Chet Godzina

Chet Godzina, age 90, of Tecumseh, died September 19, 2013 at Cambrian Assisted Living, Tecumseh, Mich. He was born October 4, 1922, in Detroit, the youngest of ten children of John and Florence Godzina. Chet was a graduate of Milan High School and a U. S. Navy veteran of WW II. He was a tool and die maker and farmer. He worked for much of his career at Uniloy in Saline. He loved all kinds of competition including playing card games, golf and shuffleboard. Spending winters in Florida and driving his Mustang convertible were also joys of his.

Music festival to benefit CAT

Music will fill the air Saturday, Sept. 21, as the Tecumseh Music Fest kicks off at Hantz Golf Club located at 5200 Milwaukee Road.From blues to jazz and soul to rock and roll, four bands are scheduled to perform outdoors in a fundraising benefit for Community Arts of Tecumseh (CAT).Tickets to the event are on sale and will be available at the door.

City receives EPA grant to aid proposed Salsaria's cleanup

City officials recently received word that the Downriver Area Brownfield Consortium authorized $20,000 from their Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant for assessment work to be conducted for the proposed Salsaria’s restaurant site in downtown Tecumseh. In May, Salsaria’s owner Valerie Robichaud began exploring possible expansion in Tecumseh and Tecumseh City Council members adopted a resolution allowing Salsaria’s LLC to apply for a new Class C liquor license for 146 E. Chicago Blvd., the current home of The Ivy Gallery.

New health care laws lead city to make budget amendments

Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch asked for city council approval on Monday, Sept. 16, to set aside funds in each department to help cover reinsurance fees that will be coming in January of 2014. In his city manager’s report on September 3, Welch informed council members that city officials had met with Blue Cross and Blue Shield regarding the potential impact of health care reform, noting that on January 1, 2014, employers would be required to pay a reinsurance fee for each person insured on the city’s policy.

Tecumseh football coach Al Romano is Lions’ Coach of the Week

DETROIT — The Detroit Lions have named Al Romano of Tecumseh High School the week-two recipient of the 2013 High School Football Coach of the Week Program.“I’m blessed here,” Romano said. “I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be here, certainly. I’m very thankful that God has put me here and thankful for the support of my wife, our coaches, our players and our whole community. It’s not about me. It’s a team and community award. I just happen to be the head coach.”Romano led his Indians to a 28-22 victory over Redford Thurston on September 6 to claim their second victory of the season.

Julia Ann “Julie” Boyce

Julia Ann “Julie” Boyce, age 73, of Springfield, Mo., passed away September 15, 2013 under hospice care in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was born into a pioneer Tecumseh, Mich., farm family to C. Wilbur and E. Elizabeth (Kidman) Boyce on April 19, 1940. She attended one-room Culbertson School and graduated as valedictorian from Tecumseh High School in 1958. She earned Phi Beta Kappa status at Ohio Wesleyan University where she received a BA degree in Psychology. Her Master of Social Work degree was awarded at the University of Pittsburg.

Elnora M. “Tiny” Reese

Elnora M. “Tiny” Reese, age 88 of Britton, passed away at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013. She was born May 16, 1925 in Tecumseh, the daughter of George and Mamie (Biggins) Poley. She married Dale Reese on September 14, 1946. Sadly he preceded her in death on January 1, 1985.Elnora liked to travel and loved watching her “soaps.” She loved to read and liked to write and make notes for everyone. She enjoyed baking cookies, pies, and preparing big dinners for her family. She loved taking care of her family, especially her son Terry.

Isadore M. Koffron

Isadore M. Koffron, age 102, of Tecumseh, passed away September 15, 2013.Isadore was born March 3, 1911 in Leslie, MI the daughter of James and Lena (Pond) Hill. When she was 8 years old, she moved to Jackson, MI where she finished her education.On July 26, 1930, she married Winthrop N. Winfield. They had two daughters, Diane J. and Carole S. Winfield. Winthrop passed away on March 20, 1965 after a bout with cancer. On June 12, 1971, she married Robert J. Koffron. After they both retired, they traveled and spent their winters in Florida. In 1987 they moved there permanently.

