Raisin Township plan gives historic Sutton School a new ‘lease’ on life

By DEB WUETHRICHRaisin Township Police Chief Scott Lambka received a green light at Monday night’s Board of Trustees meeting to obtain signatures on a lease agreement between the township and Lenawee Intermediate School District. Terms of the lease include allowing the Raisin Township Police Department to relocate at the old Sutton School building at 2996 Sutton Road.

City receives offer of $2 million gift for new Tecumseh Community Center

By DEB WUETHRICHDavid Hickman, Lenawee Community Foundation Board Chair, announced on Wednesday, Jan. 11, that Tecumseh will soon be getting a new community center, thanks to a $2 million pledge by the Foundation. Hickman was joined for the announcement by Mayor Richard Johnson, Tecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch, Director of Cultural and Leisure Services, Shelley Lim, Larry Ash, Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Board and other city staff.The fund being used to support this project was originally created through the generosity of the Ruth V. and Ruth Anne Thompson Trusts.

Tecumseh School Board examine state-imposed term extensions for board members

By DEANE ERTSTecumseh School Board members will be spending a little more time in office than they had bargained for, according to a change in the state election law. The board has had the issue under review in previous meetings and at Monday night’s meeting Supt. Mike McAran briefed the trustees on a recent board policy committee meeting addressing the subject.Currently board terms are four years, but to comply with a recent state legislative mandate (House Bill No. 4005), all public school board members are required by statute to extend their terms by six, 12, or 18 months.

Tribe third at Hudson Super 16

Tecumseh’s varsity wrestling team defeated Chelsea 58-18 on Wednesday, Jan 11, and scored a forfeit win over Ann Arbor Huron, improving to 17-2, 6-0 in the SEC. Joe Rebotarro made the Division 2 Rankings for the Indians. He currently listed as No. 10 at 285 pounds, joining teammates Chase Lewis (No. 2, 112-pounds), Ronnie Bechtol (No. 8, 140-pounds), and Cole Amstutz (No. 8, 171-pounds).The Indians attended Hudson’s Super 16 Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 15, and finished third with 134.5 points. The hosting Tigers won the tournament with a team score of 197.5.

Patriots drop TCC contest at Madison

A slow start at Madison had Britton Deerfield’s varsity girls basketball team playing catch-up all night against the Trojans. The Patriots wound up losing the Tri-county Conference contest 49-30.The Patriots were behind by 12 points at the end of the first quarter and never recovered. The Trojans finished the first half with a 26-12 lead. Craig Tanis said his BD girls had balanced scoring in the second and third quarters but never pulled closer than nine points of the lead.

CHARLES R. LEWIS

Charles R. Lewis, age 88, of Tecumseh, passed away the evening of January 16, 2012 at Lenawee Medical Care Facility with loving family at his side. Charles was the son of Roy and Lileth (Hall) Lewis born February 3, 1923 in Seneca, Michigan. He graduated from Blissfield High School in 1940 and attended Purdue University while serving in the military.Charles served as a combat infantryman in both France and Germany in the 102nd Infantry Division during WWII.

Clinton girls improve to 6-3 overall

Friday the 13th was an unlucky day for Whitmore Lake with the Trojans falling 57-26 against a tough Redskin varsity girls basketball squad.Leading Clinton’s offense was senior guard Haley Mercy with 13 points, four steals and three assists while Gretchen McNitt added 12 points, four assists and four rebounds. Emily Wilson added 11 points for Clinton.The Redskins followed with a 50-36 loss on Monday at Blissfield. The Royals pulled away in the second half after leading by two points at the end of the first quarter. Mercy led the Redskins (6-3) with 10 points.

Petitions begin for residents on pond

Putback by Galloway gives Indians first win

By MICKEY ALVARADOHannah Galloway has gone up for offensive rebounds over and over again during practice with Tecumseh’s varsity girls basketball team so when it came time to do it against Adrian with just 2.8 seconds on the clock it just came naturally.Her offensive putback won the game for the Indians, beating Adrian 28-27 for Tecumseh’s first season victory, but without her teammates carrying the same never give up attitude, they wouldn’t even have come close.“Our girls deserved that win,” said Tecumseh coach Jamie Mossburg.

Maples flog Comstock’s Indians, win by 32 points

What no one expected was how bad the Maples would attack and flog their former leader and his new band of Indians.Adrian beat Tecumseh by a whopping 32 points, winning the Southeastern Conference (SEC) contest 59-27.“You know, it’s a rivalry game so you’ve got to win that one,” said Adrian’s new coach Bart Bartels.

