City considering second year for radio campaign

Last year, the city of Tecumseh worked with area businesses and nonprofit organizations to fund a 2013 Pure Michigan radio marketing campaign. The campaign included a radio ad about Tecumseh narrated by comedian and TV star, Tim Allen.Pure Michigan! campaign committee members are in the process of determining whether the city will partner again for a second round next year.“We’re just in the process of contacting our local partners to see if we can obtain funding again,” said Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch, who said so far, the response has been good.

New board to oversee use, upkeep of Scout Cabin

A new board currently consisting of five members has formed to oversee the Scout Cabin in Tecumseh’s Elliott Park.“We’d like to see a few more members involved,” said Mary Morgan, who has spearheaded an effort, along with her husband, Cameron, to get the cabin reopened and put to use by the community. The building was shut down for at least a year, but the group was able to turn the power back on in May when a scouting family stepped up to pay the past-due bill.

James William Kershner

James William Kershner, age 85, of Adrian went home to our Lord on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 surrounded by his loving family, caregiver, and under the gentle care of Hospice of Lenawee. He is free from the pain and confinement of a stroke suffered eight years ago.James was born December 22, 1927 in Kansas, the son of William Wesley and Elodia (Cuadra) Kershner. While attending Clinton High School he met his love, Marie Frolich whom he wed in 1948. They shared 45 years together before Marie died in 1993. He then met Elizabeth Calvin, they wed in 1994.

Tecumseh picks up first win of season

Indian girls jumped and screamed with excitement at Tecumseh’s Community Pool on Thursday, Sept. 26, after recording their first varsity swim and dive meet win of the season, beating visiting Lincoln 96-87.The meet lasted only an hour and 15 minutes with both teams small enough to need only one heat per event. Many of the Tecumseh swimmers were in unfamiliar water despite being in their home pool.“This was one of the meets we thought we could win,” explained Tecumseh head swim coach Sarah Eubanks. “We switched the lineup up a little bit and they swam some different things.

Indians have three named to All-Tournament Team

Tecumseh’s varsity girls golf team placed second in the Southeastern Conference White Division after tournament play Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Monroe Country Club.Carley LaPlant carded 85 as the Indians frontrunner and helped Tecumseh total 412 points in the event. LaPlant placed second in the White Division tournament behind Adrian freshman Ashley Rincon, who carded 82. Rincon was also named to the All-Tournament Team, which included both the Red and White divisions.

New cart at Busch's aids families with special needs children

Parents of special needs children often spend a good deal of their time looking for alternate ways to do things that may seem simple for other families. For Ashley Stegg, who is a customer service representative at The Hamblin Company in Tecumseh, even going to the grocery store could be a challenge as she and her husband, Dan, look after their daughter Sophie, who is two years old. “Sophie has Mowat-Wilson Syndrome, and she can't really sit up by herself in a regular grocery cart,” said Ashley.

Accidents at football games lead to safety reminders

Albert Flores, Building and Grounds Monitor for Tecumseh School District, has been directing traffic at Tecumseh home football games for as long as he can remember without an incident, until Friday, Sept. 20. While directing traffic after the game, Albert got hit once, then twice, and was down but not out.“He just didn’t see me,” Flores said of the Tecumseh resident driving the car that knocked him down. “It just happened so fast.”Traffic was unusually heavy, as was the rain. Flores sustained injury to his knee, but did not lose consciousness.

Salon to host Spa-A-Thon benefit

Bad Hair Day? Salon/Spa will be hosting its 6th annual Spa-A-Thon on Sunday, Oct. 6, from noon until 5 p.m. which will include activities in the northwest parking lot behind the salon, which is located at 109 W. Chicago Blvd., Tecumseh.This year, proceeds from the event will be donated to a local family that has been facing several struggles.The Kasiks’ daughter, Lora, who works at Basil Boys, has been battling Leiomyosarcoma cancer. The mother, Adrienne, battles the effects of Lyme disease, which has put her on the sidelines from volunteering time with the Tecumseh Public Schools.

Thanks community for making Tecumseh Music Fest a success

To the Editor,Community Arts of Tecumseh would like to thank everyone who was involved in making our first ever Tecumseh Music Fest such a successful event. Hats off to all of our volunteers, to those in attendance and everyone who purchased auction items. The event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local individuals and businesses. We offered over 100 items for bid in our auctions. A huge thank you, too, goes out to everyone who donated.

Season concludes for Music in the Park concert series

To the Editor,Another great Music in the Park summer concert series has come to a close in Tecumseh. Adams Park was filled with people on the third Thursday evening of June, July, August, and September.Folks brought lawn chairs, picnic baskets as they joined friends, family and neighbors for an evening of great music. I would like to thank United Bank and Trust for sponsoring the Music in the Park concert series. Because of their financial sponsorship, we are able to hire the musicians and offer free concerts for everyone to enjoy.

Fan Club thanks supporters for ‘Night Under the Lights’

To the Editor,The Tecumseh Indian Fan Club held their third annual Tecumseh Indian’s “Night Under the Lights” youth football clinic on Monday, Sept. 23. The Fan Club would like to give a special thanks to Brownies House of Pizza and Cheryl and Craig Brown for their generous donation of pizzas. Area businesses support CISTA’s hygiene education program

To the Editor,Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA) provides programs that support specific needs of students within Tecumseh Public Schools.In September, Tecumseh Acres third and fourth grade students heard about physical and oral hygiene practices: proper hand washing, oral hygiene, and the importance of regular bathing and wearing clean clothes. Indians beat Ypsilanti 14-0 during homecoming

Tecumseh High School’s varsity football team defeated visiting Ypsilanti 14-0 during homecoming on Friday, Sept. 27. The defensive contest remained scoreless throughout the first two quarters. The Indians’ offense scored a touchdown with Nick Cowen passing to Patrick Beguhn and scored again midway through the final quarter with Mitchell Meger hitting the end zone. Tecumseh’s Ben Vannatter connected on both point after touchdown kicks for the final score.The Indians improved their season record to 3-2 overall with the victory. TPS adds AD duties to assistant middle school principal position

By unanimous decision, Tecumseh Public School Board approved adding the duties of Athletic Director to the Tecumseh Middle School Assistant Principal position of Greg Lewis on Monday.Normally, the board does not approve the filling of the position, according to board president Ed Tritt.“This is kind of a different situation because it is a shared position and it makes a little bit of a difference,” he said.In speaking to the board, Supt.

Indians even season football record with 14-13 loss to Lincoln

Lining up just outside of the end zone with just 14 seconds remaining in its Friday, Sept. 20, varsity football game Tecumseh’s varsity football team was stopped cold by visiting Lincoln on the one yard line and the Indians lost 14-13. The Indians attempted to get off one more play as senior quarterback Nick Cowen spiked the football to stop the clock, however the referee called the game complete saying the final second had already ticked off.

Plan gives Tecumseh Public Schools 'focus' and a 'clear direction' - top goals announced

Tecumseh Public Schools Supt. Kelly Coffin unveiled 10 goal statements for 2013-14 as part of the district’s new strategic plan, which was approved Monday night, Sept. 23. Dr. Emmett Lippe facilitated sessions in August involving school personnel, business leaders and other members of the community.“When you talk about strategic planning, people question ‘why are you doing this?’” said Coffin. “It really offers our organization focus and a clear direction.

Tecumseh homecoming is Friday

Tecumseh High School’s 2013 Homecoming Court was recently announced. Tecumseh Homecoming is Friday, Sept. 27, when the Indians take on the Ypsilanti Community Grizzlies.
