Nathan L. Hawkins

Nathan L. Hawkins, 59, of Adrian passed away on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 at his home.Nathan was born on Jan. 11, 1954, in Tecumseh, to Lloyd and Virginia (Nortley) Hawkins. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1972, and went on to receive his journeyman mechanic training. Nathan worked at Tecumseh Products, Libby-Owens-Ford and Grand Court.

Archer family continues outreach to families with autistic children

Local autism activist Melissa Archer is looking forward to the Second Annual Tee for Technology on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Wolf Creek Golf Club in Adrian. “I’m excited about the whole thing,” she said. “We still need teams. We still need sponsors.”For many families with children on the autism spectrum, language communication is the greatest barrier.

LISD invalidates appointment to Tecumseh School Board

In special session Monday night, Aug. 19, the Tecumseh Public Schools Board of Education convened to address two pressing issues, the first unforeseen, the second expected.The first issue was to take action on a misstep in the appointment of trustee Debbie Johnson-Berges to fill the unexpired term of Matt Oren, who moved from the district in late May.

Clinton man arraigned on stalking charge

Kent Ellsworth Losee, 45, a resident of Clinton Township, was arraigned Thursday, Aug. 15, in Lenawee County District Court on felony charges of stalking a neighbor’s 15-year-old daughter. The girl’s family had filed a personal protection order, signed by Judge Margaret Noe, on October 1, 2012.According to court records, Losee faces the following felony charges: Count 1 — Stalking a minor, aggravated; and Count 2 — Computer used to commit a felony. A preliminary hearing was set for Monday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. in Judge Laura Schaedler’s Lenawee County District Courtroom.

Compassionate vet was ‘fabulous’ in handling loss of family pet

To the Editor,On Wednesday, August 7, we lost our nine-year-old cocker spaniel to a massive tumor that burst in his stomach. As with all pet owners, I was devastated and cried and cried from a broken heart.Almost two weeks later I feel very lost without him under my feet.Originally, he was a rescue dog that was found in a field six years ago. I know I gave him a good life and he gave me his unconditional love.The evening of his death I called Dr. Lori Tritt after hours. She was fabulous in her compassion and her professional manner in handling a grieving situation.

Diver ‘feels bad’ that people did not know about fly-in at airport

To the Editor,To the people of the Tecumseh area, I do feel bad that I was not able to get the word out to you about a very special event that recently happened in our town, concerning Tecumseh’s heritage. July 22 through July 29 we hosted a fly-in for Meyers Airplanes, built right here. All three models hold exceptional status in the aviation community.Considering the price of Avgas [aviation gasoline] we had a remarkable turn out. Six Meyers OTW Biplanes, built here in 1940-1943. A Myers 145, built here in the 50s and 14 Meyers 200s. Several came from over 2,000 miles away.

CAT benefit to feature live entertainment, food, auction

On Saturday, Sept. 21, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., Community Arts of Tecumseh (CAT) will bring the sound of music to Hantz Golf Club with the Tecumseh Music Fest. This evening of live rock, blues and jazz music paired with food and fun activities will help raise money for CAT art programs throughout the year.CAT is a non-profit arts organization that serves youth and adults in Tecumseh, offering educational opportunities in visual arts and music. Jerry’s Market and Hantz Golf Club are the major sponsors for the event, and are working together to provide the food, served from 5 p.m.

Gerald M. Schmidt

Gerald Michael Schmidt, age 67 of Woodville, Ohio died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at his home. He was an avid Tigers fan and enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, doing woodworking and playing pool. Gerald is survived by his siblings, Arlene Schmidt of Milan, Robert Schmidt of Dexter and Bill Schmidt of Tecumseh. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathew Alvin and Barbara Jean (Smith) Schmidt; brothers and sisters, Allen, Kay, Barbara Jean, and Ronald.Funeral services for Gerald were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug.

Eden Foods in court Oct. 2

CLINTON — October 2 is the date for a federal appeals court to hear arguments on Eden Foods’ request for a preliminary injunction. The Clinton company and its owner, Michael Potter, want exemption from federal requirements to provide birth control coverage to employees as part of its health insurance package.Potter’s suit, filed in March, says the contraception requirement in the new health care law goes against his Catholic religious beliefs.

Sr. Master Sandoval awarded 8th degree black belt

Senior Master Tomas Sandoval was recently notified that he passed his American Taekwondo Association (ATA) testing for an 8th degree black belt, held at the World Championships in Little Rock, Ark., July 8-14.While testing for the new belt, Sr. Master Sandoval won his first ever World Champion title in forms.He has owned and operated Sandoval’s ATA Marshal Arts in Tecumseh, 109 North Evans, since 1984, and produced hundreds of black belts, including three other ATA World Champions.His studio in Tecumseh offers several programs for youth and adults.

'Kids for Kids' program helps kids stay sharp over summer months

What started as a Tecumseh family project is now on its way to becoming a nonprofit organization that will help kids remain learning-ready while they take a summer break between schools years. A program called, “Kids for Kids,” is designed to help kids “Stay Sharp, Be Smart” over the summer.Maura and Matt Rains have been coaching their sons Blakely, 8, and Hudson, 10, through workbook projects for the past few summers using Think Stretch Summer Learning workbooks, which come with a parent resource guide.

Time running out for Red Mill Pond dam work this fall

With the Lenawee County Drain Commission still awaiting a permit giving approval to drawdown Red Mill Pond yet this year, time is the big factor, according to Drain Commissioner Stephen May. He said obtaining the permit is key to whether planned maintenance and repair on the dam will be a “go” or “no go” in 2013. State officials have promised an answer by August 28.“The permit is the trigger, and even then, it’s a fairly tight schedule,” said May. “It’s getting a little uncomfortable for this office and the engineering firm.”May met on Wednesday, Aug.

Indians’ varsity boys basketball coach steps down

By MICKEY ALVARADOAfter two seasons of incorporating his varsity boys basketball playbook as Tecumseh High School’s head coach, Marc Comstock has stepped down and is leaving the position for another opportunity with Siena Heights University.Comstock said he is going be an assistant coach at Siena Heights University.Comstock joined the Indians in 2011, coming in from Adrian High School where he was the head coach for six years.“We were on the right track to making improvements,” Tecumseh Superintendent Kelly Coffin said of the last two seasons with Comstock leading the program.

Emeline ‘Em’ A. Good

Emeline ‘Em’ A. Good, 83, of Tecumseh, passed away Saturday, August 10, 2013, at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Lenawee.Born April 17, 1930, in Blissfield, Mich., she was the only child of Joseph and Helen (Demusky) Dvorsky. She graduated from Blissfield High School with the Class of 1947.On June 25, 1949, Emeline married Donald Good, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Blissfield, and recently celebrated their 63rd anniversary.Em was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Tecumseh.

Howard J. Baughey

Howard J. Baughey, age 85, a longtime Tecumseh resident, passed away peacefully August 9, 2013, at Provincial House, Adrian, Mich., with the caring help of Hospice of Lenawee.Howard was born September 1, 1927, in Adrian, the son of Andrew and Marie (Sneyd) Baughey.Howard served four years in the U. S.
