Goals and strategies helps guide Tecumseh schools' superintendent

When Dr. Kelly Coffin interviewed for the position of Superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools (TPS) last February, she pointed out how she believed communication was key. She said she would bring “vision and leadership experience,” and proposed a 90-day entry plan that identified focus areas she planned to begin working on. “I like to have a plan and have an idea of what needs to be accomplished and lay it out in small chunks,” Coffin said. “Also, at that time I wanted the board to see how I approach things.

Tecumseh Service Club kicks off 'Adopt-A-Family' program

The Tecumseh Service Club’s “Adopt-A-Family” program is underway, following a sign-up that took place on Nov. 2. Over 90 families signed up for assistance, and Colleen Sunderland, corresponding secretary and Christmas coordinator said more families would likely be referred to them yet this season.“There are more than 300 children in the families that signed up,” Sunderland said.As in previous years, those who adopt families will be given ages, sizes and interests for children and those adopting are to provide at least one outfit, pajamas, socks, underwear and at least one toy.

State approves $220,000 grant for cleanup

The last Tecumseh City Council meeting before the election — and council person Pat Housekeeper’s final one — lasted only a few minutes on Monday evening, Nov. 4. The only action was to pay the city’s bills.In the city manager’s report, Kevin Welch noted that the city recently received notification that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has approved a site reclamation grant in the amount of $220,000 to fund clean-up activities for the proposed Salsaria’s Restaurant site, where the Ivy Gallery presently conducts business.

Joan Rae Mantel

Joan Rae Mantel, 80, of Tecumseh, passed away on November 6, 2013, at Tecumseh Place under the loving care of Hospice of Lenawee and with her family at her side. She was born on March 4, 1933, in Hudson, the daughter of LaRue “Scottie” and Leah (Holcomb) Hart. Joan married Duane Bihlmeyer in 1951 and she later married Edward Mantel on May 27, 1994, and he survives.Joan was a member of the Clinton United Church of Christ for many years. She worked for several area companies, before settling down with her family, including Wacker Silicone, and Fitzpatrick and Goedert Real Estate Companies.

Mary Lee Barnhart

Mary Lee Barnhart, age 72, of Ypsilanti, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Nov. 6, 2013, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born June 9, 1941, in Tecumseh, the daughter of Lawrence and Harriet (Crampton) Packard. She was a graduate of Tecumseh High School and Siena Heights College. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister that will be dearly missed.

Anthony Henry Ivan

Anthony Henry Ivan, age 87, of Tecumseh passed away Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Toledo Hospital. He was born October 21, 1926, in Flat Rock to Anthony and Jenofe (Tomacek) Ivan. On May 1, 1990, in Las Vegas he married Carol Hunt, and she survives. Tony proudly served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy. He had been employed at Holy Cross Children’s Services, Boysville Campus as a carpenter. Tony was a member of the Tecumseh V.F.W. the Tecumseh American Legion and also the Adrian Moose.

Richard T. "Dick" Marzolf

“Dick” Marzolf died on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at Lynwood Manor in Adrian. He was born February 9, 1930, in Alma, Mich., to Orley T. and Beulah (Goodwin) Marzolf. Dick and Dorothy Louise Hall were married on October 3, 1948, and they recently celebrated 65 years together. It was love at first sight and it never ended. He and Dorothy had three children: daughters Kristine Sue Grinn of Valley Center, Calif., and Lisa Ann Schwind of Clinton, Mich.; and one grandson, Jeffrey Daniel Kienbaum of Midland, Mich. A son, Daniel Steven, preceeded Dick in death in 1969 at age 16.

Cora L. Gleason

Cora L. Gleason, age 92, of Clinton, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at ProMedica Herrick Hospital. She was born on October 5, 1921, in Bitely, Mich., the daughter of Ernest and Mabel (David) Gleason.Cora had worked as a Certified Registered Nurse in the Port Huron area for many years until moving to the Clinton area in 1986. She was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church for many years.

