Season concludes for Music in the Park concert series

To the Editor,Another great Music in the Park summer concert series has come to a close in Tecumseh. Adams Park was filled with people on the third Thursday evening of June, July, August, and September.Folks brought lawn chairs, picnic baskets as they joined friends, family and neighbors for an evening of great music. I would like to thank United Bank and Trust for sponsoring the Music in the Park concert series. Because of their financial sponsorship, we are able to hire the musicians and offer free concerts for everyone to enjoy.

Fan Club thanks supporters for ‘Night Under the Lights’

To the Editor,The Tecumseh Indian Fan Club held their third annual Tecumseh Indian’s “Night Under the Lights” youth football clinic on Monday, Sept. 23. The Fan Club would like to give a special thanks to Brownies House of Pizza and Cheryl and Craig Brown for their generous donation of pizzas. Thanks to Jim Harvey for announcing the event and Coach Al Romano, the THS football coaching staff and the varsity football players for their help in making the evening enjoyable and successful. Finally, thanks to the 54 future Indian football players and their families who participated in the event.

Area businesses support CISTA’s hygiene education program

To the Editor,Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA) provides programs that support specific needs of students within Tecumseh Public Schools.In September, Tecumseh Acres third and fourth grade students heard about physical and oral hygiene practices: proper hand washing, oral hygiene, and the importance of regular bathing and wearing clean clothes. Special thanks to area businesses that donated hygiene items for the students to take home and use: Dr. Ronny Hourani, Dr. Scott M. Doman, Great Lakes Family Dental Group, and Walgreens of Tecumseh.

Indians beat Ypsilanti 14-0 during homecoming

Tecumseh High School’s varsity football team defeated visiting Ypsilanti 14-0 during homecoming on Friday, Sept. 27. The defensive contest remained scoreless throughout the first two quarters. The Indians’ offense scored a touchdown with Nick Cowen passing to Patrick Beguhn and scored again midway through the final quarter with Mitchell Meger hitting the end zone. Tecumseh’s Ben Vannatter connected on both point after touchdown kicks for the final score.The Indians improved their season record to 3-2 overall with the victory. TPS adds AD duties to assistant middle school principal position

By unanimous decision, Tecumseh Public School Board approved adding the duties of Athletic Director to the Tecumseh Middle School Assistant Principal position of Greg Lewis on Monday.Normally, the board does not approve the filling of the position, according to board president Ed Tritt.“This is kind of a different situation because it is a shared position and it makes a little bit of a difference,” he said.In speaking to the board, Supt.

Indians even season football record with 14-13 loss to Lincoln

Lining up just outside of the end zone with just 14 seconds remaining in its Friday, Sept. 20, varsity football game Tecumseh’s varsity football team was stopped cold by visiting Lincoln on the one yard line and the Indians lost 14-13. The Indians attempted to get off one more play as senior quarterback Nick Cowen spiked the football to stop the clock, however the referee called the game complete saying the final second had already ticked off.

Plan gives Tecumseh Public Schools 'focus' and a 'clear direction' - top goals announced

Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Kelly Coffin unveiled 10 goal statements for 2013-14 as part of the district’s new strategic plan, which was approved Monday night, Sept. 23. Dr. Emmett Lippe facilitated sessions in August involving school personnel, business leaders and other members of the community.“When you talk about strategic planning, people question ‘why are you doing this?’” said Coffin. “It really offers our organization focus and a clear direction.

Tecumseh homecoming is Friday

Tecumseh High School’s 2013 Homecoming Court was recently announced. Tecumseh Homecoming is Friday, Sept. 27, when the Indians take on the Ypsilanti Community Grizzlies. Community donates food for United Way Day of Action

Community members came through for a successful food drive coordinated by the city of Tecumseh and others on Friday, Sept. 20. The event, which featured a drive-through donation process at the Tecumseh Fire Dept. Building, was part of Lenawee United Way’s Day of Action.

