Assessments should be based on property owner’s ability to pay

To the Editor,I would like to comment on the proposal by Raisin Township for a special assessment to fund road repair. First, I acknowledge the need for road repair. There is no doubt about it. And I commend the board for at least making an attempt of some sorts to address the need. But I see a real problem here. Does the board realize how this will hurt the low income, seniors, disabled and others who are on limited incomes? All right, I admit that I am one of them. A couple of hundred dollars may not seem much to some. But to those of us on a limited income, it means a lot. We can barely pay our taxes as it is. Many of us have to go to food banks just to make ends meet. Many of us have house repairs we cannot make because of the cost. Many of us have medical expenses that are very high. I believe that this assessment must take into consideration the landowner’s ability to pay.Dean FinneganTecumseh