Thomas P. Golema

After battling kidney cancer for 17 months, Thomas P. Golema, 39, of Jasper passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at his home.He was born June 11, 1974, in Ann Arbor, Mich., the son of Thomas and Cynthia (Christner) Golema. He graduated from Britton High School with the Class of 1993. From 1994 – 1997, Thomas served in the United States Navy working on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti.On December 4, 2004, Thomas married Lisa Killion in Defiance, Ohio, and she survives.Tom worked at the Saline plant for Ford Motor Company since 1999.He was a devoted husband and father.

Jessena (Jessie) Lynch

Jessena (Jessie) Lynch, age 75, of Tecumseh, passed away September 12, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. Jessie was born July 22, 1938 in Grand Haven, Mich., the daughter of Cottrell and Sena Reed. Her family moved to Gaylord, Mich., in 1946 where she graduated from Gaylord High School in 1956. In 1958 she married John (Jack) Lynch in a Catholic ceremony and they lived in the Gaylord area with their three children until 1966. From there they moved to Paw Paw, Mich., until moving to Tecumseh in 1970.

John J. Sell, Jr.

John J. Sell, Jr., age 78 of Clinton passed away Thursday, September 12, 2013. He was born September 7, 1935 in Ann Arbor the son of John and Marguerite (Bower) Sell. He married Kathleen Kehoe on October 20, 1956 in Clinton and she survives.John was a true family man and was known around town as someone who could make friends with everyone. He was the backbone for his family and his community. John was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He worked for American Airlines for 35 years before retiring. He was an active member of St.

Jacqueline Kay Hubbard

Jacqueline Kay Hubbard, 51, passed away Saturday at her Summerfield, Fla., home surrounded by her family.Born to Jim and Judy Fielder, Oct. 11, 1961, Jackie was raised by her father and grandparents Ruth and Wallace Whiting in Tecumseh, Mich., after the loss of her mother at age five. She met her soul mate, Tom Hubbard, at Onsted High School, where they graduated in 1979. They married in 1980 at St. Joseph Shrine and made their home in Summerfield in 1981. Tom and Jackie ran several businesses together throughout their marriage: Honey Packaging, Hubbard’s Driving Range, and TJ Hubbard Co.

Turnovers costly for Indians

Five turnovers proved costly for Tecumseh’s varsity football team at Ann Arbor Pioneer on Thursday, Sept. 12, beginning with the opening kick-off.The Pioneers took advantage of a fumble by Tecumseh on the opening kick off and put seven points on the board in the first 46 seconds of play. Ann Arbor Pioneer handed the Indians their first loss by outscoring them 35-20.“I feel terrible about how we came out,’ said Tecumseh head coach Al Romano.

Clinton dominates visiting Whiteford

A 33-8 victory against visiting Whiteford on Friday, Sept. 13, has Clinton’s varsity football team carrying a perfect 3-0 overall and 1-0 record in the Tri-County Conference.Clinton took a 26-0 lead into the final quarter before the Bobcats were able to cross into the end zone for their only touchdown of the contest with 11:55 remaining in the game.Clinton’s Mathew Sexton opened scoring with a 64-yard TD pass from TJ Baker and a good point after touchdown (PAT) kick by Gannon Nelson in the opening quarter.

A long good life for Jennie Schober

One of Tecumseh’s most senior residents, Jennie Schober, passed away earlier this week, on Saturday, Sept. 7. Jennie celebrated her 108th birthday on July 18 this year, having been born in Macon Township in 1905. She was a 1924 graduate of Tecumseh High School. For the past several years, Jennie resided at Tecumseh Place and has been one of its most senior residents.“Jennie was so kind and loving, and she loved children and animals,” said Jill Kiesow, Activities Director at Tecumseh Place.

Door-to-door vendors need permits from city

The City of Tecumseh reminds residents that vendors selling door-to-door must have a license from the city to do so, according to city ordinance. The ordinance regulates organizations, companies and persons soliciting sales door-to-door in the city’s residential areas “to protect general health, safety and welfare of citizens.”Even those with permits are restricted to specific hours and may operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.“There are two things that are important for residents to know,” said Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch.
