The Lenawee County Drain Commissioner’s office assumed operational responsibilities for Red Mill Pond Dam on Monday, December 17. The future operation of the dam had come into question after required inspections did not take place.
Michael Joseph Gruber, 55 of Gladwin, Mich., passed away on December 20, 2012 in Tecumseh, Mich., surrounded by his family. He was born May 28, 1957 in Tecumseh the son of Joseph Carl Gruber and Irene M. (Murphy) Gruber Brown. Michael married Delma Mills and was later married to Ruby Henry in August of 2006, both of whom survive. Michael worked for Ford Motor Company in Saline, Mich., as an incoming quality inspector until his retirement in 2006. Michael was a member of the Gladwin Free Methodist Church, the Harrison Moose Lodge No. 2235 and the Harrison Eagles.
Hazel Lillian Jeffrey, 93, of Traverse City passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 at Orchard Creek Assisted Living in Traverse City. Hazel was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1918 to the late John and Gladys (Schneider) Palmer in Adrian, Mich. She entered into marriage with Allen Jeffrey on Nov.
On Friday, Dec. 14, the nation experienced another tragedy. In the words of several first responders, it was the worst tragedy that they had ever witnessed. Twenty year old Adam Lanza shot and killed six adults and 20 schoolchildren between the ages of five and 10.As a nation, we grieve on several different levels. We grieve for the administrators, teachers and children that are supposed to come home at the end of each school day. We grieve with the families, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, grandparents who are now faced with the pain of their great loss.
To the Editor,Representative Tim Walberg:I’m writing to ask you to support legislation to ban assault weapons. No private citizen needs an assault weapon.Christmas reminds us that Jesus came to show us the way, to be an example of how to live. I can’t picture Jesus with an assault weapon, can you? Jesus didn’t come to earth with weapons to rid the world of evil. He came to transform through love, service, and sacrifice.Banning assault weapons, I realize, is only part of the solution to ending the violence that is so pervasive in our society.

Ruby M. “Peggy” Lister, age 85 of Tecumseh, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 under the loving care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born April 2, 1927 in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of William Viers and Myra Conroy. On May 25, 1947 she married James John Lister II who sadly preceded her in death on August 1, 2001.Peggy attended Ridgeway Nazarene Church and had formerly attended Clinton Church of Christ. She enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, singing, playing the guitar and the piano. She also enjoyed going to the casino and was an avid Bingo player.
Wayne J. Weaver, 68, 2805 Appletree Lane, South Bend, IN 46615 (formerly of Tecumseh) passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka. He was born June 1, 1944 in Goshen to Paul F. and Nina V. Weaver. His family moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula when he was seven years old and he graduated from Manistique High School in 1962. Following his 1965 graduation from Hesston College in Kansas where he received an A.A.
William Orville Bishop, age 67 of Grayling, passed away December 16, 2012. Loving father of Laura (Arthur) Makarewicz and William Bishop. Stepfather of Kelly (Kyle) McCashen and Kristy (Mike) Feldcamp. Cherished grandfather of Miles, Marlow, Taleah, Grayden, Emma, Chloe, Keegan, Micah, Caleb, Sophia and Oliver. Brother of Gus (Shirley) Bishop, Mary (Brian) Roy and the late Betty Bishop. The funeral service is Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Potere-Modetz Funeral Home, 339 Walnut Blvd, Rochester.The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, from 5-9 p.m.
Rogina Chase, age 75 of Tecumseh, passed away surrounded by her family Saturday, December 15, 2012. She was born November 8, 1937 in Morenci, Michigan, the daughter of Cosper R. and Edith (Colegrove) Powell. On December 22, 1962 she married William E. Chase, sadly he preceded her in death. Rogina is survived by her daughter, Gloria (Mark) Kirk of Adrian; and grandchildren, Rachel L. and Benjamin C. Kirk.Rogina enjoyed quilting & sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and was an excellent baker, especially when it came to cookies & pumpkin rolls.
Anne D. Williamson, 87, of Tecumseh died Dec. 19 at Cambrian Assisted Living. She was born in Lynn, Massachusetts on May 1, 1925 to Alfred and Madeline Meanor. She lived in Detroit most of her life. The third of four daughters, Anne was preceded in death by sisters Madeline and Mary.She married Wayne Williamson on Sept. 18, 1965, and he preceded her in death in November 2005.
Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Mike McAran addressed school security as a priority item at Monday night’s regular school board meeting. He said that he had met earlier in the day with legislators, the police, and emergency responders to review existing security procedures. The topic is at the forefront of concerns for all school officials in the wake of the tragedy that occurred in the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last Friday, Dec. 14.“We put together the first security policy book when Supt. [Richard] Fauble was in charge in 2001,” McAran told the board.
After going into its non-conference varsity boys basketball game against undefeated Clinton (0-6) Tuesday, Dec. 18, with an overall record of 0-2, Tecumseh’s Indians had a disappointing outing and added another check mark to their loss column.
The Tecumseh School Board unanimously approved the first revision to the 2012-2013 budget at Monday night’s regular meeting. Previous to the vote, Director of Business Services Judy Pfund had prepared a budget overview for the trustees that reported revenue in the general fund that is projected to be $23,286,717, reflecting an increase in revenues that were expected when the current fiscal year began on July 1. The recent independent audit had reported general fund revenues of $22,808,178 for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.
City residents will be paying slightly more for water/sewer services effective January 1 following Tecumseh City Council approval to raise rates at its Monday, Jan. 17 meeting. Water rates will go up 29 cents per 1,000 gallons of water, from the current $1.46 per 1,000 gallons, to $1.75 per 1,000 gallons. Wastewater rates will rise by 68 cents per 1,000 gallons, from the present $3.41 to $4.09 per 1,000 gallons.Rates also will be going up for sewer only customers, with single-family units increased from $48.33 per quarter to $54.19.

Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team travelled to Holland on Saturday, Dec. 15, for the Holland Team Tournament and went 2-2 for the day.Tecumseh opened with a 70-9 win against Rockford, then lost 44-29 to Division 1’s Clarkston. The Indians came back strong for a 39-29 win over Greenville in a re-match of last year’s State Quarterfinals and lost their final dual 48-28 to Division 1’s Rochester. Anthony Lesko (145) and Joe Rebotarro (285) remained undefeated this season with 4-0 records. Luke Liuzzi (125), Cole Amstutz (171), and Preston Pelham (215) went 3-1 at the event.
Large numbers of Tecumseh varsity bowlers made it plain to see that the Indians take their bowling program seriously as relatively small squads from visiting Ann Arbor Pioneer were greatly outnumbered and outmatched at Ten Pin Alley on Monday, Dec. 17.The Indians’ girls remained undefeated on the season, giving up only a half of a point to the Pioneers while totaling 29.5 points for another Southeast Conference victory.Savanna Murry turned in a strong overall performance for Tecumseh with high games of 220 and 200 for a 420 series while Lauren McKowen had a game-high 207.
