Couple grateful for ‘caring neighbors’ who folded flag

To the Editor,On January 19, we experienced strong winds during the night so strong that our flagpole, with the American flag on it, was blown down, onto the driveway. I noticed it when I got up and thought I would pick it up when we left for church. At 8:30 I opened the garage door and found that someone had come by, unhooked the flag, folded it in the proper military triangle, and laid it on our doormat.My wife and I don’t know who this gracious person was that did such a wonderful and kind act.

Velma Leota Smith

Velma Leota Smith, age 99, of Tecumseh passed away at Herrick Manor on February 2, 2013. Velma was born March 5, 1913 in Vinton County Ohio, the daughter of Perry and Clara Huff. On April 27, 1934, she married Lawrence R. Smith in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on May 26, 1999.Velma worked at Ford Motor Company in Saline for 17 years, retiring in 1974. She was an avid reader and a staunch believer that you are never too old to learn. She belonged to the Shamrock card club in Clinton for many years. She also played cards and bingo at the Tecumseh Senior Center.

James A. Kotts

James A. “Jim” Kotts, age 72 of Brooklyn, passed away February 5, 2013 at his home with his wife and best buddy, “Jim”, along with his beloved cats Lucky and Snoopy by his side. He was born June 9, 1940 in Tecumseh, Mich., the son of John and Louise (Williams) Kotts. He spent twenty-two years with the love of his life, Kathy (Leach) Hoekstra and was united in marriage to her on May 18, 2002. Jim was a truck driver with the Budd Company until he retired and then began driving for Martin, Best Way and other trucking companies.

Florence Rachel Willis Waltman

Florence Rachel Willis Waltman passed away January 31, 2013. She was born February 9, 1917 to Earl and Mabel (Martin) Willis in Riceville, Iowa. She graduated from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1935. She wed William “Bill” Waltman in Chicago 1943. The couple raised four sons.With degrees in secondary education from the University of Northern Iowa and Colorado State University, Florence began her career in education in Iowa, but spent the next 20 years working in Fountain, Colorado at Fountain-Fort Carson Schools before retiring.

Clinton tops Whitmore Lake in homecoming

A big 22-point fourth quarter secured a Tri-County Conference victory for Clinton’s varsity boys basketball team on Friday, Feb. 1, with the Redskins recording a 68-57 victory over visiting Whitmore Lake.Clinton held a one-point (19-18) lead after one quarter of play and finished the first half with a two-point (32-30) advantage.At halftime, the Redskins crowned Kellen Craig homecoming queen and Johnny Allen homecoming king.The Redskins increased their lead to 46-42 heading into the final quarter and controlled the court in the fourth with a 22-point offensive effort to secure the victory.

Patriots fall to Whiteford after win at Webberville

A 48-27 victory at Webberville on Tuesday, Jan. 29, improved Britton Deerfield’s varsity boys basketball team’s overall record to 3-7. However, the Patriots lost 69-57 in their following home game on Friday, Feb. 1 against Whiteford.The Patriots won all four quarters en route to the win at Webberville. BD held a 15-6 lead after the first quarter and finished the half with a 27-8 lead.Webberville almost matched the Patriots’ scoring in the third quarter but went into the final quarter down by 20 points (40-20).

Indians edge Lincoln, lose to Bedford

A seven game home stretch started out well for Tecumseh’s varsity boys basketball team with the Indians recording a solid 44-40 Southeastern Conference victory against visiting Lincoln on Friday, Feb. 1. However, the Indians weren’t as fortunate on Tuesday, Feb.

Power-Tec Manufacturing plant to leave Raisin Twp.

Power-Tec Manufacturing LLC, formerly Cyltec, will soon be closing its Raisin Township factory site at 5500 S. Occidental Highway, Tecumseh. Power-Tec is a Revstone company and its services include machining and assembly of cylinder heads, supercharger housings, connecting rods and other major cast components according to the company’s website.

