Barbara Lucas

On December 8, 2016, Barbara Thielan Lucas entered the presence of her Lord. Born October 3, 1921, Barbara was the youngest child of Merton (Pete) Thielan and Bernice Edwards Thielan. Raised in Tecumseh, she attended Eastern Michigan University. On January 12, 1942, she married the “love of her life” Maynard Lucas, of Wayne, Mich. They were blessed with five children and the family eventually moved to Atlanta, Georgia. While living in Atlanta, Barbara came to know the Savior she had been searching for all of her life, Jesus Christ. Overwhelmed by His love for her, she began a new journey of knowing and serving Him. Part of her new adventure included residing in a suburb of Dallas, Texas for 37 years until moving to New Jersey to be cared for by her precious daughter, Susan, until her death.

Barbara is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Maynard, and two sisters, Norma Seidel Preston and Ruth Hanna.

She is survived by her sons, Kent (Linda) Lucas of Lake Charles, La., Kirk (Carol) Lucas of Clinton, Mich.; daughters, Robin (Doug) Hodges of Celina, Texas, Susan (Brent) Haggerty, of Martinsville, N.J., and Marcia (David) Nagel of Hollidaysburg, Pa.; 16 grandchildren she loved deeply, and 17 great-grandchildren.

Barbara would want us all to know that “Death has been swallowed up in victory” because “He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!” I Corinthians 15:54-55.

Funeral service for Barbara will be Monday, Dec. 19, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.  Burial will follow the service at Brookside Cemetery.

If you wish to make a contribution in memory of Barbara, one of her favorite charities was International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, a non-profit organization located at 30 LaSalle Street, Ste. 4300, Chicago, Ill.
