Found darts leads to beach closing

Tecumseh police are investigating a complaint at Tecumseh Park (The Pit) where at least 16 darts have been found on the beach area and in the water. The darts were discovered on Wednesday, June 25. Staff from Tecumseh Parks and Recreation cleared people from the beach and water while erecting barriers. No injuries were reported. However, swimming and use of the beach is prohibited until further notice. The picnic areas of the park remain open at this time.

Virginia Meade

Virginia Meade, 90, of Tecumseh, passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. She was born on December 7, 1923 in Mt. Pulaski, Ill., the daughter of John and Daisy (Van Hook) Milner. On March 16, 1945 she married James Meade and he preceded her in death on January 23, 2011.Virginia graduated from Mt. Pulaski High School and was a previous member of the Tecumseh Friends Church for several years. During World War II, she worked at the Hayden Ford Mill in Tecumseh. She had a musical gift to play the organ, which she had never taken lessons for.

Staff at Tecumseh High School provide quality education for students

Pure Michigan Instagram Challenge kicks off to promote states beaches

Social media will be helping promote the best beaches throughout the state of Michigan as Pure Michigan, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are asking the general public to share their favorite beach photographs on Instagram.The Pure Michigan Instagram Challenge kicked off Friday, June 20 and lasts for 10 days.

Raisin Township committee discusses options for road funding

On Thursday, June 19, the Raisin Township road committee met to discuss what possibilities were available that they could present the township board with to help bolster road funding. The committee, which was created at the Monday, June 9 regular township meeting, was tasked with reviewing a report from Raisin Township Supervisor Jay Cavanaugh and coming up with ways to fund township road maintenance to present to the board. “My contention is that we’re 40 years behind the curve on this issue,” said Committee Chair Steven McGee.

Clinton ends softball season with 7-5 loss in state semifinal

A solid season came to an end for Clinton High School’s varsity softball team as the Redskins advanced to the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Division 3 state semifinal held at Michigan State University on Friday, June 13, but was defeated 7-5 by Unionville-Sebewaing.The Patriots scored two runs off of Clinton’s starting pitcher, Megan Burton, in the first inning. The Redskins were plagued with five errors, beginning with the first batter reaching base on a fielding error.

Jimmie Johnson wins in Michigan

NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick congratulated Jimmy Johnson in victory lane for winning his first-ever Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15, but stood right next to crew chief Chad Knaus for the team trophy photos with his arm tight around his waist.Johnson finally recorded his first Sprint Cup Series victory in the Irish Hills after Knaus made a critical call with 35 laps remaining in the race to change all four of his driver’s tires.

City Council considers millage, fees to pay for road maintenance

With Michigan lawmakers on summer break and still no fix for the state’s roads, Tecumseh City Council made the first move to find ways to fix them.“Road funding is certainly not where it needs to be to support the amount of road work that is needed,” said Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch.At the Monday Tecumseh City Council meeting, council members discussed possibilities on how to address the city’s roads, which were presented at a May 12 study session of the 2014 Strategic Plan prior to the regular meeting that day.“I reviewed a strategic plan with you,” said Welch.

Summer music events return at TCA, Adam’s Park

Temperatures are rising and music will soon be in the air, so it must be summer in Tecumseh. The city offers two ways to enjoy music during the heat of summer.This is the third year for Tecumseh Center for the Arts’ Black Box series bringing the sound of Michigan musicians to Tecumseh on the fourth Thursday of the month. Music in the Park complements the Classic Car and Bike show on the third Thursday of the month through September.Shelley Lim, director of cultural and leisure services, helps coordinate the two concert series.

CISTA coordinators thank supporters of Community Walk

To the Editor,Communities in Schools of the Tecumseh Area’s (CISTA) mission statement is “To surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.”Tecumseh is a wonderful community that eagerly supports the programs that enrich the lives of children!Each year second grade students from all four elementary buildings participate in a Community Walk coordinated by CISTA.The students learn about historic and government entities in Tecumseh and tour some local businesses.

Naomi Ruth Spohr

Naomi Ruth Spohr, 85, of Adrian, Mich., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 14, 2014, under the care of Lenawee Medical Care Facility.Naomi was born January 26, 1929, in Jackson, Mich., the daughter of Rev. Pierre and Monabelle (DeCamp) Hawley. On October 21, 1947, she married Lee Spohr of Britton. He preceded her in death on April 16, 2013.Naomi enjoyed being a wife and mother. She worked with her husband, Lee, on the family farm and invested her time raising her children. She enjoyed sewing, decorating, and entertaining family and friends in her home.

Maurine Hannibal

Maurine Hannibal, age 88, formerly of Tecumseh and Lake Placid, Fla., passed away June 12, 2014 at Green Acres Assisted Living, Greenville, Mich. Maurine was born March 17, 1926 in Sand Springs, Okla., the daughter of Mitchell and Fay (Marrs) Dray. She was a 1944 graduate of Ouachita Parrish High School in Monroe, La., and attended Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, La. On January 24, 1946 she married Bill Hannibal. He preceded her in death in 2006 having celebrated 60 years of marriage. Maurine was an avid golfer and was sixteen-time club champion at Tecumseh Country Club.

Sheila Kaye Bihlmeyer

Sheila Kaye Bihlmeyer was born July 19, 1960 and died on June 9, 2014. She was a graduate of the class of 1978 from Tecumseh. She will be remembered by many for her beautiful smile and kindness. She is survived by: three children, son Kyle (Heather) Zimmerman, daughter Karlee (Brad) Zimmerman, and son Keenan Zimmerman; six grandchildren; three sisters, Teresa (Gordon) Henning, Luana (Bill) Bailey and twin Sheryl (Daniel) Richard; stepmom Trudy Bihlmeyer; stepfather Ed Mantel; stepsisters and brothers and many nieces and nephews.

Vera “Maxine” Curtis

Vera “Maxine” Curtis, age 89 of Tecumseh died Thursday, June 12, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 28, 1924 in Stockbridge to Carl and Estella (Stanfield) Barth. On February 23, 1946 in Jackson she married Donald Curtis. Maxine enjoyed gardening, flowers and bird watching.

Kathleen Kay (Davis) Oliver

Kathleen Kay (Davis) Oliver of Jackson, Mich., passed away on June 13, 2014 at the age of 76. She was born to William F. and Dorothy L. Davis on August 2, 1937 in Jackson. She married Orvil Ray Oliver on September 3, 1957. She was the owner and operator of Allskate Fun Center. She was a member of the United Methodist Church RSA, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Humane Society, and MDA. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 55 years Orvil Ray Oliver; children Mark R. (Lisa) Oliver, Kirk R. (Pam) Oliver, and Leslie L.

Parks and Rec offers activities for summer

Summer is just around the corner for Tecumseh families, and the parks and recreation department has plenty to keep everyone in the family active and happy during the warmest months of the year.Classes have been in session for Tot Baseball for ages five and six as well as tennis for players age 10 and under. Next up is tennis for those between the ages of 11 and 14.