Tecumseh School Board to pick two finalists for superintendent

The Tecumseh School Board will meet in special session Monday, Feb. 4, to pick the two finalists in the search for the new superintendent for Tecumseh Public Schools after interviewing the last two candidates for the position Thursday, Jan. 31.The Monday meeting will begin with the trustees meeting in open session at 7 p.m. and immediately recessing to executive session.

Jeopardy winner comes to Tecumseh for a TDL Jeopardy showdown

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, Tecumseh District Library (TDL) welcomes Adrian College history professor Dr. Stephanie Jass, to discuss her eight-day run on the popular game show “Jeopardy!” The Milan resident has won more “Jeopardy!” games than any other woman. Her $147,570 in winnings puts her among the top 15 winners in the game show’s history.The evening also features a TDL Jeopardy Tournament with Jass facing off against Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch and TDL Director S.

James Douglas Barnett

James Douglas Barnett, age, 72, of Tecumseh, died Tuesday, Jan 29, 2013, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. He was born on August 3, 1940, in Adrian to Woodard and Ruth (Potts) Barnett. Jim served his country in the U.S. Air Force. On July 18, 1959, he married Ella Fuller in Baldwin, Kansas and she survives. Jim was employed by Associated Spring in Saline for 35 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Ridgeway Church of the Nazarene, the Bits and Pieces Radio Control Club, and a former member of the Pittsfield Volunteer Fire Department.

City rolls out Pure Michigan! campaign preview with new radio spot

People in Michigan and elsewhere are increasingly recognizing the pull of comedian Tim Allen’s voice and a familiar strain of music in the Pure Michigan! campaign on television and radio. Tecumseh now has its own radio narrative inviting visitors to the trails and natural beauty of the city and its surrounding area, and officials are ready to share the spot with locals. It will be launched as a feature statewide in April as part of the Pure Michigan!

Tecumseh School Board begins interviews to fill superintendent post

The long-anticipated interview process to find the successor for retiring Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Mike McAran began Tuesday, Jan. 29, with the first two of six candidates taking their place, one at a time, before the school board and members of the general public in the schools’ administrative service center, 212 N. Ottawa St.

Clinton earns TCC win over Morenci

Clinton’s varsity girls basketball team picked up its fourth Tri-County Conference victory of the season by defeating the Morenci Bulldogs 49-38 on Friday, Jan. 25. Leading the way for Clinton was Kristen Forest, scoring 16 points while also collecting three rebounds. Shannon Hill and Leigha Sanborn each scored nine points for the Redskins while junior co-captain Elizabeth Barkel and Melissa Dowell each grabbed seven rebounds.Clinton defeated Ann Arbor Greenhills 68-52 on Monday, Jan.

Four state cut times recorded by Indians in victory over Bedford

Four state qualifying times were recorded by Tecumseh’s varsity boys swim and dive team at home in a 131-55 victory against Bedford on Thursday, Jan. 24.There were also 22 personal best times recorded by the Indians as they won all but one event at the home meet.A state cut time was recorded by the Indians in the very first event of the evening, the 200 Medley Relay.

Three Indians crowned at county All-Star Tournament

Three of Tecumseh High School’s varsity wrestlers won titles at this year’s annual Lenawee County All-Star Wrestling Tournament at Adrian College on Saturday, Jan. 26.The Indians advanced six wrestlers to the championship finals. Tecumseh junior Preston Pelham won the 215-pound title after scoring a takedown and near fall on Sand Creek’s Garrett Miller for a 5-0 decision.Tecumseh senior Cole Amstutz recently recorded his 100th career victory for the Indians and was also one of the county champions.

The Fieldstone opens at Tecumseh Place as new residents begin moving in

An expansion to Tecumseh Place, one of the city’s assisted living facilities known as “The Fieldstone,” began welcoming new residents on Monday, Jan. 28. Ginny Ingle, one of the company’s owners, was on hand to oversee the move-in of The Fieldstone’s first occupants, which included Lottie Martin and Ruth Crosby. Furnishings were being unloaded out of a Martin’s Home Center truck that had been loaned for the move.“Some of our Tecumseh Place I residents are moving over here,” said Ingle.
