Advancing to state final thrilling for Indians

By MICKEY ALVARADOPlaying in a state championship game is about as exciting as it gets for high school teams and coaches and the experience is one Tecumseh High School varsity volleyball coach Kerry Watkins will not soon forget.Watkins has coached the Indians for the past five seasons and winning the regional title and advancing to the Class B state quarterfinals was the furthest she’d ever taken the Indians. But they weren’t done quite yet.

Tillotson joins Siena Heights University

By MICKEY ALVARADOCarly Tillotson put a cap on her and Tecumseh High School’s most successful volleyball season ever by signing a letter of commitment to attend Siena Heights University and play for the Saints next year.Siena Heights volleyball coach Mike Watkins has had his eyes on the Tilotsons for years and couldn’t have been happier to have Carley officially commit to play with the Saints on Monday. He’s been watching Carly’s impressive statistics compile and wanted to get her to join the Saints’ program.

Christmas Candlelight Home Tour coming Dec. 2-3

By DEB WUETHRICHThe Promenade Committee will present the 2011 Christmas Candlelight Tour on Friday, Dec. 2, and Saturday, Dec. 3. Tour times for both evenings are 5:30-8 p.m.A few years ago, the Promenade Committee decided to revive an earlier tradition of opening up some homes for a holiday tour. Tickets are $5 for three homes and the Tecumseh Area Historical Museum.“I think we’ve been doing it for six or seven years now,” said Pat VanCamp, a member of the committee.

Tecumseh Service Club seeks donations for annual Adopt-A-Family program

The Adopt-A-Family program through the Tecumseh Service Club is well underway. People who would like to adopt a family can call the Service Club anytime now, and there are also other ways to help.The Daily Grind and Pamida are each hosting a Christmas tree decorated with gift tags for the Service Club adopted families. Those who take one should remove a gift tag from the tree and return the item listed on the tag to the store.Also, the Club is looking for the donation of toilet paper and laundry detergent to supplement the food boxes given to each adopted family.

THS grad directs benefit concert at Siena Heights University

By MARY KAY McCORMICKTecumseh graduate Sarah Nowak was in her first major theater production during fifth grade. Playing the part of a mouse in “Cinderella” at the Croswell, Nowak was officially bitten by the theater bug. After that memorable experience, she immersed herself as much as possible in the theater from acting in local plays and musicals, to working at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts, to seeing as many Broadway productions as she could.Now a senior at Siena Heights University, Nowak is finishing up her degree in theater.

Death of Tecumseh man ruled ‘natural causes’

Following an investigation into the death of a Tecumseh man, the Tecumseh Police Department has determined that the resident died of natural causes. Robert Lawrence Sterling, age 53, of Tecumseh, was found deceased on Monday, Nov. 28, by Tecumseh police, who responded to a phone call from the Ravenwood apartment complex manager.The apartment manager stated that he was checking on a resident of the complex who had not been seen nor heard from since Friday. Upon checking, the manager found the male subject unresponsive.

Clinton to host Holiday Home Tour

Clinton hosts its second annual Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to celebrate the holiday season. The tour highlights four homes in the community and the Smith-Kimball Community Center. Vintage nativity scenes are featured inside the United Church of Christ.Holiday décor is the focus of all the stops on the tour.

State Police give student bus fleet perfect score

Richard J. Blue of Dixon, IL and formerly of Durand, Mich., died Friday November 25, 2011 at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Elgin, Ill. New CISTA program helps students with homework

By DEANE ERTSIf you are a Tecumseh Middle School (TMS) student who is having difficulty with a class assignment or subject, you now are able to get some free tutoring, thanks to a program instituted by Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA).The after-school homework help program is under the direction of CISTA site coordinator Cindy Hook and is held in the TMS media center beginning immediately after the last bell at 2:30 p.m.

Parks and Recreation to host third annual Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge

By DEB WUETHRICHTecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch reported to council members Monday night that the Tecumseh Parks and Recreation Department will host the 3rd Annual Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge this winter. Welch invited city council members, along with the public, to participate in the challenge.Mayor Richard Johnson and his wife, Susan, will be participating in the 12-week program this year.The Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge will begin on Sunday, Jan. 29 with a kick-off event at the Tecumseh Center for the Arts.

They’d watched Tawni Vollmer and then their sister, Kara, pick up individual state titles while helping the Indians to three consecutive state championships.

Clark breaks scoring record in Clinton opener

Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team defeated Manchester 92-81 on Monday, Dec. 5. Manchester’s high-risk/high-reward system yielded advantages for the Redskins just about every time down the floor, according to coach Mike Ruhl. Clinton was able to break traps and cash in on many of those opportunities, shooting 35-59 from the floor.Grant Clark cashed in on numerous opportunities (26/35 shooting, 7/14 from free throw line), shattering Clinton’s single-game scoring record of 44 points, set by Chad Dunigan during the 1999-2000 season, by scoring 59 points.

DARWIN E. “DUTCH” CREGER

Darwin E. “Dutch” Creger, age 83, passed away at Herrick Medical Center in Tecumseh December 6, 2011. He was born January 10, 1928, in Tecumseh, the son of Harry and Bertha (Whaley) Creger. He married Mary Helen Flory on September 11, 1948, and she survives.Dutch was a lifetime resident of Tecumseh. One of his proudest moments was being the first graduate of the Class of 2002 to receive his high school diploma at the newly c o n s t r u c t e d Tecumseh High School. Dutch was a veteran of the U.S.

Comstock handed loss in first game with Indians

ROBERT L. 'BUBBA' STERLING, JR

Robert L. "Bubba" Sterling, Jr., age 53, of Tecumseh, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 28, 2011.Robert was born September 6, 1958 in Hamburg, Germany the first of three sons to Robert and Waltraud (Stolz) Sterling. Bob was a 1976 graduate of Tecumseh High School. Shortly after graduation, Bob entered the United States Army until discharged in 1988. Bob enjoyed learning and received a Business Administration degree while in the Army. His education continued throughout his life.

OLIVE MARJORIE (GILLIN) MACK

Olive Marjorie (Gillin) Mack, age 96, of Tecumseh, passed away Nov. 30, 2011, at the home of her daughter in Beckley, W.Va.Olive was born April 5, 1915 in Johnstown, Penn., the daughter of Merton and Jenny Lee (Sensabaugh) Gillin.On May 7, 1934, she married David Mack in Cumberland, Maryland and he preceded her in death August 10, 1998.Olive was a kind and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother. She loved gardening, bird watching, cooking, traveling and fishing.
