While Tecumseh’s Parks and Recreation Department has added several options to help beat the winter blues, Director Shelley Lim and her crew have already begun preparing for the additional hours of sunshine hopefully heading our way this spring.

Each of the winter activities incorporate a Healthy Living motif and the Second Annual Tecumseh Community Weight Loss Challenge is at the top of the charts as a way to get into better shape during the New Year.

The challenge, sponsored by the Fitness Connection, is set to begin on Jan. 17. The deadline to register for the event is Friday, Jan. 7.

Last year’s big weight losers were Aaron and Michele Phillips who combined to lose approximately 150 pounds.

Snowshoe rentals are available at the Parks and Recreation department for the first time and as soon as at least three inches of the white powder sticks to the ground Lim hopes outdoor enthusiasts will take advantage of the new and exciting opportunity. Snowshoes and poles are being offered for only $5 a day or $10 for the weekend with a $50 deposit. Shoes are available for men, women and children free of charge through the month of January.

Also new to programming is a Bird Count Walk led by Gregg Perez at Indian Crossing Trails Park, which coincides with the Great Backyard Bird Count from Feb. 18-21.

The Great Backyard Bird Count asks participants to plan on counting birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count. Participants in Tecumseh’s walk may turn in a count for that area as well as one for their own back yard. During last year’s four-day event in February, more than 97,200 bird checklists were submitted by an estimated 63,000 volunteer bird watchers from across the United States and Canada.
