Tecumseh City Council approves increase in water rates

By DEB WUETHRICHWater rates will be increasing from $1.31 to $1.42 per 1,000 gallons, effective March 1, following approval by Tecumseh City Council on Monday night. Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch said for a household that uses water at a 28,000 gallon average, the cost would be approximately $3 per year.“The reason I’m suggesting that we do this at this time is that we had a small loss in our water fund, and this would help make up for that,” said Welch.

Harvey Schmidt to enter 57th District race for State Representative

By DEB WUETHRICHHarvey Schmidt (D-Tecumseh), who served Tecumseh as mayor for 10 years, was expected to formally announce his candidacy for the Michigan House of Representatives seat in the 57th District on Monday. The kick-off campaign was scheduled for 8 a.m. Feb. 6 in Lenawee County Commission Chambers at the County Courthouse in Adrian.Schmidt said his campaign and tenure, if elected, would focus on job creation and ending the adversarial climate that has dominated the Lansing political landscape for the past year.

City to consider backing bond for dam

By DEB WUETHRICHTecumseh City Council is expected to consider a resolution Monday night allowing the city to authorize a bond so that an engineering study on repairs to the Red Mill Dam may be obtained. The cost to obtain the engineering study is estimated to be $8,000 to $12,000.

Tecumseh flower shop hit by B & E

Ousterhouts Flowers at 220 E. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh, was broken into sometime over the weekend between Saturday, Jan. 28 and Monday, Jan. 30. Approximately $400 in cash was stolen. Police found a door in the greenhouse ajar, with evidence of pry marks and a bent latch. Owner Ginnie S. Travis said that the store was locked up at 5 p.m. closing on Saturday. When the owner opened the store on Monday morning, she noticed the open door and the cash register door was also open. Approximately $200 cash was taken from the cash register and $200 from a safe.

BONNIE L. BUSH

Bonnie L. Bush, age 76, of Tecumseh, passed away Feb. 1, 2012 at Cambrian Assisted Living of Tecumseh. Bonnie was born June 22, 1935 in Washtenaw County, Michigan the daughter of Milton and Elizabeth (Nagy) Naugle. She was a graduate of Britton High School, class of 1953. She was married to Lowell G. Bush on December 10, 1954 in Britton, Mich. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2007.Bonnie worked in downtown Tecumseh during her earlier years and throughout her life as a volunteer to various non-profit organizations in the community.

Jordan Richard rolls perfect 300-game

By MICKEY ALVARADOA perfect game was bowled by Tecumseh’s Jordan Richard on Monday at Ten Pin Alley as the varsity Indians took on visiting Adrian in a big way, defeating the Maples 26-4 to remain undefeated this season.Tecumseh varsity girls coach Ken Richard expected to have an emotional meet against rival Adrian, with the Maples’ girls looking to give a big win to coach Frank Kirkendall, but was confident his Indians would respond accordingly. Respond they did with Jordan putting an exclamation mark on the Indians’ win with her first ever perfect, 300, game.

Patriot girls win two

A pair of wins were picked up by Britton Deerfield’s varsity girls basketball team last week with the Patriot’s defeating both Clinton (51-34) and Whitmore Lake (57-31).The wins improved BD to 6-6 overall.Against Clinton on Tuesday, Jan. 24, BD coach Craig Tanis said, “We played very well defensively. Our defense is getting better and that was definitely the difference tonight. We also had another balanced scoring attack and we finally hit well from the free throw line. All in all, it was another great team effort.

Tecumseh High School graduate goes down under for traveling math mission

By DEB WUETHRICHTHS graduate Carlee Hollenbeck learned about a student teaching opportunity abroad in Australia while she was a student studying for a teaching degree in math, with secondary emphasis, at Grand Valley State University. She was just a freshman then and wasn’t sure how she would finance her portion of the trip. Later, she received a prestigious Knowles Fellowship award from the John Knowles Foundation, based in Philadelphia.

Tribe’s girls bobble ball at Dexter

After picking up its first win of the season last week against Adrian, Tecumseh’s varsity girls basketball team lost 57-19 at Dexter and fell to 1-11 overall.Tecumseh didn’t score a single point in the opening quarter and all seven points scored in the third quarter came from the free throw line.“They outworked us,” said Tecumseh coach Jamie Mossburg. “We didn’t have a very good game, decent effort just executed poorly.”Mattie Wright led the Indians’ offense with five points while Haven Shaffer added four points.

Tecumseh Service Club finalizes annual report

By DEB WUETHRICHThe Tecumseh Service Club recently completed its Year-End Report for 2011. The charitable group offers a food pantry, clothing closet and the Adopt-A-Family for Christmas Program. This year, the group received requests from more than 200 families to be part of the Adopt-A-Family program. Each family was provided with a box of food staples, a turkey, warm clothes, and at least one toy for any children in the family.

Benefits set as Tecumseh native faces lung transplant

Most people take for granted the ability to easily breathe in and out, but for Tecumseh native and young mother Jessica (Bailey) Johnson, who has cystic fibrosis (CF), a terminal genetic disease, breathing is hard work. Jessica is the daughter of Tom and Diane Bailey, former owners of Bailey’s Water Care. Jessica is fighting new battles every day, due to complications related to CF, and now needs a double lung transplant. Part of the transplant process requires Jessica and her husband, Chris Johnson, to demonstrate that they will be able to pay for expenses before and after the surgery.

BD beats Redskins, Trojans

Britton Deerfield’s varsity boys basketball team picked up a pair of wins last week over Clinton and Whitmore Lake.The Patriots defeated Clinton 55-51 after a slow start on Tuesday, Jan. 24. The Redskins took a 21-9 lead by the end of the opening quarter but BD banged away until taking a 39-37 lead by the end of the third. Jordan Osbun scored 16 points and snagged nine rebounds to lead BD.BD traveled to Whitmore Lake on Friday, Jan. 27, and won 65-56 to improve to 6-6 overall.“We are starting to play some good basketball,” said BD coach Darren Shiels.

Tecumseh’s Lewis, Bechtol win All-Star titles

By MICKEY ALVARADOAdrian College’s Merillat Sport and Fitness Center was the location for the annual Lenawee County All-Star Wrestling Tournament on Friday, Jan. 27, where Tecumseh’s varsity wrestlers picked up two championships.Division 2 No. 3-ranked Tecumseh led the county with 11 selections and two alternates while Division 4 No 1-ranked Hudson had 10. Addison and Adrian each had eight wrestlers while Sand Creek had seven.“We were really happy to have the number of guys in the tournament that we had,” said Tecumseh coach Tony Greathouse.

RUTH A. RUDD

Ruth A. Rudd, age 96, formerly of Tecumseh, died Saturday, January 28, 2012 in Florida. She was born on September 23, 1915 in Rankin, Pa., the daughter of George and Frances (Polinski) Full. She married Paul Rudd on October 31, 1936 and he preceded her in death on April 27, 1977.Ruth had been a very active member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh and the Altar Society until moving to Livonia in 2003 and then to Florida in 2011.

Council takes steps to fund new community center

By DEB WUETHRICHTecumseh City Council conducted a public hearing Monday night to consider the city entering into an installment purchase agreement under Act 99 for the purpose of acquiring a community center building which will be located at John W. Smith Park. The structure would include two multi-purpose rooms and office space.The maximum principal amount of the agreement will be $2 million.
