THS girls place first, remain undefeated

Tecumseh’s varsity girls cross country team placed first at Adrian’s Burt Cebulski Invitational at Heritage Park, Wednesday, Aug 28.The Indians scored 56 points to place first while Erie Mason totaled 72 points to finish second and Dundee, 77 points to finish third. The Maples placed fifth with 89 points.Hannah Weatherford placed first for the Indians with a personal best time of 21:18. She pulled away at the second mile and finished 1:18 ahead of the second place runner.

Art Trail Tecumseh unveils expanded program next year

Tecumseh’s successful Art Trail program, which includes annual offerings of new sculptures throughout the community, will be expanding to include some 2-D art next May.The Tecumseh Downtown Development Authority (DDA) is requesting proposals from artists who are interested in submitting original work that will be digitally reproduced for an outdoor public art project. Submissions must be postmarked by Monday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m.

Croswell announces 2013-2014 season

The new season for the Croswell Opera House in Adrian has been announced, and promises music and theater lovers many different ways to enjoy an evening out.The Broadway Season at the Croswell has the Elvis Presley tribute “All Shook Up” kicking off the year, running Sept. 20-29. Set in 1955, a small town girl hopes to meet a certain rock-and-roll star, and when he arrives, romance and rock-and-roll and the magic of Elvis kick in.“Sweeney Todd” is next on the schedule, running Oct. 11-20, and offering a darker musical treat.

‘Spirit of America’ drive at MIS 9/11

BROOKLYN — Michigan International Speedway will partner with Michigan Blood for the Spirit of America blood drive on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The day will include activities honoring and remembering the victims and heroes of 9-11.The annual blood drive at the racetrack began as a tribute in 2002 to honor the victims and heroes of 9-11.

American car makers have 'crossed the threshold' as new models hit showrooms

The Big Three American auto companies seem to have recovered their place in the automotive world, generating buzz and excitement over new and redesigned 2014 models. Chrysler, Ford and General Motors have met the challenge of foreign companies with a renewed focus on safety, design and cost.“It’s been an ongoing process,” said Mark Phelan, Tecumseh graduate and automotive critic and columnist for the Detroit Free Press. “Finally they seem to have crossed a threshold.”The 2014 models are a perfect illustration of how far American cars have traveled in design and safety.

Thanks supporters of golf outing in memory of Rich Hutchinson

Banker known for kindness, community support

Merlyn H. Downing, 85, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Hospice of Lenawee, Hospice Home. Downing was well-known in the community for his generous, giving nature and willingness to help. He started a banking career at United Savings Bank of Tecumseh in 1946, beginning as a bookkeeper, and worked his way up to Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer in 1986.

Board considers controversial ‘Common Core’ standards for TPS

The Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education declared informal support for the Common Core State Standards at Monday night’s regular meeting. Full endorsement of the standards will be taken up as an action item at a later meeting. Common Core State Standards (CCSS), a benchmark for students in general subjects such as mathematics, language skills, writing, and critical thinking that has received widespread approval nationally by educators, has become a hot-button topic in some state legislatures, Michigan’s included.

Stanley C. Woodard

Stanley C. Woodard, age 62, of Clinton passed away at home August 21, 2013. He was born November 8, 1950 in Tecumseh, the son of Laverne and Angie (Baker) Woodard. He married Karen Watne in 1971.Stanley was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Clinton American Legion Post No. 176 and attended Clinton High School. Stanley enjoyed fishing, tinkering on cars, and socializing with his friends.

Leon Patrick Jahnke “Dad,” “Pops,” “Grampy”

Leon Patrick Jahnke, fondly referred to as "Dad" “Pops,” and “Grampy” of Hartselle Alabama, and formerly of Tecumseh, Mich., passed from this life on August 10, 2013 in Hartselle Alabama at the age of 77. Leon was born in Ann Arbor Mich., on March 17, 1936 to Samuel and Gertrude (Weatherholt) Jahnke. Leon lived in Tecumseh, and worked for Chrysler for a number of years before being transferred to the plant in Huntsville Alabama in 1982, where he continued to work until his retirement in 1996.Leon truly loved going on long scenic rides, which he was able to enjoy up until his final days.

Merlyn H. Downing

Merlyn H. Downing, age 85, of Tecumseh, died on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at the Hospice of Lenawee, Hospice Home. He was born October 15, 1927, in Britton, Mich., to Harry and Vera (Grant) Downing. After his mother’s death, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Leland and Fannie Downing. On August 11, 1950, he married Myrna Beevers and she survives.Merlyn started his banking career in 1946 at United Savings Bank of Tecumseh in the bookkeeping department.

Lowell Selders

Lowell Selders died of dementia peacefully at home on August 21, 2013 with his daughter and son in law by his side under Hospice care. He was born in Tecumseh, Mich., on May 2, 1932. Lowell Selders and his father John Selders farmed not only their land on (M-52) Tecumseh, but all over the Tecumseh area. As a young boy and wanting to start a family, Lowell took his farming equipment and started digging basements and laying pipes. He kept expanding his business he got married to Marilyn Crow of Adrian in 1952.

Mildred I. Rupp

Mildred I. Rupp, age 94, of Tecumseh, passed away August 27, 2013 at Tecumseh Place II. She was born January 31, 1919 in Bryan, Ohio, the daughter of Charles and Gladys (Wolfe) Jolly. On November 8, 1937, she married Glen J. Rupp in Ft. Wayne, Ind. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1993.Mildred was a graduate of Stryker High School, Class of 1937 in Stryker, Ohio.She was employed with D & C Store in Tecumseh for 20 years. Mildred was a member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church. Mildred is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Jerry (Pat) McKeever of Tecumseh and Mrs.

Tecumseh's varsity football schedule reads like blank slate

There are no team names listed on T-shirts printed for this year’s Tecumseh varsity football coaches, players and fans with head coach Al Romano saying its not about who they play as much as the effort brought to the field on any given Friday night under the lights.“It’s not who, it’s how” is the mantra printed on the back of the T-shirts.“That’s the way we feel about it,” said Romano of the season. He readily admitted Ann Arbor Pioneer will be one of the toughest on the schedule but added, “When you play teams that have two to three times as many kids as you it’s going to be tough.

Tecumseh girls win County CC Preview

For the third straight time, Tecumseh’s girls cross country program has started the season by winning the Lenawee County Preview Championship.The Indians scored 29 points to finish first while Blissfield (39) followed 10 points behind to place second.

Project to 'shore up' Globe Mill Pond's south edge to halt erosion

Globe Mill Pond may soon be getting some shoreline repairs to address the erosion problem on its south side, parallel to the Tecumseh Community Center’s parking lot.“It’s always been eroding, but it’s getting too close to the parking lot now,” said Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch.
