It’s been approximately one year since Sam Benschoter made his decision that Michigan State University was where he wanted to be after graduating Tecumseh High School and on Wednesday, Nov. 11, he officially committed to play baseball with the Division I Spartans by penning his name to paper.

He said he made five or six visits to Michigan State University and also visited other colleges before making his final decision.
“I had my offer there and just felt comfortable at state,” he said.

The right-hander was county Pitcher of the Year and an all-region selection as well last season as a junior. Benschoter compiled a 5-1 record with a 0.69 ERA and a county-high 71 strikeouts.

He said he went to a Red Sox showcase in the fall and was throwing a fastball at 90 to 92 miles per hour. The fastball, curveball and changeup are his bread and butter pitches and he’s working on adding a slider this year.

The one thing that stands out to him as far as future goals is reducing the number of walks he gives up and he is working hard to improve that.

“I put on 10 to 15 pounds of muscle… and my arm feels real good,” Benschoter commented.

“He is a very good pitcher,” said Tecumseh varsity baseball coach Tom Bullinger. “He has a lot of experience, probably the most experience I’ve ever had a player have since I’ve been here.”

In addition to pitching for the Indians, Benschoter has started as shortstop since he was a sophomore and expects to do so again. As a freshman he was brought up to varsity and pitched three games.

Benschoter is not a loud boisterous player but leads by example, according to Bullinger.

“His shoulders are going to be sore this year because we’re going to be really riding them,” said Bullinger. “He’s a kid that if you go to a game I’d tell them to watch him because he does everything you want a kid to do. He hustles... he’s a perfect teammate.”

Benschoter holds a 3.8 grade point average and is undecided on a major but will either go into kinesiology or education.
