Living Water Mission drills two new wells in Kenya

Pastor Tom Hawkins and a mission team recently returned from Kenya where NewSong Church and the Tecumseh community have been supporting a Living Water Mission. After making regular trips to Tecumseh to assist customers with their propane needs from Baker’s home office in Monroe, it became clear to owner Gary Klemz that Baker Propane, Inc. and Baker’s Gas & Welding Supplies, Inc. would be a good fit for Tecumseh. Waite to swim with D1s Golden Grizzlies

Tecumseh High School swimming standout Rachel Waite signed a letter of intent to attend Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., Wednesday. After a sterling career at THS, she will be moving on to swim for the Golden Grizzlies, a powerhouse among NCAA Division 1 teams.Waite signed in the THS Team Room with her father, Jack, and mother, Joan, looking on. She will report to Hamlin Hall dormitory on the Oakland campus next fall on a full-ride scholarship.

Cambrian Assisted Living, surrounded by her family and under the care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born February 24, 1925 in Albert Lea, Minnesota to Harlan and Adelia (Emerson) Wheeler. On June 4, 1949 in Minneapolis, Minn. she married James L. Anderson. Emily graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota with a degree in Fine Arts. She worked as the office manager at Tecumseh High School, and retired in 1991.

Lois Janette Schmitz

Lois Janette Schmitz, 84, of Lakeland, Florida, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at home. Lois was born in Dundee, Mich. on February 29, 1928. She was preceded in death by one son Stephen Schmitz. Lois was the daughter of the late Seaton A. and Edna Schrader Wilson of Tecumseh.She is survived by her loving husband Alfred, of 67 years, four loving devoted children, Connie (Dale) Olson of Coral Springs, Fla.; Kathleen (Troy) Hornberger of Myrtle Beach, SC; Alaina (Jim) Baumler of Escanaba, Mich.

Mausoleum restoration project revitalizes Brookside Cemetery gem

Restoration work on a mausoleum built in 1916 at Brookside Cemetery was recently completed with several companies working on various projects. The granite building with a white Italian marble interior and columns that had to have been turned on a large lathe sits behind the cemetery office and maintenance building. Cemetery Superintendent Dan Righter said that the structure was partially hidden for years.“It had some pine trees growing up against it and we later took those out,” said Righter.

Schmidt and Sons Pharmacy hit by B&E attempt in Clinton

CLINTON — Clinton Police were called to assist Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department the morning of Friday, Nov. 9, to an attempted break-in at Schmidt and Son’s Pharmacy in Clinton. The suspect was caught on surveillance video attempting to break into the back of the store, but was not able to enter the building. Some glass was found broken, from use of a baseball bat or other similar tool.Law enforcement watched the video and determined the suspect was left-handed, wearing a hoodie and a ski mask.

Charles Dean Schneirla

Charles D. Schneirla, age 85, of Tecumseh, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012. He was born January 25, 1927 in Clinton, the son of Charles and Anna (Daisher) Schneirla. He married Janice Harper in 1950 and sadly, she preceded him in death in 1992. He then married Thelma Martin on November 16, 1997 and she survives.Charles was a lifelong resident of the area. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church on the Ridge and a member of the Tecumseh VFW Post No.4187.

Ruth Gregg Bailey

Ruth Gregg Bailey, 89, of Tecumseh, passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012 in her home with her loving family by her side. She was born February 25, 1923 in Adrian, Michigan the daughter of W.D. and Anna (Timmerman) Gregg.Ruth was president of the Adrian High School class of 1941. She received her nursing degree in 1945 from Highland Park General Hospital. On March 22, 1946 she married her high school sweetheart, William P. (Deke) Bailey and he preceded her in death on October 20, 2011.

Esperanza “Hope” Garcia, age 79, of Adrian, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at the Hospice of Lenawee’s Hospice Home surrounded by her loving family. She was born November 11, 1933, in San Antonio, Texas, to Rufugio and Thomasa (Bill) DeLaCruz. On July 19, 1950, in Adrian, she married Francisco Garcia and he precedes her in death. Two gold and three bronze medals hung from Tecumseh senior swimmer Rachel Waite’s neck after the Southern Michigan Independent Swim League (SMISL) championships and in her hands was the prestigious Swimmer of the Meet trophy.Tecumseh placed fifth as hosts of the meet on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a score of 201 points while Milan was first with 505. Bedford finished second (411) while Adrian was third (391.5). Chelsea (243) and Monroe (199.5) rounded out the competing teams.Rachel Waite placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a new Tecumseh Community Pool record time of 1:08.03.

City crews demolish hillside vault at Brookside Cemetery

A well-recognized city landmark that has stood on the hillside at Brookside Cemetery since 1882 was removed by city crews Tuesday after a study found the granite face of the building was a hazard and too costly to repair. The vault, however, proved to be stronger than first thought when steel rods and other reinforcements were uncovered during the demolition. Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Woodward Smith

Martha Elizabeth “Betty” Woodward Smith passed away November 7, 2012, with all her children by her side at Tecumseh Place, Tecumseh, Michigan.She was born to John and Grace (Baker) Woodward March 18, 1924 in Kansas City, Mo., and spent her early childhood in Ferguson, Mo., then moved to Chicago, where she studied voice from the age of thirteen. At age 14, she sang in Grant Park with the American Concert Orchestra of the WPA and from then on performed on the radio and in many other venues.

Donna Behe, age 65, of Tecumseh, formerly of Howell, passed away November 13, 2012.Donna was born February 21, 1947 in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Donald and Mabel (Smith) Martin.