Romano brings Indians home for playoffs

Constant defensive pressure from Tecumseh’s varsity football team wore out a frustrated Mason squad on Friday, Nov. 1, as the visiting Indians secured a 27-7 Division 3, playoff victory and earned the right to bring at least one more game home to their faithful fans.After the game Romano spoke to the players and fans on the football field and thanked them for all of their support this year.“We’re going home,” he added.

Britton farmer's ailment leads to special harvest

Russ Cadmus wasn’t expecting a blood clot in his arm to interrupt his corn harvest this year, and it was even more unexpected when his friends and neighbors came together on Sunday, Oct. 20, to harvest the corn for him.“I had 28 acres of corn and they harvested it in two and a half hours,” said Cadmus. “We had about eight or nine people who came. It was remarkable.”Ron Roehm, manager of the John Marion, Inc. grain elevator on Britton Highway, organized the assistance.

BD’s boys, girls CC teams run at state for the first time in school history

Just last year Britton Deerfield (BD) was unable to put together a complete varsity boys cross country team. This year the Patriots not only created a scoring team, they advanced one all the way to the state meet with the girls squad for the first time in school history.“This was a great day for Britton Deerfield,” said BD coach Jay Yockey. “We were just happy to be here competing with the best athletes in the state.

Exchange program brings Japanese visitors to Tecumseh schools

A delegation of students and their teachers from Moriyama, Japan, visited classrooms at Tecumseh Public Schools on Friday, Nov. 1. The program is coordinated by Cindy Kojima at the Lenawee Intermediate School District, and a delegation of Lenawee County youths will visit Moriyama in the spring.The Lenawee-Moriyama, Japan Middle School Exchange Program aims to improve understanding between Japan and Lenawee County through active experiences and direct contact with a peer of another culture. During the short-term exchange, County students are chosen to host students from Moriyama.

Electors support incumbents, Philo in Tecumseh City Council election

Vicki Philo was elected on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to fill a vacant Tecumseh City Council seat, garnering the third highest number of votes with a tally of 398. The seat was open after long-time council member Pat Housekeeper opted not to run for another term. Philo also serves as Executive Director of the Tecumseh Area Chamber of Commerce.“I’m truly honored that the citizens of Tecumseh put their faith in me and I intend to work hard and not let them down. I’m excited to get started,” said Philo following the election.Incumbents Gary Naugle and Laurence VanAlstine Jr.

Cadmus’ send thank you for help with fall harvest, gift of football

Affordable Care Act ‘is a long overdue step in the right direction’

To the Editor,The following response to Mr. Madison’s letter of 10.31.2013 is based on fifty-one years experience working as a practicing physician, medical administrator and medical school faculty member. Mr. Madison’s comments, like most opponents of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), fail to address the dismal state of the American health care system.Over 100 years ago Theodore Roosevelt campaigned on a Republican platform calling for healthcare for all Americans. Sixty-one years ago President Truman in his State of the Union address called for universal healthcare.

Edith Mae Bowen

Edith Mae Bowen, age 82, of Tecumseh, died Friday, Nov. 01, 2013 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor. She was born June 16, 1931 in Knott County, Ky., to Elzie and Mattie (Combs) Miller. On May 18, 1950 in Redfox, Ky., she married Claude Bowen and he survives. Edith was a member of the Clinton Baptist Church and active in the Ladies Aid Group, Vacation Bible School and taught Sunday school. She loved going fishing with Claude in Florida, where they wintered for the past 33 years in Kissimmee. Edith enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards and bingo.

Geraldine (Gerri) L. Cooke

Geraldine (Gerri) L. Cooke, age 79, of Tecumseh, passed away November 5, 2013.Geraldine was born July 12, 1934, in Belle Center, Ohio the daughter of Clayton and Mary (Perry) Freshcorn.
