we’ve ever done this before and not too many communities have,” said Welch.

Celtic Crossroads to bring high energy show to the TCA on Sunday

Celtic Crossroads will perform at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA) on Sunday, April 7, beginning at 7 p.m. The performance has been described as a “high energy show,” featuring Celtic music and dance from Ireland, and is said to do for Irish music what “Riverdance” has done for Irish dance.More than 20 instruments will be utilized on-stage, featuring seven world-class musicians. Irish music genres represented include eastern European Gypsy, North American bluegrass, world Classical and Jazz, and various forms of Celtic music.

Downtown businesses to host spring Art Walk

As temperatures slowly warm up and the sun begins to peek out from behind grey winter clouds, the City of Tecumseh is looking forward to a warm spring evening on Friday, April 26 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the first Art Walk of 2013. Working with Community Arts of Tecumseh, city officials are matching artists of all media with merchants.“It’s a really simple mixture,” said Paula Holtz, Tecumseh Economic Development Director. “People really seem to enjoy it.”Local and regional artists showcase their art inside and out of downtown businesses during extended hours.

Kiwanians gives over $9,000 to grads in scholarship program

Resident encourages support of upcoming millage vote for TDL

To the Editor,I just wanted to voice my support for the TDL [Tecumseh District Library] and the millage renewal in May. If you are a resident in the area and have not had the opportunity to visit I would strongly encourage it! There has been a lot of positive change that has gone on for TDL in the last 10 years. From the wonderful curbside appeal to the beautiful rennovations on the inside. TDL offers a tremendous amount of educational and informative programs for all age groups.TDL has had a positive impact for myself and for our children’s education.

Farmer’s Market needs to return to downtown Tecumseh

To the Editor,My copy of “Homefront” magazine arrived yesterday. When I read the article about the Farmers’ Market I was astonished by the last paragraph! It indicated the market would be held in last year’s location out in the “boonies” at Russell Rd. and Maumee.When I called Sarah Taylor she gave the same limp reasons I had heard last year: • “It’s nearer to houses.” Really? What houses?

Camilla Ann Wright

Camilla Ann Wright, age 87, of Adrian, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born June 3, 1925, in Tecumseh to Joseph and Lena (Vestula) O’Pravil. Camilla married the love of her life, Morris “Morrie” Millard Wright on June 4, 1955 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh, Mich., and he preceded her in death on February 11, 2008. Camilla was a member of St. Mary of Good Counsel Parish. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 63 years.

Raymond B. “Brad” Hatch

Raymond B. ”Brad” Hatch, 65, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Pinckney and Tecumseh, died suddenly April 1, 2013 at the VA Medical Center with his wife at his side. Born in Tecumseh, Michigan he was the son of Raymond L. and Bethel Faye (Millspaugh) Hatch. He was a graduate of Tecumseh High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. Brad was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. On July 27, 1973 he married Victoria R. Hayes.

Monita M. Fergus

Monita M. Fergus, age 85, of Britton, Mich., died March 31, 2013 from complications of Parkinsonʼs Disease. Monita was born April 7, 1927 in Blissfield Township, the tenth child of Emiel and Nellie (Downing) Wegner. After the death of her mother she went to live with her Aunt Minnie and Uncle Johnny Morey. She graduated from Blissfield High School in 1944, worked for Dr. Hefron and Dr.

Tecumseh defeats Grass Lake’s Warriors 8-1

Sunshine greeted Tecumseh’s varsity girls soccer team at home on Thursday, March 28, and lifted the Indians’ spirits for a big 8-1 victory over visiting Grass Lake’s Warriors.Tecumseh’s girls went into the game with a 0-1 record, having lost their opening game 7-0 to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard just the day before, but heated up and controlled the field of play to even out their season record. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Kreger let just one of two Warrior shots on goal past her in the opening half.

Patriot boys ready to make some noise

For the past two seasons Briton Deerfield varsity baseball coach Doug Witt has worked with the same core group of players and this season he hopes it all comes together to create some success on the ball field.“We are going to approach this season one game at a time and want to be competitive in what should be a very good Tri-County Conference,” said Witt. “This group has been fun to work with the last two years. They have a strong work ethic and a passion for baseball.”The Patriots have seven returning seniors to help improve on last year’s overall record.

Tanis takes over Britton Deerfield's varsity softball team

Coach Leslie Tanis has taken over Britton Deerfield’s varsity softball team this season, replacing Dawn Cousino. Tanis was an assistant coach for the team last year.Tanis has just two returners in sophomores Morgan Tanis and Katie Rowe. Morgan Tanis will cover the shortstop position while Rowe will cover outfield. Both girls are expected to see time behind the plate as catchers.“We’re on a rebuilding year,” said coach Tanis. “We lost our expected starting pitcher to injury at the end of basketball season.”Laura Rowe will be stepping in as a freshman pitching replacement.

Activity at former Products’ property for ‘fine tuning’ well-monitoring sites

Some Tecumseh residents may have noticed activity on the former Tecumseh Products east side property this week.“We’re essentially fine-tuning the system where the monitoring wells are,” said Jason Smith, Tecumseh Products Corporate Environmental Director. Smith was in town all week, having traveled through a southern Ohio snowstorm from his Paris, Tenn., home where he also oversees environmental issues at another Tecumseh Products plant. He explained that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which had issued an administrative order in 2010, recently changed project managers.

Home show coming to Tecumseh’s Smith Recreation Center

The Lenawee County Association of Home Builders (LCAHB) will be bringing its 29th annual Home and Better Living Show to the Tecumseh community April 5-7. The show, which runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, will be held at the AJ Smith Recreation Center. Past shows have been held primarily at Siena Heights University.“We’re excited about being able to bring the show to Tecumseh and we even had exhibitors who wanted to be a part of it because it’s in Tecumseh this year,” said Judy Carlisle, Executive Officer of LCAHB.

Road Commission awaits funding to fix Occidental/Valley corridor

Lenawee County Road Commission crews were out early Thursday morning, March 28, working on the many potholes that have developed on the Valley Road/Occidental Highway corridor in Raisin Township between Adrian and Tecumseh.“What we’re doing is trying to hold that road together for the next couple of years until we can get the money to fix it,” said Scott Merillat, Managing Director of the Lenawee County Road Commission.
