Junk to Funk focuses on interactive, wearable art with photo

Last year when a team of individuals brainstormed for a new fundraising activity to benefit the Tecumseh Center for the Arts (TCA), a little event known as “Junk to Funk” was born. The program featured an eco-friendly fashion show as models combined wearability, art and use of recycled materials.

Thanks school district voters for support of pool millage

To the Editor,One year ago February 28th, the Tecumseh Community School District voters graciously supported the Tecumseh Community Memorial Pool in passing a millage to support ongoing operations.Relationships with the Tecumseh Public School Administration, Board of Education, Friends of Tecumseh Community Pool 501(c)3 and community members have grown. This has resulted in an example of a community coming together for a great cause. Over the past year, programs at the pool have done much more than continue, they have grown with new programs and members.

Tecumseh girls win regional championship, Indians qualify six for individual state finals

Another in a long string of first place finishes at team regionals was picked up by Tecumseh’s varsity girls bowling team on Friday, Feb. 21 at Taylor Lanes. The Indians boys team closed its season with a fourth place regional finish.The Indians’ girls team advance five bowlers, including the regional champion, Jordan Richard, while the boys will send regional champion Cody Wilkins.As a team, Tecumseh girls stormed to the top with a whopping score of 3711 while the runners-up, John F. Kennedy, tallied a score of 3491.

Clinton wins, gains piece of TCC title

Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team won twice last week to catch up with league-leading Madison and earn a share of the Tri-County Conference (TCC) title.The Redskins defeated Sand Creek 42-31 on Tuesday, Feb. 19, and acquired a piece of the TCC championship at home on Friday, Feb. 22 with a 51-46 win over the Trojans in front of a packed house. Clinton (17-2 overall, 12-2 TCC) won its third TCC title since joining the conference six years ago, and has won it three out of the last four years.“What a season,” said Clinton head coach Mike Ruhl.

Indians fall to Niles in state quarterfinal

Winning the first three of four matches at the Division II state quarterfinals in Battle Creek on Friday, Feb. 22, had Tecumseh’s varsity wresting team looking like it may advance to the state semifinals. However, No. 3 ranked Niles came from behind and put an end to the No. 6 ranked Indians’ season (30-13 overall) with a 36-26 final.St. John’s, the No. 1 ranked team in the tournament, defeated No. 2 ranked Lowell 42-20 for the state championship.

Helen Marie Kuehn

Helen Marie Kuehn, age 91 of Tecumseh, passed away February 24, 2013 at Cambrian Assisted Living, under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born March 7, 1921 in Blue River, Wis., to Van and Marie (Pipal) Pipal. In 1942 she married Howard Kuehn. He preceded her in death in August 2000, after 58 years of marriage.

Carl D. Kennel

Carl David Kennel, 90, of Tecumseh, passed away Feb. 21, 2013. He was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Kenton, Ohio, the son of Ernest and Eva Kennel. On September 2, 1944, he married Patricia Osburn.Carl served in the Navy during World War II. He completed his tool and die apprenticeship with Ford Motor Company and most of his working years were spent at Tecumseh Products. Carl was a talented woodworker and carver. He enjoyed playing cards as well as traveling extensively with his family.

Karl John Hamilton

On Sunday, February 24, 2013, Karl John Hamilton, 48, left the bonds of his earthly body and joined the angels. He died at University Hospital in Ann Arbor surrounded by family.Karl was born Oct. 22, 1964 in Tecumseh to Wm. Dean and Jo Ann “Susie” (Kampmueller) Hamilton. He was a 1983 graduate of Tecumseh High School and a 1988 Adrian College graduate. He was a sales representative at Adrian Steel until he was incapacitated by malignant nerve sheath sarcoma in 2008.

Iris Vivian “Bib” Fletcher

Iris Vivian “Bib” Fletcher, of Ypsilanti, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Medilodge in Plymouth. She was 90 years old. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, at the Nie Family Funeral Home, Carpenter Road Chapel, 2400 Carpenter Road, Ann Arbor. Interment will be in Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock. Recession, tough times linked to national rise in suicides

Anyone with access to an emergency scanner can attest to the fact that police and rescue personnel periodically respond to attempted suicide calls, though listeners rarely learn whether the attempts result in death. Statistics, mostly kept by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), show that suicide rates do go up during times of recession, with the largest numbers recorded during the Great Depression.

Clinton furniture business opens at main four corners

Nanette Holt started painting furniture years ago when her children were small as a way to save money and add a creative touch to her home. What started as a money-saving hobby has now turned into a new career for Holt, who has her romantic country cottage furniture for sale at Floral Fantasy in the heart of Clinton.“I’ve been doing this for years for me,” said Holt. She decided to sell her work after retiring from Allegiance Hospital in Jackson just a few months ago.

Individuals need to be on guard to protect assets, credit score

To the Editor,Whatever happened to Integrity? Lately I have had several reasons to protest charges to my credit card accounts. Several times I have had to cancel a card and ask for a new card to be issued. I am presently a victim of identity theft for someone who filed an income tax return for 2012 in my name; I haven’t even sent mine in yet! My auto insurance is threatening to cancel my coverage because of an incident on a deserted and dark two-lane highway last summer. We heard a thump but since it did not seem to affect the operation of the vehicle, we continued traveling.

Bobby Jurasek

Bobby Jurasek, 71, of Tecumseh, passed away on February 21, 2013. He was born November 19, 1941 in Blissfield, Mich., the son of Martin and Frances (Tomecek) Jurasek. On November 29, 1969 Bobby married Jane Mobley and she survives.He holds the records for the 100-yard dash, 10 seconds, on a dirt track (tied), record for the most rushing yards and touchdowns in a single season at Clinton High school. He also played college football in Fargo, N.D. Bobby worked for 31 years for Ford Motor Company in Saline, retiring in 1993.

City issues Stop Work Order of building demolition at former Products location

People driving around the former Tecumseh Products manufacturing facility still can’t help but keep an eye on this little piece of town history and wonder what’s happening there — especially with visible machinery, dumpsters and a hole in a wall on the former loading dock area at the south end.Tecumseh Food Machinery and Engineering LLC purchased the building a year ago on February 3, 2012, and new owner Dave Roberts expressed the hope then of attracting a new bakery-related business, but said the structure had to be cleaned up first.

Tecumseh Public School board selects Kelly Coffin for superintendent

It took two votes at Wednesday night’s special meeting of the Tecumseh School Board, but in the end Dr. Kelly Coffin was offered the position of superintendent of schools over the other two primary candidates, Dr. Mike Osborne, superintendent of the Morenci/Hudson School District; and Sean McNatt, superintendent of the Breckenridge School District.The board has been in the process of selecting a replacement for retiring Supt. Mike McAran whose final day in office will be June 30.The school trustees were deadlocked in the first vote 3-3.
