Vital funding for the Tecumseh District Library (TDL) will be put before voters in an upcoming spring election as campaign organizers begin to promote a 1.35 millage request.On May 7, two separate proposals will appear on the election ballot: one for renewal of 1.15 mills and the other for an additional .2 mills, both for 10 years.The additional .2 mills will add approximately $100,000 in needed annual revenue to offset declines in the district’s tax base and increases in expenses, according to campaign chairperson Anne Walker.Walker, a longtime supporter of the library, said the millage i

Clinton man arrested for sexual assault of juvenile

On Friday, Jan. 4, Clinton police arrested Daniel Pitts, 33, on a 10-count felony warrant for First Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct involving a child under the age of 16. Pitts was arrested at his mother’s home in Dundee with assistance from the Dundee Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the Tecumseh Police Department.The child was assaulted at least 10 times between Dec. 12 and Dec. 30, 2012, according to Clinton Police Chief Michael Randolph, and the incidents were reported to the Clinton Police Department on Dec. 31.

Sandy Hook shooting prompts Tecumseh Public Schools to strengthen security

Tecumseh elementary schools just got much more secure with the installation of high-tech identification video cameras at all main entrances that allow the school secretaries to view any person requesting to come in.In response to the recent tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and an ongoing policy of concern for student security, Tecumseh Supt. Mike McAran contacted the company that the district has been using for security issues and requested a district-wide security upgrade on December 26.

AJ Smith Recreation Center to officially open Jan. 17

The new AJ Smith Recreation Center in Tecumseh, located at 810 N. Evans Street in John W. Smith Park, is scheduled to officially open on Thursday, Jan. 17 with an open house from 4 to 6 p.m.Opening festivities begin at 4 p.m. with tours and a Flag Dedication, ribbon cutting ceremony planned for 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served until 6 p.m.The Parks and Recreation staff moved from the old Tecumseh Community Center to the new facility over the holiday break and are currently open for business at the new location.

Two-point pass beats BD

Deciding to take a chance at a two-point conversion pass to win its Tri-County Conference (TCC) contest paid off for Clinton’s varsity football team at Britton on Friday, Sept. 7, with the Redskins walking away with a close 15-14 victory. A missed point after touchdown (PAT) kick may have cost the Patriots the game with both teams scoring a touchdown in the opening quarter. Clinton connected on its PAT. Britton Deerfield did not.Clinton’s Cullen Zimmerman opened scoring with a 15-yard pass from quarterback T.J. Baker in the first quarter.

Indians lose control of Jets, fall 11-10

Rain and mud factored into Tecumseh’s final regular season non-conference game at Carleton Airport on Friday, Oct. 19, but more than that was determination as the Jets rallied in the final minute to beat the Indians 11-10 with a gutsy two point conversion call.Tecumseh was leading 10-3 with only 32.5 seconds left in the contest when the Jets put up a long desperation pass on a fourth down and eight-yard situation. The pass was off target but Tecumseh was called for pass interference and the Jets set up on the Indians 20-yard line with 26.5 seconds to work with.

Patriots end season with 32-0 loss to Loyola

A sign noting “Beat those Bulldogs” hanging from Britton Deerfield sidelines made it clear from the very start of the Division 7 regional final at Bishop Foley High School on Saturday, Nov. 10, that Patriot fans wanted to end Loyola’s season.But the sign only pumped up the Bulldogs on the opposite side of the field and it was the Patriots’ season that came to an abrupt end. Tecumseh falls to Harper Creek in regional final

There weren’t a lot of mistakes made by Tecumseh’s varsity football team in the Division 3 regional final at Battle Creek Harper Creek on Friday, Nov. 9, but the ones made cost the Indians the championship and ended their season.Harper Creek connected on a three-point field goal with 5:08 left in the game and denied the Indians another point to beat Tecumseh 26-24 for the regional title.“I don’t think we played our best football game tonight,” said Tecumseh head coach Al Romano. “We had a couple turnovers and a couple of miscues here and there and a couple of critical penalties.

Rachel Waite talks about becoming a MHSAA state swimming champion

The pool water at Eastern Michigan University has settled since Rachel Waite earned a prestigious Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state swimming championship in November 2012, allowing the Tecumseh High School senior time to reflect on how she was able to accomplish what many only dream of.It is virtually impossible to look at a young child and know if they have what it takes to become a champion in any sport. Years of growth, guidance and inspiration factor into the athlete’s capabilities and whether or not they will achieve greatness.

Tecumseh girls fend off hard-charging Redskins

Tecumseh’s varsity girls basketball team defeated rival Clinton 42-25 on Friday, Jan. 4.The Indians (4-3 overall) were lead offensively by Kayla Kormos with 10 points while Madison Tedora chipped in eight points. Nicole Lipnichan picked up seven steals for the Indians while Hannah Galloway added nine.Tecumseh’s junior varsity girls basketball team (4-3) defeat Clinton 39-37 in the evening’s opening game.Albany LaGore sank five out of six free throws down the stretch to help Tecumseh earn the win.Tyfanni Bryan paced the Indian attack with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Tecumseh edged by Bluestreaks, follows with win at Manchester

After falling by two points (38-36) at Ida on Friday, Jan. 4, Tecumseh’s varsity boys basketball team travelled to Manchester on Monday, Jan. 7, and picked up an easy 74-57 win.The Indians improved to 3-3 overall with the victory over the Flying Dutchmen. The teams finished the first quarter tied 11-11 before the Indians went on a big scoring run and added 27 points in the second quarter for a 38-28 advantage at the end of the first half.

Tribe hires new coach, reinstates varsity girl’s lacrosse program

Only one season will pass without a girl’s lacrosse program at Tecumseh High School as Athletic Director Casey Randolph announced on Tuesday that the Indians have found an appropriate head coach candidate in Adrian College graduate Lindsey Day.Last season the Indians’ girls lacrosse program was cancelled due to being unable to locate a qualified coach.Day was a student teacher during the fall at Patterson Elementary and Tecumseh Middle School and was recently hired as a student assistant at the middle school.“We’re very fortunate,” said Randolph of the new hire.

Couple thanks supporters for fundraising efforts

To the Editor,From the bottom of our hearts we would like to thank the Tecumseh Middle School students and staff and especially the principal, Mr. Rick Hilderley. Thanks to all of them, we received $200 from the Activity Fund and if it hadn’t been for Mr. Hilderley it wouldn’t have happened. Ken is currently undergoing treatment for cancer and the money will be used for all those expenses that come along.We also thank our grandson, seventh grader Zachary Breeding for thinking of this project, and of course, Mr. Hilderley for carrying it forward.

Cecily Jean (Masten) Kane

Cecily Jean (Masten) Kane, age 70, of Tipton, passed away peacefully, Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the University of Michigan Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was born January 14, 1942, in Hudson, Mich., to Bernard and Virginia (Baldwin) Masten. On November 29, 1958, she married Melvin L. Kane in Rollin, Mich., and he survives. She and her husband, Melvin, first lived in Rollin and then moved to Tipton in 1967, and were lifetime residents. She was an AVON lady for 40 years.

Betty J. Flanders
