Morale high as township departments merge

It’s been three months since the Raisin Township trustees voted to bring its Fire and Police Departments together under one Department of Public Safety (DPS) umbrella as part of a cost reduction plan for the township. Raisin Township operated for several years with a separate Fire Department and Police Department.

CISTA kick-starts summer for students

Communities In Schools of the Tecumseh Area (CISTA) is kicking off a busy summer with T-Town Safety Monday, June 24. CISTA executive director Heather Masten said that the course, which teaches students five years old through second grade about a wide range of safety issues, is already fully enrolled, but parents who would like to check for last minute openings may call the office at 423.7574. There is a fee for all programs.Masten said that she is grateful for the community’s participation in CISTA’s classes and programs.

Indian Crossing Trails Park should be off limits to mountain biking

Consideration is being given to a proposal that would allow the sport of mountain biking in a portion of Indian Crossing Trails Park located near the Standish Dam off Burt Street.The park currently has posted signs prohibiting biking at both entrances to the trails — one at Standish Dam and the other at the Globe Mill Dam near the Community Center.We understand the lure of the park to enthusiasts of mountain biking.

Outdoor drama tells story of Tecumseh on 200th year of his death

To the Editor,Today’s Columbus Dispatch included (an advertisement) for the new season of Tecumseh! Over the years we have brought similar ads or information about this amazing spectacle to your office and/or the Chamber of Commerce.We have several times (at least 10) viewed the pageant with guests from Tecumseh, Mich., or have groups in tow. It is truly amazing.

Thanks VFW for donation of American flag to district library

To the Editor,It is with sincere appreciation that I write this letter to thank Nick Hebert, Commander and the other members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4187 of Tecumseh.Commander Hebert stopped by the library last week and donated a beautiful new flag. He told me he noticed that our flag was becoming frayed, so thought he would replace it. The generosity of this gesture cannot be overstated.We are all so lucky to live and work in a place where people support each other.

Wanda M. Crane

Wanda M. Crane, age 94, of Tecumseh, died June 17, 2013 at Cambrian Assisted Living, in Tecumseh, where she had been a resident for five years.She was born August 31, 1918 in Deerfield, the daughter of William and Alvina (Schurg) Weasel.In 1936 she graduated from Deerfield High School. On August 28, 1937 she married Fay Edwin Crane in Angola, Indiana.He died on September 25, 1998.Wanda was a resident of Tecumseh for most of her life. She worked at Ford Motor Company in Rawsonville, retiring after 25 years.She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh.

Tecumseh wins Division II state championship

Winning a state title and making it look easy has teams across Michigan talking about Tecumseh High School’s varsity softball program being as solid as they come after the Indians picked up their third Division II championship on Saturday, June 15, in Battle Creek in dominating fashion.The weather looked threatening early in the game but it had nothing on the Indians as they secured a 5-1 victory against Saginaw Swan Valley for the title.

Biffle takes checkered flag in Michigan, gives Ford Motor Co. 1,000th victory

Back-to-back NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories by Greg Biffle was a pretty good reason for his crew to party in victory lane after taking the checkered flag at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in the Quicken Loans 400 on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16.

Tecumseh's varsity softball team wins Division 2 State championship

Tecumseh's varsity softball team picked up a Division 2 state championship in Battle Creek on Saturday, June 15, with a 5-1 victory against Saginaw Swan Valley.Tecumseh pitcher Emily Maves turned in a dominating performance, recording nine strikeouts in the title game.It is the Indians' (33-5-3) third state softball title, also bringing home trophies in 2007 and 2008.See complete results in the Herald's Thursday print edition.

NewSong team delivers community donations to Moore, Oklahoma

After a tornado devastated the community of Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20, Pastor Tom Hawkins, of NewSong Community Church, knew that he wanted to do something, so he put the matter to prayer. Soon, one of the church leaders broached the subject of a relief mission to the area.“So we put the word out on Facebook and in the newspaper and so many people stepped up with supplies,” said Hawkins. At the same time, the church received a call from a donor who wished to remain anonymous.“They said they would pay for a 20-foot U-Haul if we would drive it down there,” Hawkins said.

Raisin Township taking road surveys

The Charter Township of Raisin is seeking public input in order to make a more informed decision about future maintenance and repair of township roads. A 20-question survey was launched Wednesday, June 12, online and is accessible by visiting www.raisintownship.com.“Our new website is still under construction, but there is a link there to take the survey,” said Jay Cavanaugh, Raisin Township Supervisor.

LISD Center for a Sustainable Future dedicated on Tipton Highway

Lenawee Intermediate School District’s (LISD) new Center for a Sustainable Future campus on Tipton Highway was dedicated with a program, ribbon cutting and open house, complete with tours of the Net Zero energy classroom and laboratory structure, on Monday, June 10. Instead of a ribbon, a garland of greenery was cut.

History brought to life during tours of Brookside Cemetery

A group of Tecumseh Volunteers, led by historian Bob Elliott, revived a prior tradition by holding the 2013 Brookside Cemetery Tour on Saturday, June 8 at 5 and 7 p.m. Group members reenacted the stories of several individuals whose monuments are located in Brookside, including the story of a Civil War nurse and several military members.Event proceeds will go toward restoration of a Civil War monument that sits in the front of the cemetery.

Retiring Tecumseh superintendent reflects on 47 years of service

Supt. Mike McAran has been the chief administrator in Tecumseh Public Schools for eight years, so long that many people may have forgotten his long service to the school district before assuming the top post.He began in the system in 1976 when Tecumseh High School (THS) principal Clarence Lacny hired him as assistant principal. Soon after beginning at THS, he added athletic director to his assistant principal duties when Don Brazee retired from that post.
