This feat belongs to bristlecone pines, which are conifers. What is the world’s largest tree? The giant sequoia or giant redwood, by either name, is also a conifer. There is more to conifers than just the triangle-shaped pine trees most familiar to the untrained eye. Cypress, rhododendron, larch and redwood are members of this diverse family, with foliage that changes color and drops in the fall.

Romano lights fire in pre-season

By MICKEY ALVARADOOne small spark is all it takes to light an enormous new fire but when the flames eventually die down and the embers grow dim it takes significant effort to get it roaring again.Tecumseh varsity football coach Al Romano has added new kindling to an old Indian bonfire and poked it until seeing sparks rise from the heat. His leaders have basically been forged in the pre-season workouts and appear ready to represent Tecumseh on the gridiron like the days of old when every game was do or die.

Tecumseh High School’s sideline cheerleading team has scheduled its Cheer and Little Cheer Camps and will be highlighting participants in an annual pre-game football show before the Indians varsity team plays visiting Ann Arbor Huron on Friday, Sept.

Margie J. McKenna

Margie J. McKenna, 87, of Tecumseh, passed away on August 12, 2012, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. She was born in Elwood City, Pa., the daughter of Robert and Mable (Wiley) Lutz. She married Paul E. McKenna on December 22, 1943 who preceded her in death on Jan 18, 2005 following 61 years of marriage and lifelong ministry together.Margie served as a social worker for the Lenawee Intermediate School District for 22 years focusing on the needs of handicapped children and their families.

Sharon S. Sauter

Sharon S. Sauter, 65, of Tecumseh, passed away at ProMedica Bixby Hospital on August 10, 2012 with her loving husband at her side. She was born August 31, 1946 in Tecumseh, the daughter of Henry and Rita (Piotter) Korth. On May 21, 1992 she was united in marriage with Michael Sauter and he survives.Sharon was employed at NSK, Anspec, and Whatman in Ann Arbor as a Customer Service Representative for over 20 years, until retiring on June 14, 2012. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, flower gardening, their northern cabin and spending time with her family and friends.

Joseph Vincent Weigle

Joseph Vincent Weigle, 91, of Shelton, Conn., died peacefully on July 25, with his loving family at his side. Joe was born in Jersey City, N. J., on May 26, 1921 to Henry and Rose (McHugh) Weigle. He graduated from Dumont High School and the Newark College of Engineering with a degree as an electrical engineer.During World War II, he served as captain in the US Army Air Corps and later, as major in the Air Force reserve.In 1966 he moved to Tecumseh, Mich., where he worked for Tecumseh Products until his retirement in 1988.

Tecumseh man dies in Raisin Twp. accident on Occidental Highway

Lee Marsh, 72, of Tecumseh, lost his life in an accident in Raisin Township on Tuesday, April 10. The Raisin Township Police Department is investigating the single vehicle traffic crash that occurred on Occidental Hwy. near Kellen Drive at 4:15 p.m.Witnesses reported that a vehicle driven by Marsh was traveling Southbound on Occidental Hwy. when he crossed the center line and struck several trees, rolling the vehicle at least once.

Tecumseh’s new community center taking shape

Tecumseh’s new AJ Smith Recreation Center is quickly taking shape and is on schedule for completion by the end of 2012 or early 2013, according to Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welsh. “Everything is going as planned,” Welsh said of the 2.3 million project. “We’re right on schedule.”Department of Public Works crews and developer Krieghoff-Lenawee have foundation blocks set and sewer/water lines installed as well as metal frames for two multi-use activity buildings, attached to the main entrance building.

Football season: Day 1

Sweat rolled from the foreheads of athletes at Tecumseh High School on Monday, Aug. 6, as the Indians held their first practice of the 2012-2013 season.The varsity players took over Indian Stadium from the junior varsity team at 6 p.m. after starting out their workouts with weight lifting. Tecumseh varsity coach Al Romano said he had 12 sets of five-minute workout sessions split with a break to ensure no problems with dehydration.

Berryman nudges Schmidt out of bid to face Jenkins for 57th district race

Tecumseh pharmacist and former mayor Harvey Schmidt had the support of many Tecumseh voters in his bid to face Nancy Jenkins as 57th District State Representative this November, but he was nudged out by Jim Berryman of Adrian. Schmidt received 528 votes to Berryman’s 162 in Tecumseh during the Democratic Primary on Tuesday, Aug. 7. Berryman received 53.11 percent of the vote and Schmidt received 46.75 percent in the primary countywide.Several candidates ran unopposed in the primary election, while others were running for the opportunity to oppose candidates in another party this fall.