Teachers to receive pay raise under new contract approved by TPS board

The Tecumseh Board of Education approved ratification of the TEA (Tecumseh Education Association) contract on its meeting on Sept. 23.Tecumseh Supt. Kelly Coffin said the one-year contract included no percentage raises. She said all teachers were given a step increase on schedule, which means they will receive a salary increase when they move up a step on the base salary scale. Teachers will also receive payment for higher education credits, noted Coffin. Those teachers who are not eligible for a step during the coming school year were to receive $1,300 off schedule.

Healthcare responsibilities on the horizon for employers

American employers are working with a looming Affordable Care Act (ACA) deadline and may not even know it. Small business owners who employ 50 or fewer employees must provide current employees with information about the Health Insurance Marketplace by Oct. 1, 2013, and after that date new employees must be given the same information.Employees must be told they can lose the employer portion of their health benefits if a plan is purchased through the new marketplace.

Resident enjoys stories, photography, ads in local magazine

To the Editor,What a treat when I opened my mailbox a few days ago to discover my fall issue of Homefront! The photography and stories are so wonderful... always reminds me, once again, to appreciate living in this great community! Especially liked the story on the Ford schools... very well done! And who would have ever thought to do a story about “chairs...” fun. Always wondered about the paintings in our local McDonalds... you answered my questions! Even the ads are fun and creative... even take time to look at each and every one of them!

Manager thanks sponsors, volunteers for car/bike show support

To the Editor,Thank you to all of the sponsors of the 2013 Tecumseh Classic Car and Bike Show. Without their financial support the event would be impossible to maintain. This year we had well over 600 cars attend the five different shows throughout the summer. The events were fun for the car owners and other enthusiasts. A special thank you to ididit, United Bank & Trust, Avery Oil, Basil Boys, Muk’s Sports Pub and Embers Bar & Grill for their continued support.The events could also not run as smoothly if it were not for the numerous volunteers that help with each event.

Ellen R. Johnson

Ellen R. Johnson, age 85 of Tecumseh, passed away September 21, 2013.Ellen was born January 2, 1928 in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of George and Mildred (Auten) Burkett. On March 8, 1946 she married Richard W. Johnson and he preceded her in death. Ellen worked for H. W. Tuttle for many years.

Charles Leo Earhart

Charles Leo Earhart, age 76, of Tecumseh, passed away on September 20, 2013. He was born on August 18, 1937, in Manchester, Mich., to the late Leo and Julia (Maples) Earhart.On September 11, 2013, Charles married Rose Winters and she survives him.A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at the Tecumseh Church of Christ, 312 W. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh, Mich.

John Cedric Nelson

John Cedric Nelson, 82, of Adrian, Mich., passed away in his sleep on the morning of September 22, 2013, at the Kresge Rehabilitation Center in Chelsea, Michigan. John had been fighting various issues that stemmed mostly from Diabetes and neuropathy, and wounds that had difficulty healing due to these conditions. He was the beloved husband of Marlene Nelson for almost sixty years.John was born in Detroit, Mich., on April 24, 1931. He left high school as a young boy to join the Air Force, where he served in various locations throughout his term.

William J. Steele

William J. Steele, age 84, of Tecumseh, passed away September 21, 2013.William married Georgianna “Jo” Steele March 12, 1949 and she preceded him in death June 11, 2013.He was a lifetime member of the Tecumseh American Legion.William is survived by his children, Rickard (Elizabeth) Steele of Santa Fe, Texas and Kathy (Steven) Roesch of Onsted; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.In addition to his wife, Georgianna, he was preceded in death by a son, James.At his request cremation has taken place.

Ricky LaVon Hand

Ricky LaVon Hand, age 56, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was born March 1, 1957, in Adrian, to Jerry and Sharon Kay (Faust) Hand. He served in the US Navy. Ricky was a Resident Supervisor at the Theta Kai Fraternity at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Blissfield.
