Attraction of vermin is main problem with backyard chickens

To the Editor,I live within the Tecumseh city limits and I am against city residents having backyard chickens. The main problem with backyard chickens is the vermin that the chickens and their feed would attract. This could range from animals as large as coyotes, foxes, raccoons and opossums to small rodents and unwanted insects. This may not bother the chicken owners, but it would have a negative effect on neighbors in close proximity.I am in favor of consuming locally grown and raised produce, livestock, etc. but there are other ways to attain that goal. A local food co-op (though start-up costs and efforts would be considerable) would be a great asset to the community. Currently, we can choose to purchase locally grown and produced food from stores in our area.I believe there are better alternatives to city chickens, so I’m voting no.Betsy YagielaTecumseh
