Kathryn E. Manley, 61, of Lowell, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Dec. 28, 2011.Kathryn was born Oct. 3, 1950, in Tecumseh, Mich., the second daughter of Charles and Alice (Everlove) Manley. In 1970 she graduated from the Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint where she attended from the age of four. After graduation from high school she spent most of her adult years in the Grand Rapids area working for various nonprofit organizations. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed knitting and embroidery.
Linda Kay Blumerick Nichols, 67, of Huffman, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at her residence.Services will be held at a later date. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.Linda was born April 15, 1944 in Ionia, Mich., to parents, Kenneth and Dorthy Bishop Blumerick, a former resident of Humble, and has resided in Huffman for the past 30 years. She was a graduate of Tecumseh High School, class of 1962. She attained her associate’s degree in accounting at the Davenport Business College, and she was a retired cafeteria worker for the Huffman ISD.
HERALD STAFF REPORTSigns of an economic recovery in the Tecumseh area were beginning to pick up during the latter half of 2011 with an announcement by Lenawee Stamping Corporation of an $8.3 million expansion and plans to hire up to 128 workers by 2013.

Clinton High School picked up its first-ever state championship with coach Al Roberts and his Redskins’ softball team claiming the Division 3 first place trophy in Battle Creek. The Tecumseh Indians’ varsity volleyball team surprised many by advancing all the way to the state final and finishing as this year’s Class B runners-up.
Joseph C. Gruber, age 75, passed away Friday, December 23, 2011. He was born September 5, 1936 in Tecumseh, the son of Carl and Marie (Bruns) Gruber. On February 2, 1963 he married Maxine Hertler. Sadly, she preceded him in death March 6, 1996.Joseph was a lifetime resident of the area. He worked for General Motors in Tecumseh and Toledo for many years. He was a member of St.
By DEB WUETHRICHAs of Thursday, Dec. 22, the Salvation Army was falling a little short of its goal of $120,000, the same goal that had been set for the past three years.“Last year we raised $119,600,” said Captain Gordon Knight, who leads the Salvation Army in Lenawee County. “We’re still lagging a little behind last year at this time.” Captain Knight said that bell ringers have been set up at 20 sites throughout the county, including Busch’s stores in Tecumseh and Clinton and behind Martin’s Home Center in Tecumseh.“They will continue to be out there through December 24,” Knight said.
By DEB WUETHRICHWith the help of the surrounding community, the Tecumseh Service Club was able to adopt 155 families this year through its annual Adopt-A-Family program. There were 52 families with 122 kids that were not adopted, so the Service Club provided clothes and toys for each of them. New toys from Toys for Tots collected in the community were added to the gifts, however, the Service Club also purchased a new outfit and pajamas for each child.

Tecumseh City Council authorized City Manager Kevin Welch to advertise a request for proposals for the potential reuse of the Community Center last March.

By DEB WUETHRICHAlthough Tecumseh has had a Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA) for many years, the board has not been active in recent years. The board, with some new members, was reactivated on Monday night, Dec. 19, with a 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall. The 10-member LDFA board includes: Jack Baker (appointed as Chair), Ron Wimple (absent but appointed as Vice-Chair), Gary Naugle, Mayor Dick Johnson, Jimmie Rice, Paul Bidwell, Bob Fox, David Stimpson, Kevin Packard, and Kevin Welch. The term of office for the Chair and Vice-Chair will expire Dec.
The Iron Chef Competition: Healthy Eating Edition will be held Monday, January 16 at the Adrian Public Library from 204 pm for grades 7-12. Teams will create healthy dishes using provided ingredients, including the secret ingredient. A panel of judges will determine the winner. Registration required to cook, call 265-2265. Terms of the lease include allowing the Raisin Township Police Department to relocate at the old Sutton School building at 2996 Sutton Road.
By DEB WUETHRICHDavid Hickman, Lenawee Community Foundation Board Chair, announced on Wednesday, Jan. 11, that Tecumseh will soon be getting a new community center, thanks to a $2 million pledge by the Foundation. Hickman was joined for the announcement by Mayor Richard Johnson, Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch, Director of Cultural and Leisure Services, Shelley Lim, Larry Ash, Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board and other city staff.The fund being used to support this project was originally created through the generosity of the Ruth V. and Ruth Anne Thompson Trusts.
By DEANE ERTSTecumseh School Board members will be spending a little more time in office than they had bargained for, according to a change in the state election law. The board has had the issue under review in previous meetings and at Monday night’s meeting Supt. Mike McAran briefed the trustees on a recent board policy committee meeting addressing the subject.Currently board terms are four years, but to comply with a recent state legislative mandate (House Bill No. 4005), all public school board members are required by statute to extend their terms by six, 12, or 18 months.
Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team defeated Chelsea 58-18 on Wednesday, Jan 11, and scored a forfeit win over Ann Arbor Huron, improving to 17-2, 6-0 in the SEC. Joe Rebotarro made the Division 2 Rankings for the Indians. He currently listed as No. 10 at 285 pounds, joining teammates Chase Lewis (No. 2, 112-pounds), Ronnie Bechtol (No. 8, 140-pounds), and Cole Amstutz (No. 8, 171-pounds).The Indians attended Hudson’s Super 16 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 15, and finished third with 134.5 points. The hosting Tigers won the tournament with a team score of 197.5.
A slow start at Madison had Britton Deerfield’s varsity girls basketball team playing catch-up all night against the Trojans. The Patriots wound up losing the Tri-county Conference contest 49-30.The Patriots were behind by 12 points at the end of the first quarter and never recovered. The Trojans finished the first half with a 26-12 lead. Craig Tanis said his BD girls had balanced scoring in the second and third quarters but never pulled closer than nine points of the lead.
Charles R. Lewis, age 88, of Tecumseh, passed away the evening of January 16, 2012 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility with loving family at his side. Charles was the son of Roy and Lileth (Hall) Lewis born February 3, 1923 in Seneca, Michigan. He graduated from Blissfield High School in 1940 and attended Purdue University while serving in the military.Charles served as a combat infantryman in both France and Germany in the 102nd Infantry Division during WWII.
