Downtown is focal point for Art in August event

Art in August activities took place throughout the day on Friday, Aug. 24, in downtown Tecumseh as plein air artists took to the Boulevard and area parks. During the evening, art pieces were on display during a reception at the Black Door Gallery.

Board votes to hire professional supt. search team

The Tecumseh School Board dealt with a number of issues concerning preparation for the coming school year during its meeting Monday, Aug. 27, among them was the continuing discussion of how to conduct the search for the new superintendent of schools. A motion to enlist a professional team to conduct the search had been discussed at previous meetings and the board had reached an informal consensus that the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) offered a reasonably priced search service to its members.

Clinton starts off with big victory over Manchester

Clinton’s varsity football team opened its 2012 football season with a big victory over rival Manchester on Friday at home, defeating the Dutchman 32-14. Scoring for Clinton were TJ Baker with 31- and one-yard touchdown runs and Colin Poore with TD runs of 22- and 29-yards. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone for his third touchdown of the night. Gannon Nelson kicked two extra point kicks to round out the Redskins’ scoring. Poore led Clinton’s rushing attack with 140-yards on 14 carries followed closely by Baker with 120-yards gained on 14 carries.

BD shuts out Jonesville in season opener

Briton Deerfield’s varsity football team defeated visiting Jonesville 40-0 on Friday, Aug. 24, to open the 2012 season.The Patriots allowed the Bobcats only 75 yards in total offense while grinding out 287-yards from the ground game. Brant Swindeman led BD’s rushing with 187-yards gained on 17 carries for two touchdowns.

Hopes others will learn from herbicide use at Sand Lake

To the Editor,When Sand Lake identified a problem with invasive aquatic weed species in 2009, including Eurasion Water Milfoil and Starry Stonewort, people were very concerned. Invasive species represent a serious threat that may greatly limit use of a lake and even damage the natural habitat. Many lakes have experienced difficulty in controlling invasive species, but we were fortunate in selecting a chemical treatment that has proven quite effective.The purpose of this letter is to share our experience to benefit people in other lakes.

Jeffrey Lee Keith

Jeffrey Lee Keith, age 47, of Tecumseh, passed away August 28, 2012.Jeffrey was born January 16, 1965 in Tecumseh, Mich., the son of Willard and Jane (Rose) Keith. He was a graduate of Tecumseh High School and worked for many years at Tecumseh Products.Jeffrey loved to fish, work on cars, especially his Jeep, watching the Detroit Tigers and most of all, the Detroit Red Wings.

William E. Lively

William E. Lively, age 88 of Tecumseh, died peacefully at Cambrian Assisted Living with his family at his side and under the gentle care of Hospice of Lenawee. He was born on October 9, 1923 in Clay, Ky., the son of Elbert and Mary (Tow) Lively. He married Betty McMahon on November 27, 1946 and celebrated 65 years of marriage this past year.Bill served as a B29 mechanic in the Army Air Force in WWII. He was a Scoutmaster. He loved to read and authored many writings. He restored a wooden sailboat and built his retirement dream home in Traverse City.Bill believed he was born a teacher.

City to consult with MSU on problem with deer population

For some time, residents have been noticing an increase in the deer population roaming the Tecumseh community. Their numbers concern people from a safety perspective with car-deer collisions, and some complaints are based on too many of the species feasting in gardens and tearing up yards.Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch was asked by council a few months ago to look into what strategies might be taken to control the deer population in the city.

Red Mill Pond dam process continues

A process to establish a legal lake level and an assessment district for repairs to the Red Mill Dam is continuing to make progress, according to Stephen May, Lenawee County Drain Commissioner. In June, May had encouraged the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners to support an option for the dam that was estimated to cost approximately $315,000 after the engineering firm of Fishback, Thompson, Carr and Huber of Grand Rapids conducted a study to review potential options for maintaining the dam earlier this year.

First Presbyterian Church of Tecumseh continues working through division

The congregation of the Tecumseh First Presbyterian Church have been divided over theological issues, prompting one group of parishioners to break away and form Covenant Church, housed in the former St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on N. Evans Street. The group now at Covenant Church attempted to follow a “Process for Separation” from the Maumee Valley Presbytery and the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) while a smaller group chose to remain with PCUSA earlier this year.
