Senior athletes honored at Tecumseh High School banquet

It was no surprise to those attending Tecumseh High School’s Senior Athletic Banquet on Wednesday, May 22, when principal Griff Mills announced the names of Rachel Waite and John Terry as this year’s Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Clarence Arthur Schroeder

Clarence Arthur Schroeder went to be with Jesus early Monday morning, May 27, 2013. He was born on February 26, 1925 and lived his whole life in Britton and Tecumseh, Mich. He was fondly called many names. He was called Dad by his children: Thomas (Pamela) Schroeder of Milan, Mich; Richard (Diane) Schroeder of Carson City, Mich; Mary (Mark) Tommelein of Tecumseh, Mich. He was called “Opa” by his grandchildren and their spouses (Heidi, Emily, Andrew, Craig, Krista, Jacob, Melissa, and Matt) and their spouses and by his 15 great-grandchildren.

Tribe's boys lacrosse team defeats Bulldogs 19-3

William J. Marsh

William J. Marsh, age 80 of Tecumseh, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Bixby Hospital. He was born July 13, 1932 in Bluffton, Ind., the son of Chester and Hazel Marsh. On August 25, 1951 he married Violet Hoffman in Detroit, Mich., and she survives.William was an active member of Clinton United Methodist Church. He was the past master of the Masonic Lodge in Detroit and transferred to Saline. William was a member of the Detroit Carpenters Union 687 for over 50 years. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, and was active with Meals on Wheels.

Clinton boys place second, win share of TCC title

Clinton’s varsity boys track team hosted the Tri-County Conference meet on Wednesday May 22, and earned a strong second place finish to guarantee a share of the TCC overall championship, its first since 1984. First place finishers included Clinton’s 3200-meter relay team of Ryan Rogers, Justin Swisher, Jimmy Phillips and Dominic Muessig. Muessig also placed first in the 800- and 1600-meter runs while Rogers placed first in the 3200-meter run. Clinton’s 1600-meter relay team (Ryan Piatt, Tom Vinton, Mathew Sexton, Muessig) also placed first.

T-shirt sales benefitted cystic fibrosis, not cancer

To the Editor,An error was made in last night’s paper [May 23, 2013] that to some might seem small but to others like me is grievous! I have had the privilege of meeting Katie Martin on three different occasions. Katie, like my youngest daughter Ashley, suffers from cystic fibrosis. It was a chance meeting the first time. At that time Katie was selling rubber bracelets for the benefit of cystic fibrosis and I bought several from her and came back again as I needed more.

Dan Sidney Root

Dan Sidney Root, 87 of Tecumseh passed away peacefully on May 22 at Tecumseh Place. He was born Dec. 28, 1925 in Albion, N.Y., the son of Orpheus Arnold and Ellen (Curtin) Root. He was married to Margery Ann Garvey on June 27, 1953 and she preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2009.Dan graduated from the University of Detroit with a Business Administration degree, and was employed in municipal bond sales for 25 years, followed by 10 years as a tax assessor. He was a regular member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Tecumseh.

Norma Lee Myers

Norma Lee Myers, age 90, of Tecumseh, passed peacefully with family by her side from this life to her forever home in Heaven on May 21, 2013.Norma was born in (Avery County) Roaring Creek, N.C. on June 11, 1922 to the late Rome and Jenny (Easter) Hughes. On April 23, 1945 she married Johnie Cameron Myers in Elizabethton, Tenn. and he preceded her in death.Norma has seven children, Brenda (Peyton) Bunting, (deceased) formerly of Tecumseh — Joe (Diane) Myers of Lancaster, Ohio — J. C.

Luke Alphonse (Miller). 06/26/1972-05/17/2013. With heavy hearts, the family of Luke Alphonse wish to share the passing of Luke’s life on Friday, May 17, 2013. He was born to Don and Marilyn Bloom Miller on June 26, 1972 in Detroit, Mich. Luke grew up in the Tecumseh, Mich., area.Pursuing his passion after high school, he attended Pivot Point Cosmetology in Chicago, Ill. Thereafter he traveled around the globe with well-known product manufacturer, Redken, styling models and teaching. Luke was an expert in his field and well loved by hundreds of clients.

