AJ Smith Recreation Center to officially open Jan. 17

The new AJ Smith Recreation Center in Tecumseh, located at 810 N. Evans Street in John W. Smith Park, is scheduled to officially open on Thursday, Jan. 17 with an open house from 4 to 6 p.m.Opening festivities begin at 4 p.m. with tours and a Flag Dedication, ribbon cutting ceremony planned for 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served until 6 p.m.The Parks and Recreation staff moved from the old Tecumseh Community Center to the new facility over the holiday break and are currently open for business at the new location. The phone number for the Parks and Recreation Department, 423.5602, has remained the same.The $2.3 million, 20,000-square-foot, facility has two multi-use gymnasiums, designated Green and Blue, as well as rental space similar to the old “Glass Room” at the old Community Center. Each multi-purpose court will host various indoor activities.“The floors are gorgeous,” said Director of Cultural and Leisure Services Shelly Lim. “They are a multipurpose flooring and lined to accommodate a variety of sports.”
