Chloe Visits the Tecumseh Herald

I haven't blogged in a while, but this will be my last blog. I already announced in print my departure from the Herald. As one of my last features, which will appear in the Monday, April 25, edition, I interviewed Janette and Bud Slusher about their dog, Chloe, an Alaskan Malamute, who was featured in a children's book. This is some video footage showing just how adorable Chloe is.

An afternoon skate and chocolate in Tecumseh

It is winter. For most of my adult life, I have dreaded winter. However, that wasn’t always the case. As a child, I lived for winters, for when I could lace up my skates and spend hours at the ice rink or strap on some skis and shush down the sad little excuses we have for ski hills here in southeast Michigan. If I was lucky, we spent a weekend or two skiing in Canada after one of my brother Paul's hockey tournaments. That, too, was part of the fun, hockey season and going all over Michigan and Canada to watch my brother play.

Somewhere along the way, my life took some wild and crazy turns. I grew to despise the dreary winter months. This year, I decided to look at things a little differently. Mostly, I decided to get active and stay active throughout the winter.

For a long time, I've been telling my cohorts here at the Herald that I once had aspirations of being another Dorothy Hamill and that I still had a pretty nice pair of skates that I could use to skate on my lunch hours at the various manmade outdoor rinks the City of Tecumseh has built over the years. I just never got around to dusting the skates off and getting them sharpened. This year, however, I decided to pull the skates out of my closet.

I finally brought my skates to work and at lunchtime headed over to Adams Park where a nice little rink has been set up for anyone to skate on. I'm a bit wobbly on the skates anymore, but being outside, even in the cold, was exhilarating. It doesn't feel as cold when you are skating. Well, I no longer aspire to be Dorothy Hamill but being on the ice made for a great lunchtime workout and being on the move outside makes winter feel a little less harsh. I’m sure you’ll find me skating during lunch a few more times before the rink melts away.

Just taking stock of all that happened in 2010

With two days left of 2010, I suppose it’s time to take a look back at what the year held. Well, the year started with January as it always does and then came February and then March…oh, I guess it was more exciting than that. There was snow and then there was sun and then there was hot sun and then there was snow again. Okay, okay, that’s not that exciting either.
Really, this year was filled with things that didn’t happen the previous year. Right? Oh, I guess I should list those things. Here I go, in no particular order and all in one breath:

I'm stuffed

I had my quiet Thanksgiving with my Dear Partner J. We decided to just stay home together and cook. Cooking together is as much as date as anything for us. J, of course, organizes everything. I just don the apron and help where help is needed, unless the parents are around. Then there are just too many cooks in the kitchen. We have a galley kitchen, so two people moving about in the kitchen at a time is about max for us.
While I have garnered a reputation for burning things like rice and pizza, when it’s just J and I and my sole focus is the food I can hold my own. I somehow manage to make some great things. Last time we had a quiet, just the two of us, Thanksgiving I made some pretty delightful crème fraiche biscuits and a delicious pumpkin pie. This time, I made a ginger cranberry chutney and chopped the sweet potatoes and Brussel sprouts for some of the other fixings.
I guess I consider myself a fair-weather cook, like fair-weather sports fans. I enjoy the act of cooking when I’m not trying to stuff it between a full day of work and carting a kid to some kind of activity. I do that kind of cooking, too, but that’s when I lose focus and am apt to burn things.
Nothing was burned on Thanksgiving, except the marshmallows on the sweet potatoes, but that was on purpose with a crème brulee torch. Yes, we have one of those just lying around in our kitchen. I thought I’d share a photo of our meal. I was truly fantastic and fun. I suppose I should insist on just such a date night at least once a month.

Saying Happy Thanksgiving a few days early

Soon we’ll all be gathering with our respective families and feasting on Turkey and all of the fixings. I don’t know if I’ll get any turkey this year. My Dear Partner J and I are on our own for this holiday, which is fine. J, who does most of the cooking in my house because I frighten people when I cook, is planning to go “no turkey” this time. I’m not sure what his food plans are, actually. He was planning some kind of Asian fare. There’s some talk that we’ll have company. If not, that’s okay, too. Mostly, I’m thankful for the quiet weekend I’m going to have. I’m thankful for many other things, too. Really, that’s kind of what I was trying to get to in a round-about way. There are many things I’m thankful for. I’m thankful for my kids and J and for our modest home and our garden we have in summer. I’m thankful for the time I got to spend with my parents this summer, too, and I’m thankful my mom left my freezer full of some of her specialty foods that I like. I know she really left them for my son, the apple of her eye, but we all get to have the goodies. I’m always thankful for my health and now for learning how to stay healthy through diet and exercise. I’m thankful for many, many things, including the many people who actually take a few minutes to read the things I write here and in the Herald. Thank you and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Halloween 2010 in Britton

Among the many festive things me and my kids did this weekend was to go trick-or-treating in Britton. I think a lot of people had the idea, seeing as how Britton chose to celebrate Saturday. For us, it was an opportunity for my kids to meet up with some of their friends. They recently changed schools in order for the kids to be in school a bit closer to home.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening of reconnecting with friends and walking through the village. I took some video footage of the evening. If I sound a little too excited about Halloween in Britton, my apologies. We had a great time.