Aquatic invasive species on the rise in Lenawee County

A perfect summer picture for many people includes the sun shining on calm waters of a lake or pond. This picture does not include invasive plants or intruders in the water. However, more aquatic invasive species are here or moving closer to Lenawee County lakes and ponds.“Any body of water has the ability to be infected,” said Gary Marzolf, past president of the Devils and Round Lakes Preservation League. “It’s a big war we have to contend with.”The state of Michigan is known not just for her large bodies of fresh water, but also for her abundance of inland lakes and waterways.

Tecumseh 5K race benefits diabetes education program

Saturday morning, May 18, was a beautiful day for a race, and 130 runners, plus 30 walkers, took advantage of the fine weather to participate in the Ninth Annual ProMedica Race for Diabetes 5K at Herrick Hospital.The race began at 9 a.m. sharp and the first runner, Bob Bridges of Onsted, competing in the men’s 50- to 54-year-old division, crossed the finish line 19 minutes and 26 seconds later to take first place overall.

Day care closing, owner sends thank you to community

To the Editor,Souls That Smile Child Care is closing on May 24th, after 17 years in business. I want to thank this community for giving me so many reasons to enjoy caring for children in this wonderful city. I thank the library, post office, grocery stores, banks, restaurants and other local businesses who welcomed us with open arms. Special thanks to “our Amy” for the treats from the Family Frosty. Mrs. Michele has provided playgroup activities and these have been awesome.

To the Editor,In response to Mr. Potters’ recent lawsuit limiting the healthcare choices of his employees, I would like to state: I had been a long time buyer and proponent of Eden Foods. I will certainly stop on both counts if Mr. Potter persists. While Mr. Potter can make these personal choices about healthcare for himself, it is arrogant, and paternalistic to impose those on his employees. Shame on him. This is no impingement of his morals or values, by imposing his personal choices on others he is proving to be a reprehensible person.

City coordinates effort to collect donations for tornado victims

The city of Tecumseh is coordinating a fundraising drive to benefit victims of the May 20 tornado in Moore, Oklahoma. Canisters will be located at Tecumseh City Hall, Big Boy, Martin’s Home Center, Schmidt and Sons Pharmacy, Daily Grind, The Dog House Restaurant, Perky’s Eastside, and Perky’s at Pentecost Hwy. Memorial Day to feature flyovers, parade, Brookside Cemetery service

Tecumseh’s Memorial Day commemoration will include the traditional parade at 10 a.m., with a line-up at City Hall and march to Union Street, ending at Brookside Cemetery. “We have 75 to 80 units this year,” said Memorial Day Parade Marshal Gary Naugle. He added that the Plymouth Fife and Drum Corp will again visit the city this year. Council directs city manager to seek livery lease

In a 6-1 vote following several minutes of discussion on Monday, May 20, Tecumseh City Council members authorized City Manager Kevin Welch to pursue a lease agreement with Tecumseh Paddling Company (TPC), owned by Mark and Jennifer Johnson, for rental of space for a canoe and kayak livery at the Tecumseh Community Center. The space would be in an unimproved section of the building’s lower level. Mark Johnson, who currently serves as a river guide in West Virginia, initially approached the city several weeks ago regarding the possibility of operating a business from the community center.

Tecumseh track teams compete at regionals

Tecumseh’s varsity boys track team placed eighth while the Indians’ girls finished 12th at the Michigan High School Athletic Association regional meet at Livonia Ladywood on Saturday. May 18.Chelsea placed first in the boy’s meet with a score of 189 while the Indians were eighth with 37.50.

Tecumseh wins SEC White title

A two game sweep over visiting Adrian on Monday, May 20, gave Tecumseh’s varsity baseball team the Southeastern Conference (SEC) White Division championship. Tecumseh beat the Maples 10-0 and 6-0.Tecumseh head coach Tom Bullinger said that good pitching and timely hitting by a number of players led to the title.“Our seniors have shown great leadership and all eight were able to play together in the second game as a freshman pitched on the mound for us in [Sam] Benschoter,” said Bullinger.