Tecumseh just shy of regional team qualifying in victory against Jackson

By MICKEY ALVARADOEvery round was won by Tecumseh Indians varsity gymnastics’ team as it picked up a 115.70-93.95, dual win against visiting Jackson on Monday, Jan. 23, during its TGA (Tecumseh Gymnastics Academy) appreciation night.Sophomore Sarah Kelly led the Indians to the win with a first place finish in the all-around with 30.175 points. Tecumseh junior Jillian Travis placed third in the all-around with 27 points while junior teammate Anna Wendt placed second with 28.675 points. Kelly and Travis tied for first place on vault to open the meet with scores of 8.150 each.

Suspect in Saline robbery a ‘very good suspect’ in two recent Tecumseh robberies

The suspect is a 27-year-old Caseville, Mich., man who was nabbed in Saline after robbing Domino’s Pizza on Michigan Ave. Monday afternoon, according to press reports.“He is a very good suspect,” said Tecumseh Police Chief Troy Stern, who cautioned that evidence is still being evaluated. The department is continuing its investigation and encourages anyone with information to call 423.7494.The Caseville man held up the Saline business Monday at 3:30 p.m.

Crime Stoppers seek help in identifying suspect of two armed robberies in Tecumseh

Crime Stoppers of Lenawee is asking for the public’s help with information about two armed robberies that occurred in the City of Tecumseh. The first incident occurred on Jan. 19 around 9 p.m. at the Fabricare Laundromat located at 115 Herrick Park Dr., and the second incident occurred on Saturday, Jan. 21, shortly after 5 p.m. at Modish Hair Salon, 208 E. Chicago Blvd. In both incidents a lone white male entered the businesses and brandished a knife demanding money from the employees.

Tecumseh mayor attends State of State Address by Governor Rick Snyder, who says Michigan ‘moving in the right direction’

Johnson was the guest of Michigan Rep. Nancy Jenkins for the occasion.“It was really an honor to be asked to be up there for this, and I really appreciated it,” said Johnson.

JAMES "JAY" H. WHEELER

James “Jay” H. Wheeler, 82, of Tecumseh, passed away January 17, 2012, at Herrick Memorial Hospital. Born March 18, 1929, in Monroe, Michigan, James was the only child of John and Sally (Widner) Wheeler.On January 22, 1949, James married Barbara Ruhl in Monroe. Barbara, his wife of almost 63 years, survives. Jay and Barbara enjoyed many activities together including snowmobiling, camping, boating and fishing, and playing golf. He was a member of the Tecumseh Country Club where he once had a hole in one. Jay was also a faithful member of the Tecumseh United Methodist Church.

Second robbery hits downtown

The Tecumseh Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that occurred on Saturday, Jan. 21, shortly after 5 p.m. at Modish Hair Salon located at 208 E. Chicago Blvd. in downtown Tecumseh.The suspect is a lone male, who entered the business brandishing a knife and demanding money from employees at the business. The suspect, who was described as a 5’10” white male, age 30-40, thin build, with facial hair, and possibly a goatee, took an undisclosed amount of cash. He was wearing a dark stocking cap, dark colored jacket over a grey hooded sweatshirt, and blue jeans.

Fabricare robbed at knifepoint

The Tecumseh Police Department is currently investigating an armed robbery, which occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Fabricare Laundromat, located at 115 Herrick Park Dr. in the City of Tecumseh.A lone male armed with a knife entered the business and confronted an employee who was working the cash register. The subject demanded the money from the register and threatened the employee with the knife.An undisclosed amount of cash was obtained by the male who then fled the building and ran east across the parking lot towards Maumee St.

City water/sewer rates, community center are topics at study session

By DEB WUETHRICHTecumseh City Manager Kevin Welch reviewed data for the city’s water and sewer rates during a study session prior to Monday night’s Tecumseh City Council meeting. Welch reported that the sewer fund is close to breaking even and noted that he would not see a reason to change rates at this point in time. The study does project a two percent increase assumption in 2013 and in future years.“Our water fund from a normal operation standpoint more than broke even, however, we did have some capital expense costs of $40,000 more that we took in for the year,” said Welch.

Citizens group starts campaign to save pool

By DEANE ERTSThe vote to approve .25 mill for the support of Tecumseh Community Memorial Pool will be Tuesday, Feb. 28, and the citizens’ group that is hoping to persuade voters to allow the levy on taxable property in the Tecumseh Public School District is meeting regularly to plan strategies to educate the public on the value of the facility to every resident.The group, known as Friends of the Tecumseh Community Memorial Pool (FTCMP), is planning an informational public forum and open swim at the pool, which is located at the north end of the Tecumseh Middle School, 307 N.
