Lack of dentist for Pediatric dental care a hardship on county families

To the Editor,The Health Services Advisory Committee from Adrian Head Start would like to appeal to our local dental community to come together for a common purpose — local access to Pediatric dental care for children under five years old.In our community there is no pediatric dentist and this creates an unnecessary hardship on families.In our work with Head Start, we have learned that, although many of our local dentists will see young children, a significant portion refers to Jackson, Ann Arbor or Toledo for more specialized care.

Drought worsens, Lenawee County at ‘severe drought’ level

It’s been a long hot summer for residents in Lenawee County. The lack of rain added to the oppressive temperatures is starting to affect plant life in a variety of ways.According to droughtmonitor.unl.edu, Lenawee County is one of 25 counties in Michigan with a “severe drought” designation, while four counties west of Lenawee, including Hillsdale County, have “extreme drought” designations. Lina M. Rodriguez Salamanca, a vegetable educator for Michigan State University (MSU), covers a territory that includes Lenawee County as well as several other southern Michigan counties.

Lenawee Fire Departments issue burning ban

Extremely dry conditions led Lenawee County fire departments on Thursday to issue burning bans until further notice.President of the county firemen’s association and fire chief for Raisin Township, Richard Renard, said the ban includes any type of open burning, including campfires and barrels.Several field fires have already taken place and a garage in Adrian caught fire recently after a resident was burning brush.For more information, call your local fire department.

Council approves closing alley

At the Monday, July 16, meeting of the Tecumseh City Council, approval was granted for the closure of the alley alongside Muk’s Sports Pub.The unanimous vote followed the recommendation from City Manager Kevin Welch.No comments were made on the proposal at a public hearing, however, a letter opposing the action was received from Guy Mawaring, chairman of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA).Manwaring stated said the alley was “not conducive to foot traffic,” and that closing it would not reduce the city’s liability of future accidents.

Frederick M. Bryan

Frederick M. Bryan, age 95 of Orlando, Fla., passed away in his sleep on Friday, June 15, 2012, under the care of his daughter Ruth Ann Mitchell and Vitas Hospice of Orlando. He was born July 22, 1916, in Tecumseh Mich., the son of Floyd and Phoebe Bryan. He married Helen Ruth Hammond in July of 1938; they were married for 63 years. Sadly, she preceded him in death in November 2001.Fred was a graduate of Tecumseh High School, class of 1935. He was on the Britton Fire Department from 1950-1993, some 40-plus years. He worked at the Tecumseh Products for 45-years (1936-1981).

Worries doused on new laws regarding fireworks

With a new state law that made sale, use and possession of consumer fireworks legal this year, one might have expected that citizen complaints to the police department would have been up this year. That didn’t happen in Tecumseh, however.“We really didn’t get the complaints,” said Tecumseh Police Chief Troy Stern. “We figured the new law might generate a few more complaints than what we normally had, but it didn’t.

Kelly Carter Scholarship Run has sun, lots of fun

The 18th Annual Kelly Carter Scholarship Run/Walk was held on Saturday, July 14, and was one of the most successful events ever with many local and regional athletes participating, according to run coordinator Chris Warner.The Tecumseh Police Department was on hand and made sure the runners had a safe course, which allowed the overall 10K winner Tom Romanowski to clock in with a respectable time of 36.54.Romanowski was a 40-44 age men’s division runner.Trina Romanowski (35-39) was the overall woman’s 10K winner with a time of 47.26.Samual Skeels (30-34) was the overall 5K men’s winner with

BROOKLYN — Qualifying for he NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway has been moved to Friday, August 17.Gatorade Pole Day is set for Aug. 17, a switch from previously published Saturday, Aug. 18. In addition to NASCAR Sprint Cup qualifying at 4:10 p.m., the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Sprint Cup Series will practice that day.In June, Marcos Ambrose set a track qualifying record with a blazing speed of 203.241 mph for the Quicken Loans 400. The speed was the 11th fastest pole-winning speed in NASCAR history.

Kathleen A. Hamilton

Kathleen A. Hamilton, age 55 of Clinton, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Bixby Medical Center, Adrian, with her family at her side. She was born on October 29, 1956 in Wyandotte, Mich., the daughter of Bernard F. Koester and Dollie (Howell) Koester. On June 17, 1974 she married Timothy Hamilton, who survives.Kathy was a homemaker who enjoyed, basket weaving and was past president of the Clinton High School Band Boosters. She also enjoyed arts, crafts, traveling and especially going on cruises with her husband, Tim.

James Merrill

James Merrill age 79, of Clinton, died unexpectedly Monday June 16, 2012. He was born May 10, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Gerald and Arlee (Wise) Merrill. In July 1966 he married Julia Wagner in Mt. Clemens and she preceded him in death on December 17, 1989.James loved collecting things, he was an avid collector of guns, knives, and cars; in his younger days he enjoyed built dragsters.

Marijuana worries neighbors in Tecumseh Township subdivision

Looking out from his second floor window into his neighbor’s yard, Tecumseh Township resident Tom Hodgman is able to count approximately 50 large marijuana plants growing openly outside, as a German Shepherd guard dog patrols the grounds.Hodgman’s neighbor’s property is surrounded by a wooden fence, approximately six foot tall, that conceals the large growing operation but Hodgman said he is still concerned for his family’s safety.

Bystander saves toddler found under water at Pit

Quick action by a stranger at Tecumseh Park, otherwise known as ‘The Pit,’ helped save the life of a one and a half year old boy on Tuesday afternoon, July 17.Lenawee County Ambulance, together with Tecumseh police and fire department members, responded to an emergency call at 5:50 p.m. for a possible drowning.Before they arrived, the infant had been pulled from the water by a bystander, who yelled for help. Police Chief Troy Stern said that the child was reported to be awake and breathing on his own as medical staff attended to him. As of 8:30 p.m.

Group prioritizes plan to address substance abuse

A newly formed group now known as the Tecumseh Coalition for Youth (TCY) held its second meeting on Friday, July 13, at Evans Street Station. A cross-section of the community is represented at the coalition, including city and school officials, law enforcement, youths and other segments.Mayor Richard Johnson chaired this month’s meeting, and April Demers, Coalition Development Coordinator for substance abuse prevention, has been facilitating the meetings.
