Ronald W. Wonderly

Ronald W. Wonderly, Petersburg, Mich., (formerly of Milan) age 83, died Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Magnum Care of Monroe. He was born in Britton, Michigan to William and Margaret (Kent) Wonderly. On May 29, 1948 he married Emma Jane Curry in Britton, Mich., and she preceded him in death on December 8, 1991. After 42 years of service Ron retired from Tecumseh Products. He also farmed most of his life and was a member of Lenewee and Monroe Antique Tractor clubs. He also served as a constable for Monroe County for 12 years.

William "Bill" and Patricia Holmes

Former Tecumseh mayor and long-time pharmacist William “Bill” Holmes and his wife Patricia will be remembered at a special memorial service on Saturday, July 7, beginning at 11 a.m. at St.

Marion “Bizzie” Ford

Marion “Bizzie” Ford, 84, of Tecumseh, passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ypsilanti, on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. He was born June 26, 1928 in Morenci, Mich., the son of Marion Earl and Thelma Margaret (Watson) Ford. He was married to Mary Lou Gallup on October 7, 1951 and she survives.Marion was a graduate of Ohio State University and the University of Baltimore Law School. He was employed as a Patent Attorney for Wacker Silicone for 27 1/2 years, retiring January 1, 1994.

Steve Winstead

Steve Winstead, age 58, died June 20, 2012 after a short battle with leukemia. He was born on May 24, 1954. Steve is survived by his wife, Natalee, children, daughter, Melissa Rotarius (James Thompson), sons Christian (Lori), Jonathan (Leanne) of Lakeland, Fla., and Sons Steven and Justin of Spring Hill, Fla. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Matthew Rotarius, Michael, Jonathan and LylaJane Winstead. Steve lived in the Tecumseh area for many years and went to Tecumseh High School. He considered the Tecumseh area his home. Services will be held on June 30, 2012 at 10 a.m.

Zorn Park Splash Pad helps kids beat the heat

Several states across the country have been under heat advisories for the past week or more, and storms this weekend have found many dealing with triple-digit temperatures without power. That means no electricity to power fans or air conditioners or even refrigerators to provide cool drinks or ice.Ten-day forecasts for the Tecumseh area show temperatures continuing in the high 80s to mid-90s, with some potential for more storms possible. The rising of the thermometer means people are looking for relief from the heat.

License approval makes way for winery expansion

Tecumseh City Council members approved a resolution on Monday, July 2, for Pentamere, Inc. to pursue a Small Winemaker License for an expansion of the winery to 109 W. Logan Street.Pentamere owner, Ed Gerten, said the winery has a tentative agreement on the building, which formerly housed The Purple Pear Tree, subject to the licensure process. “Basically, what we’re planning to do with the site is to make that our new expanded production and warehouse facility,” Gerten told the council members.

Coalition for Youth prepares to battle substance abuse

Like most communities across the country, Tecumseh is facing a potential epidemic involving its young people. Drug and alcohol use have been a concern for decades, but the drugs many young people are experimenting with today are harder, more addictive and not thought to be a problem by some parents and community members. The growing use of opiates – prescription drugs as well as heroin – and the formerly legal synthetic marijuana are becoming more prevalent.

First Presbyterian Church congregation remains divided

Decisions about the future of the First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh that will affect its divided congregation are still being worked out, following a recent decision handed down by the Permanent Judicial Commission of the Synod of the Covenant. Last month the Maumee Valley Presbytery denied a request from the majority group of church members, including Rev. Richard Mortimer, to leave the Presbyterian Church, USA (PCUSA) and become members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Denomination.

THS staff receive commendation for suicide prevention program

During the “Good News” portion of Monday night’s Tecumseh School Board meeting, Lenawee County Community Mental Health representative Katherine Szewczuk read a proclamation and presented an award to staff and administrators of Tecumseh High School (THS) for a program on suicide prevention that the school had presented to the student body earlier in the year. “It was a marvelous program and one that can serve as a good example for other schools,” Szewczuk said.

Tecumseh Public Schools to begin search for new superintendent

Construction progressing on new residential facility at Tecumseh Place

Clinton picks up second state title

Clinton’s varsity softball team won back-to-back Division 3 state championships with a 4-0 victory over Gladstone in the MHSAA Division 3 championship in Battle Creek on Saturday, June 16.Clinton plated three runs in the third inning on three hits and an error. Ashley Thompson grounded out to start the bottom of the inning but Elizabeth Barkel reached base on an error at third. She advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third base to give the Redskins a good scoring opportunity. Melissa Dowell was walked as Clinton’s next batter and left first base open after stealing second.

Tecumseh 5th at state golf meet

Tecumseh High School’s varsity boys golf team placed fifth overall at the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Division 2 golf championship at Ferris State University’s Katke Golf Course on Saturday, June 16.The Indians totaled 626 with 314 carded Friday and 312 to finish play on Saturday. BH Cranbrook-Kingswood won the state title with a total of 588 (299-289) while DeWitt (615) was second and Big Rapids (621), third. Haslet placed fourth (622).Bobby Thomas led the Indians with a two-day scorecard of 146 to finish tied for seventh place.

Celebration in Junior Nation following Earnhardt win at Michigan International Speedway

Dale Earnhardt Jr. finally broke a four year 143-race drought by winning the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, June 17, and the fans went crazy as he did the burnout at the same track where he had his last win in 2008. High speeds not always best show, say drivers

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series drivers were at Michigan International Speedway a day earlier than usual last week for a chance to test-drive the newly paved track on Thursday, June 14, and talk turned to the issue of speed, since cars were clocking 218 miles per hour going into the first turn that day, with many averaging 200 miles per hour on their runs.“Just because you’re going that fast doesn’t mean it’s going to be a great race,” said Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M/Rite Aid/NextCare Ford for Roush Fenway Racing.

Tecumseh edges Wildcats for district championship

All three of Tecumseh High School’s varsity softball pitchers took part in holding off the Onsted Wildcats to pick up the Division 2 District title and earn the right to advance to regional action in Chelsea on Saturday, June 9.And the win was some pretty sweet payback.The Wildcats eliminated Tecumseh from post-season play last year, in the semifinal, and were on the edge of doing it again, rattling the Indians’ relieving pitcher, Emily Maves, by loading the bases in the sixth inning when down 3-2.

Chelsea stuns Indians, beats Maples for district title

A dramatic come from behind effort by Chelsea in district varsity baseball action closed Tecumseh’s season on Saturday, June 2, with the Bulldogs taking a 10-9 win in the semifinal to advance to the championship final against Adrian. Chelsea went on to win the district title by one run, handing Adrian a 5-4 loss to also end the Maples’ season.It was all Tecumseh in the first frame and a half of the semifinal with Jared Powell smacking a grand-slam home run over the center field fence that gave the Indians a 7-0 lead in the second inning.

Tecumseh boys golf team qualifies for regionals

Tecumseh’s varsity boys golf team faced another challenging round in districts at the Marshall Country Club on Thursday, May 31, due to inclement weather but pulled together for a fourth place finish to qualify for the next round of post-season play.The match opened with rain, followed by hard wind and cold temperatures but the Indians totaled 327 to qualify for regionals in Mason next weekend.Tecumseh senior Bobby Thomas led the Indians with a low round of 77.
