Bonnie H. McElroy

Bonnie H. McElroy, age 86, a Tecumseh resident since moving here from Monroe in 1968, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 21, 2013, with her family at her side. She was a resident of Cambrian Assisted Living and was under the gentle care of Hospice of Lenawee. She was born on August 7, 1926, in Festus, Mo., the daughter of Noah and Essie (Carr) Hefner. She married Richard A. MacGirr on July 27, 1946, and sadly, he died unexpectedly on October 9, 1949. She then married Kenneth C. McElroy on March 8, 1952, and he too, preceded her in death on September 5, 2001.Bonnie, along with being a homemaker, had worked at Community National Bank in Pontiac where she met her husband Ken. She was a charter member of the Covenant Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Tecumseh, former member of the First Presbyterian Churches in Tecumseh and Monroe and also their Woman’s Association. She was very active in her church and community, having been a Sunday school teacher at both Monroe and Tecumseh Presbyterian Churches, a member of the Herrick Hospital Auxiliary, was a Cub Scout den mother and had assisted with the Campfire Girls, and was affectionately known as “Billboard Bonnie,” having been on three of Cambrian’s billboard ads. Bonnie was involved with her children’s activities as they were growing up and enjoyed taking her grandkids on “special trips.” She enjoyed baking, cooking, entertaining family and friends over the years in her home, was a history buff and avid reader. Her greatest joy in life was the time she spent with her family and many friends.Survivors include her sons, Gordon (Kelley) McElroy of Mohnton, Pa. and William (Kathleen) McElroy of Waterford, Mich.; her daughters, Susan (Kenneth) Pieh and Mary (Gary) Furgason both of Tecumseh; her sister-in-law, Gail Hefner of Waterford, Mich.; her grandchildren, Nikki (Dan) Bono, Lindsay (Matt Morris) McElroy, Kyle McElroy, Jamie McElroy, Julie McElroy, Andrea (Jason) Hobbs, Anthony (Jenna) Pieh, Gabriel (Heather) Furgason, Bryan and (Brandi) Furgason; great grandchildren, Jack and Hannah Furgason, Kendrick and Everett Hobbs and Connor Bono. In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rex and Jimmy Hefner.Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will also be at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family would like to thank the support from Hospice of Lenawee, Cambrian Assisted Living, Herrick Manor and the families from the Presbyterian Churches and would like memorial contributions to be made in Bonnie’s honor to these communities.
