A two-point, 19-17, first half lead, held by Tecumseh’s varsity boys basketball team, vanished in the blink of an eye on Friday, Jan 22, as Adrian’s Maples struck from the three-point line in the second half to secure a 53-42 Southeastern Conference (SEC) victory.

Adrian’s Matt Cumbow hit a quick three-pointer from the left side of the court to start the second half and then tagged another from the other side of the court to snatch the lead from the Indians. The Maples turned the game around by tagging five three-pointers and outscored the Indians 21-10 in the third quarter.

Adrian held the lead for the remainder of the game.

“Good shooting by them, and we’ve got to close out better defensively,” said Tecumseh head coach Jamie Mossburg of how the Indians let the game slip away. “They were on fire in the third quarter. That really was the separation point.”

Unforced turnovers were also costly for Tecumseh. Mossburg called a timeout after Adrian’s two three-pointers but right after returning to the court a traveling call gave the ball back to the Maples and they cashed in with a layup by Mitchell Dempsey that put them up 25-19.

“I don’t think they changed anything,” Mossburg said of the halftime break. “We were still on our man to man at that point and they just hit some nice open shots.”

Cumbow led Adrian’s offense with 21 total points in the game, and the Maples had two others, Mitchell Dempsey and Dominique Marr, who had double-digit scoring.

Dylan Smith led the Indians’ offense with 16 points but the rest of the Indians’ players were limited to single digits with Jordan Patterson (6 rebounds) hitting nine points and Trey Mitchell seven.

Mitchell was noticeably frustrated in the third quarter. After being benched due to a foul he left the court but returned a short while later.

The Indians pulled to within three points (25-22) in the third quarter with Smith hitting a layup and a free-throw but the Maples went into the fourth quarter leading 38-29.

Mitchell kept the Indians within striking distance by hitting the first basket from the field in the fourth quarter to set the score at 38-31. However, Adrian’s Cumbow answered back with another three-pointer to help the Maples pull away.
Mitchell scored all seven of his points in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Maples. Adrian outscored Tecumseh 15-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the SEC win.

“We had some great defensive efforts... we just didn’t execute offensively well enough throughout the entire game,” Mossburg said. “It was a great Tecumseh-Adrian battle... It was a great high school basketball atmosphere on a Friday night.”

Tecumseh (3-7 overall and 0-5 SEC) hosts Monroe (3-7, 0-5 SEC) on Friday, at 7 p.m., and Onsted (10-0, 7-0 LCAA) on Saturday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
